That's awesome! I would definitely go if I could.
Posted: Jun 6, 2008 12:28 pm

Why must life be so mean to me.
My wife's birthday is Halloween, and she couldn't give a shit about the Sonics.
I doubt there is anyway she will let me return home if I drive to Seattle for this.
Posted: Jun 6, 2008 12:48 pm

I got my tickets already!

Presale tix are available now! The password is WITCH

I'll see you there!
Posted: Jun 6, 2008 12:54 pm

I just saw what the ticket prices are. $26.50 - $62 (before fees)
BTW, ticketbastard is doing presales already with the code WITCH
The best seat it would give me was a floor seat row Z for $46.50 plus $13 in service fees!!

Anyone know if this is the only NW show they are doing? I'd rather see them at Bumbershoot, or even the EMP before having to pay this much for the stuffy Paramount.
Posted: Jun 6, 2008 1:18 pm

I just got tickets. this having a job thing is kinda nice.

I think it is hilarious that it's on Halloween. Dress up like Waldo or Austin powers and truck on down to the Paramount for the big costume contest. The worst dressed people in the house are bound to be the Sonics themselves.
Posted: Jun 6, 2008 5:49 pm

I'd come up to Seattle for this, but...reserved seating? How can people stay still in their seats? It ain't a folk concert.
Posted: Jun 6, 2008 9:21 pm

i'm there with wifey.

hopefully all the pertinent members live until october.

I'll be Skinny Minnie ... but I better start gettin' bulemic right away!

Slightly perplexed as to why they chose to have the floor seated when they often do general admission there. I suppose it's probably to keep people with walkers and canes from getting knocked over while reliving their youth.

the nite lite is killer! at least it was back in 1992...are the ladies with the blonde beehives still working it behind the bar?
Posted: Jun 26, 2008 10:33 am

No behive behind the bar a few months ago. Tig-bittied brunette serving them up was pretty cool, tho.

Is there a Bar Car?
Posted: Oct 6, 2008 4:28 pm

Is there a Bar Car?

Yup, it's super chill. Bout 4 hour ride but I suggest you back a flask or something the beers are pretty expensive but a coke is cheap and you can spike it and mellow in the bar car. I dunno if they still run 'em but the used to have 2 story trains going up to Seattle and the bottom floor was for families or large parties. If that's the case it's sick because if there's enough of us we can take over one of the private family rooms and party our faces off.
Posted: Oct 6, 2008 4:32 pm

They serve beer & wine in the 'cafe car'. someone told me recently that if you bring cans of bud you are safe, because that's what they serve on the train.
Posted: Oct 6, 2008 4:32 pm

uh...what Zach said
Posted: Oct 6, 2008 4:33 pm

...but I've taken the train to seattle several times and I've never been on a 2-story train.
Posted: Oct 6, 2008 4:51 pm

...BUT according to my coworker just now they do still run those observation cars on the weekends, but you have to get there early to lay your claim.
Posted: Oct 6, 2008 4:56 pm

we're on the 12:30... party train.

Totally down to skate up there if your down Matto. I might still know a dude with a mini in a garage. Also there's a house show the next night that should be fun. It's @ those dudes who played the last Rep Civ & Therapists show @ Twilight & Coolouts have a show later in the night (31st) I'm sure they'll be partying somewhere & I'm sure the Sonics will end early in the night. Fucking parties everywhere basically. We got a reservation @ The Moore. 80 bucks for me & Kyja.

This is going to fun!!

Anyone else from LA going to this??

I know a TON of Bay Area folks that are going...
Posted: Oct 10, 2008 2:23 pm

This is going to fun!!

Until the lounge-act bass player starts singing all the hits while Gerry Roslie "rests up" for Psycho at the end. Woohoo!
Posted: Oct 10, 2008 3:26 pm

When I saw them in NY, he only sang "Cinderella" and "Dirty Robber" (that I can remember)...

C'mon give Gerry a break - he's battled cancer, had heart problems, and who knows what other ailments!
Posted: Oct 10, 2008 4:28 pm

I figure this will either be totally great, or at it's worst at least I'll be drunk and partying, dancing and screaming my ass off with my friends and a whole bunch of people who like the Sonics as much as I do. I figure that makes it worth while no matter what.
Posted: Oct 13, 2008 11:33 am

add me to the list of portland people coming up for this....

I think $63 is the most I've ever spent on a single concert ticket. this better be good!
Posted: Oct 13, 2008 1:14 pm

Petey, you & Howie can't leave early - we're staying the Sat nite too!

done. extended hotel - changed train to sunday. woop!
Posted: Oct 13, 2008 3:05 pm

I paid $50 a ticket for wifey and my daughter and me to see Chuck Berry. You can't put a price on such things. Lounge act bass player singing the hits or not. High five!
Posted: Oct 13, 2008 4:15 pm

I'm a cheapskate...but my runners-up for most expensive ticket were all in the $40 range too. Ticketmaster's to blame for for the other 20 bucks.

I'm staying in Portland for two nights - any recommendations for cheap (but not flea bags) motels? What are some areas to steer clear of?
Thanks!

Friends have stayed at the Palms on Interstate and said it was okay. It's right on the Max (light rail) line...
Posted: Oct 14, 2008 2:29 pm

Not sure I'd stay in the Palms or any of those motels on Interstate. Most of them are more or less residential motels.

When I come to Portland next year for the Women of Faith Conference I will stay there again.
Posted: Oct 14, 2008 3:31 pm

Better question - what areas should I avoid? Someone told me to avoid Gresham and Clackamas areas... why is that?

Is most of Downtown pretty good?

I only went to Portland once with my band a few months ago, but was in and out and didn't really get a chance to see the city. Downtown seemed pretty cool.
Posted: Oct 14, 2008 4:02 pm

Hey, he said cheap!

Gresham / Clackamas are suburbs on the far east side of town. There's no real reason to be out that far, so don't worry about 'em. They're just crappy houses and strip malls anyway.

People have always told me to avoid Old Town / Chinatown late at night due to sketchy folks hanging around. But for the most part the worst you'll see Downtown are homeless folks sleeping in doorways.

try the Thriftlodge on 9 and Burnside. I think its ~$70 bucks a night - not the nicest place but it's walking distance to downtown and you can hang out all night at the doug fir with the beautiful people and pretend your staying at the jupiter.

otherwise google lloyd center or convention center hotels and price those out - they're central and on the light rail and close to get downtown. I had friends stay at the lloyd center red lion recently and I don't think it was too much -and the lounge there kicks ass.
Posted: Oct 15, 2008 12:31 am

Thanks for the advice! I'm from Los Angeles, so I'm sure the worst in Portland is still not as bad as the worst in LA, but why risk it right??
Posted: Oct 15, 2008 1:31 pm

As far as Portland hotels, I can't vouch for this place but the last I checked, it was cheap: http://www.mcmenamins.com/index.php?loc=60&id=482

Booked @ Hotel Max ...
Dang, that place is swank.

Anybody agreed on the pre-show drinkin' hole yet?!?

I'm probably gonna be getting into town late & not have a lot of time, so the closer to the venue, the better!

(Scariest part of this year's Halloween: 77 US$ cents on the Canuck buck!)
Posted: Oct 27, 2008 1:35 pm

I vote the Nite Lite based on its location, but I've never been there and don't know Seattle enough to know of anything else.
Posted: Oct 27, 2008 1:55 pm

Nite Lite is a go...some actual darryls lurk in there...those belltown bars all suck...hipster nightmares

the River Phoenix movie bar! I thought it sounded familiar.
Posted: Oct 27, 2008 4:43 pm

those belltown bars all suck...

I've had fun at Shorty's and the Lava Lounge. Too bad the Rendevous or the Frontier Room aren't as dangerous as they used to be.
Posted: Oct 27, 2008 6:20 pm

Shorty's was an alright looking spot...but the weekend I was there it was just hipster hell..not that i think we're gonna have any trouble getting our drink on anywhere...
Posted: Oct 27, 2008 7:17 pm

yeah, I got the same impression from Shorty's. loved the bar but not so much the clientele...
Posted: Oct 28, 2008 4:38 am

this show was the talk of the ash tray outside the Stork Club at Boodget roawk...I tried to support Riggler's argument with a few reasonable propositions of my own, but its was no use..bring a little umbrella and don't try to have too much fun

hmm, what seats you got?
Posted: Oct 29, 2008 5:13 pm

of course buying yours would mean trying to offload mine outside the venue.

what's the chance that the show will sell out?
Posted: Oct 29, 2008 6:17 pm

Section MF Row X Seats 11 and 12.

Did I mention how much this sucks.

And who the fuck is 'Kate Tucker & The Sons of Sweden' ... out of the 10,000 qualified Seattle/Tacoma bands I thought would be give their left nut to be on this bill?!?

The Sonics were great!

Even Little Steven couldn't drag 'em down.
Posted: Nov 2, 2008 1:01 pm

Wait,Little Steven played w/ the Sonics?!?!?? Huh? Details, dammit!!!

And it's so far so good in the South. I don't know what it means to miss Portland... yet.
Posted: Nov 2, 2008 5:17 pm

show was good. Lots of friends and party-acquaintances made the lobby pre-show party a blast. little steven introduced them and then came out and jammed Have...Travel and Louie Louie at the end. I hate that guy. The venue sucked for that show - would've been way better at a venue with dance floor to go apeshit on and then easier to look past the moments where they sounded like an uninspired bar band with extended blues solos. But there were killer moments that made it all worth while and Gerry's voice sounded great. Dude from Wailers joined em on Dirty Robber too. Now I rest.

don't forget the note from Eddie Vedder-- read aloud before the Sonics played-- where he invited himself onstage for a guest appearance, but then had a baby and couldn't make it.

we stuck around for Pierced Arrows at the Funhouse last night, too. In yet another incredible moment of Vedderocrity I was standing in line for a beer and the guy in front of me turns to his friend and says: "You know who was here last time Pierced Arrows played? Eddie fuckin' Vedder! Fred Cole's the epitome of grunge, man! Dead Moon was making grunge when Eddie was filling diapers!"

so yeah, it was a soul-searching weekend. thought a lot about Eddie Vedder's roots.
Posted: Nov 2, 2008 7:30 pm

what Petey said....second night house party with the coolouts was a blast as well....massive retardation going on...and some seriously Solid Moves....great trip...now I need to sleep for three days...
Posted: Nov 2, 2008 9:33 pm

That Eddie Vedder shit was way retarded.

So was the giant guy with the giant head directly in front of me.

"Werewolves Of London" was pretty lame.

Everything else was RAD.

Old man muppet Jaw needs no more cocaine. Thank god for Mamma bear. Lets see the pictures dudes-
Posted: Nov 3, 2008 11:26 am

Fun pre-party @ the Nite Lite ... missed Girl Trouble cuz we were still drinking there w/ Stu from The Fucking Eagles, then we all headed into the Paramount to hear them playing the Fucking Eagles album in it's entirety over the PA! Found out they were being considered as openers, but were bumped because of the "Fucking" in their name!
Lame seating set-up ... Gerry invited everyone down to the front to dance, only to have everyone ushered back by the meathead bouncers.
My girlfriend took some bad footage that I can post a link to later - but she was dancing, so it's all jumpy ... I guess I was yelling out "Silvio! Did you die?!?" when Little Steven was up there.
(I forgot about the Eddie Vedder note reading! First the Ramones, now this?!?)
Like many, I seized the opportunity for a piss break when the bass player broke into "Werewolves Of London" ... got a few laughs in the can when I asked if they were going to crack into "Brown-Eyed Girl" next.
Overall, it was what it was & I don't think I really was expecting any different ... Gerry's voice was as awesome as ever & the songs were pretty tight. I'm glad I made it down & got to meet up with everyone.

The party the next night at the Hellmouth House was a total blast! Tons of rad people from all over the place showed up & TONS of free booze! The Suspicions/Dead Ghosts/Dinosaur & The Missing Link/Coconut Coolouts were all fantastic ... in a final tribute to The Sonics, Mike Lucas got up & did "The Witch" with the CC's!
Fun times had by all ...

The venue sucked for that show - would've been way better at a venue with dance floor to go apeshit on

The sad thing is that they can take the fucking seats out of the floor of the Paramount. I don't know whose idea it was to keep them in for this show.

Watch a time lapse video of how easy it would have been for them to do it.

"Yeah fuck you too buddy!"

Jeez,Alec! I've only been gone a month,gimme a break!

"little steven introduced them and then came out and jammed Have...Travel and Louie Louie in the end"

"don't forget the note from Eddie Vedder- - read aloud before the Sonics played- - where he invited himself onstage for a guest appearance, but had a baby and couldn't make it."

"...the bass player beoke into 'Werewolves Of London..."

These factors make me feel a little better about missing this show. Definitely proves it ain't 1963 Tacoma anymore, just sayin'.

" 'You know who was here last time Pierced Arrows played? Eddie fuckin' Vedder! Fred Cole is the epitome of Grunge, man! Fred Cole was making Grunge when Eddie was filling diapers!' "

Yyyeeaahh,definitely not missing the Northwest.

Actually, I really enjoyed the show (Dad rock moments and seating arrangements aside). Hearing Gerry Roslie's ungodly wail in person was worth the price of admission.
