Well....it's that time again! SXSW March Madness.
And boy is it ever gonna be MAD!
Last year was even more killer than the year before!!

SXSW will be held March 12 - 16, 2008 in Austin, Texas

For info about the actual conference (SXSW 'official'), please visit http://www.sxsw.com

The very good (and very informative) folks over at DoneWaiting.com have already started with the information-sharing. Specifically, SXSW Clarifies Day Party Policy for Bands. Which has always been the policy from what I understand.

However, over at the Beerland camp, things will be taking a very, very different turn. It appears Beerland will become a NON-SXSW venue -- no SXSW wristbands or badges required (or honored) for entry; everyone will pay a cover for entry.

Beerland has been talking to several wonderful prospects and details are being worked out. I'm grateful to Beerland to allow me to continue to book the day shows at Beerland (Thurs, Fri & Sat only) and Max Dropout will book the Weds & Sun day shows again.

The evening shows are being coordinated through Beerland (Randall Stockton & Max Dropout) and since they have allowed me to have some minor input on those shows -- it is unlikely I will be booking other evening shows like in years past (unless it's after-parties!!) -- sad I won't be doing as many of my own shows like usual (sniff-last year RULED!) but , again, with the stuff Beerland may be getting I don't think anyone will want to leave.

I'm telling you this (among other things) because the ole' standard of me telling you/bands "if you come and play one my free day shows (all the way from Vancouver!!) -- I'll put you on two of the shows I'm coordinating" is also unlikely. Well, maybe a few as I will still have my Memphis Mary Bloody BBQ again on Sunday.

More info on all this as it develops -- it's only four months away. And there's lots to be done.

As ALWAYS: If you have even the slightest inkling to attend SXSW this year, reserve a room RIGHT NOW! And cancel it later. Hotel info halfway down page one - Jan 20, 2007

Questions? Email (please no MySpace messages -- gotta file all-a this shit, yo):

I hope to go, but things are looking grim.

every year, my spring break lands the week before sxsw and i can never go. :( sucky. damn you, university of memphis. always thwarting my party plans. grrrr.
Posted: Nov 15, 2007 6:17 pm

The last two years have been great, spent most of my time at Beerland anyway, looks like I'll be there all the time this time. Hopefully as SXSW aren't involved it'll mean we can get the details early and not the last minute like last year. This should be cool.

The very good (and very informative) folks over at DoneWaiting.com have already started with the information-sharing. Specifically, SXSW Clarifies Day Party Policy for Bands. Which has always been the policy from what I understand.

Any idea what "this" means?

"Also be aware that acts may not perform any public shows in Austin between March 12-15, 2008. (A public show is any show that charges admission to the general public and/or is advertised in any media available to the general public..."

Does this refer to advertising (with schedule) in the weekly/monthly papers?
Does this mean no handbills? posters? weblisting on a store's myspace?

"any media" is vague at best.

Looking forward to this year. Also looking at putting something together again. Just trying to figure out any new "rules".

Umm, I'm not really sure if this is the right place to beg like a dog and all, but my band the Welfare Mothers would like to play a day show on the Saturday or Sunday (do bands play on that day?) possibly. We have members of the Mirrors in our ranks, who are playing a Sat (the 15th)night show, I believe, so it would kind of fit with that, I suppose. If anyone has any thoughts, I'd appreciate it.
Posted: Jan 10, 2008 4:27 pm

Well, I was wrong - Mirrors play on Wed night. So, we could play anytime on Saturday, or even perhaps Friday night?? If anyone knows of anything...

plane tickets direct from nola to austin are $99 each way right now, that ain't half bad. if only there was some music I wanted to see there.

Can't wait to share all I'm working on!!

Hey Rich....got any updates? Line-Up info?

As far as my stuff is concerned, I am just waiting for a meeting --scheduled for next Thursday-- to take place. If that works out (or not), I will have my marching orders to start re-confirming everthing I've been trying to line up -- as it will pretty much dictate many, many decisions on who's playing where and what time.

To any reading that I've been speaking with -- almost there! I HOPE! HOPE! HOPE! I can secure what I'm trying to get -- there's a 50/50 chance of getting it (good enough odds for me!) -- it's perfect!

Thanks again to DoneWaiting for keeping us updated of new info.

Yr SXSW Planner has LOTS of show information I was unaware of (click on links for drop-down show information) that you can add to your itinerary by selecting the box where it’s organized by day, with color-coordinated map location information -- that you can save and share.

SO COOL. I'll be adding all my shows to it shortly. Even the shows at the BROKEN NECK are even being advertised! How exciting! Even Timmy's shows are there!

Here's my 'showlist' (shows of interest) that I just created after sifting through all available: check it out Doods! The DICKS & Sharon Tate's Baby @ Gallery Lombardi on Thursday!

I encourage you all to add your shows there -- shows are not populated by SXSW official -- so add yours!

Also on the (pretty f'n cool) website:

* Win A Trip to SXSW -- it's worth a shot

* Arriving to Austin for SXSW Wednesday, March 12, 10am …quot; 10pm and have a cell? And need a ride? -- it's worth a shot
Posted: Feb 12, 2008 12:59 pm

P.S. Please send show information to these places and they will get added to their informative sites as well as the Yr SXSW Planner site as well:

Cheers!

Sherry, I was just saying if anyone has the scoop you do, lol......

Hopefully the "teams" will work with instead of against if the see any problems.....

I just don't want to see anyone hurt...I've been on that SXSW rooftop with 100+ other people half drunk with only one small staircase to get off.....and unless you been in a situation such as a shooting in a bar (me twice, thanks NOLA!) or had to evacuate due to a fire (once, thanks illegal Chicago loft apartment!) it's hard to realize that some situations can be dangerous, such as selling double the legal occupancy to a really cool show, which is sweaty and fun until something bad happens (SXSW 2 years ago, I left...)

I'd like to think that the reason that horrible situations don't happen very often is because of rules and inspections, and when they do it's invariably do to some flagrant bullshit, of course the many times a place of mine had to be fire inspected, or any inspection, I groaned.....people with authority can be dicks sometimes....

I'll bet they're still recruiting people to be on these 'teams' COlby!

Posted: Mar 15, 2008 4:02 pm

It was great! Max and Randall and Beerland crew did it right. Packed house the whole night - Harlan blasted it off right - good rockin set with new stuff - with ringers like Joe T, Jack and JP who needs practice?! Ross's set was heavy on dick jokes and Joe T guitar licks. Smashing! Best set I've seen Jack do in a long time - and yes, that was Bill Roe on drums. CoCoComa stepped everything up a notch - and somehow Digital Leather matched it right afterwards. YOWZERS. We wound up with a little extra time so Gentleman Jessie played a 5 or 6 song set before the Carbonas tore everything apart. Everyone was awesome... thanks to the bands for coming down and everyone who came out to catch it.

here's a report on Pitchfork from an ex-Memphian about SXSW... wonder how these people end up at Pitchfork?

answer: their haircut.

------------------------------

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/49290-sxsw-friday-tyler-gri sham

I grew up in Memphis, a city with a lot of musical past, but a somewhat shaky musical present. Aside from Jay Reatard's hepatitic punk scene, one's options for a weekend concert in the Bluff City are rather few and far between. But for the past decade or so, Snowglobe has been our rock band, dance band, jam band, and any other musical niche that needed to be filled on a given Friday.

snowglobe's great. pitchfork bloggers suck.

hepatitic?

5:00 - 5:30 Hipshakes

Thank you, Dave! Totally fun - NO problems once again -- SOOOO fun!

Check this shit out -- I was with the Caboners on the bridge and unless we were all completely fucking blind and clueless (shut it!) the only truth to this fucking story was there probably were 1000+ people there.

I did worm my way over to the band --- still couldn't see or even hear the music so yeah -- not much fun so we just hung out towards the entrance and I think we pretty much seen it end.

"Police watch riot at SXSW
Fucked Up

A riot occurred in the early hours of this morning (March 15) on Lemar Pedestrian Bridge in the midst of the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, during an impromptu party gig by hardcore rockers Fucked Up.

Fucked Up were playing an unofficial gig at around 4AM (CMT), when fans who had attended SXSW gigs earlier in the night began congregating. Soon around 1,000 fans were on the bridge.

Fired up by the music, the fans began to mosh, creating a mosh-pit 30-people wide. The bridge began to buckle and bounce under the weight of the crowd, which prompted many fans to jump into the river to escape.

Police soon arrived at the scene, but realised that they were powerless to halt the riot and could do nothing but wait until it quelled.

Fucked Up’s guitarist, Mike Haliechuck told NME. COM that he thought the bridge was going to collapse, explaining why fans felt they had to jump into the water.

“I could feel the bridge going up and down " it was crazy,” he said. “The police couldn’t do anything, so they just had to wait.”

It is not thought that any fans were hurt in the incident."

Love from Chicago Meatball Jim DeRogatis

From there, I crossed the street to the lovably grungy Beerland, probably the non-SXSW venue with the best bookings throughout the week. My original plan was to pay the cover and camp out until the band I wanted to see: Denton, Texas, garage-punks the Marked Men.

Pretty mad I missed Flying Glass. I was drunkenly pogo-ing to Wax Museums over at Longbranch right about then.

Highlight of the week was Keith Morris really digging my band. He came to see us a second time too. Then I saw him sing some Flag/Jerks songs w/ Fucked Up.

Thanks to everyone who put shows together and bands for playing, this was the best and cheapest SXSW Ive been to. House Shows, BBQs, Showcases, Record Stores, everything was great. 4 more years!

Hey Sherry, thanks for setting up so many great shows! Our instore at Trailer Space was the best show we played all week, as far as good times went. Spot is a real cool guy and all of the bands on the bill were awesome.

Hope everyone enjoyed their sunglasses!!

Hey Thanks, Megan! I gave my pair to Louie-Louie -- he left wearing them to the west coast so they are on a two-month tour of the US. Very clever idea!

Great video, Trent!
Great photos, Jason!
