SXSW is really pissing me off this year.

Putting the wristbands on each band member so they can't turn around and sell them (a big source of income for many of the bands that play, since they don't get paid shit).

Calling clubs and asking who is playing day parties since bands are only supposed to play their "official" showcase and nowhere else.

Threatening bands that play "unofficial" shows that they will be kicked off of their showcase.

Making every crappy frat-boy shot bar in town an "official venue" even though they may lack a stage or PA. There was a dj at my "venue" (ha ha - a tent on the patio with three other bands nearby drowning shit out) playing crappy pop dance shit while the CPC Gangbangs played. The sound was freaking terrible, so much so that I have no idea what they sound like, really.

SXSW volunteers drunk on their power everywhere you go. They wouldn't let me into Beerland at 7:45 on Wednesday, because the "doors weren't open yet" - WHEN THE FIRST BAND STARTED AT 8! I was just going to have a beer before the show started. None of the bands who play Beerland need this kind of "I've got a backstage pass and you don't" douchebaggery. C'mon.

Sherry, I mentioned to Randall the same things you and I talked about and he seems pretty open to it.

The small bands/labels don't need SXSW. Just come to town anyway, to capitalize on the increased number of people here. But you don't need a wristband anymore (everybody plays a free show somewhere) and if you are a small label like Hook or Crook, Goner, Contaminated, etc. you sure as hell don't need a "registration package" and "official showcase"...

Off soapbox now.

Yeah I was pissed off last night, couldn't get into the Woggles/Clutters show even though the place was not full. After a shouting match with some stupid slave/volunteer, we went to Casino.

Note To Self: fire backstabbing asshole guitar player that would rather go on a surf trip w/his girlfriend than play SXSW and tour with us.

Here's a writeup on the goner showcase on the MEDLEYVILLE website from WFMU's Joe B!

In that short time, the punk haven has spawned a label (also called Goner Records),

so what's the real story on what went down at the vice afterparty? they closed it down with stories of balconies collapsing, and 5 or 6 ambulances out in front of the joint....

can't find nothing on austin chron site...

I went to go see Against Me at the Vice party. I heard about this band the Overnight lows and I think they should change their name. I went to Woodys south to see them, and the singer with the big head was really drunk. He could'nt even play his guitar. The fat drummer was getting mad and playing emo drum beats, and the girl bass player was drunk too. So, I think they should change their name to the Overnight Blows. The big big disapointment of 2007. Shame on you New york times for mentioning them in that article about Quintron. I'll never ask them to be friends with me on Myspace. No no no no!

Reigning Sound was awesome, as were the Woggles, The Marked Men, Strange Boys, Turbonegro, Jack-O, Tanlines, Chumps, Herat Attacks, Holy Shit, a band that might have been part of the Spits, Los Straightjackets w Big Sandy, half the Stooges set, and tons of others....oh yeah and freakin Yo Majesty was rad.

White Savage, Jay Reatard, Overnight Lows, Live Fast Die, Carbonas, The Marked Men, Cheap Time, Yuma Territorial Prison Guards and Juiceboxxx were the highlights for me.

why are all music gernalists are pussies?

This is great !!!! Hell came first, in the form of the band Yuma Territorial Prison Guards, which played at a revolting bar that some post-frat-house genius actually named Beerland. At least last night, Yuma was a two-piece starring a singer-guitarist, who sat down next to his drummer at the very back of the stage, so that only a handful of audience members could actually see them. Showmanship! The band's songs were of the primitive rock & roll variety. The singer spoke in a thick accent redolent of America's Southern region; the drummer was young and pudgy, with long hair barely concealing his scowl. During a break in the music, the singer turned to his drummer. "When this motherfucker turned 21, you know what I did?" he drawled to the crowd. "I jerked his dick." The drummer looked down in shame, perhaps because this was such a manifest liethere's no way he has turned 21 yet. "Come on," the singer said. "Don't be shy." The drummer shot him a scary look; then, they swallowed drinks and started banging and wailing away.

I wish everyone could have been there to see Marsh challenge Mike to arm wrestling OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER and then drink a shot each time he lost.

Marsh eventually ended up passed out in our van UNDER all our gear.

gee, this is nice (on Mary Weiss' set):

The glare of a spotlight literally bothered her, and she began her set complaining about it. A performer could be getting zapped with electricity, and I don't want to hear about it. Sound problems, light problems, monitor problems...keep them to yourself. They're not my concern.

I would think that crappy sound would be of concern to someone who's paid to see a show, but I guess that's just me.

Anyone who tried to go to that party near sound on sound Fri. night, if you got off onto airport at I-35 and saw a major wreck, that was me. Some asshole slammed into me and I spun around like 4 times hitting the guardrails. Overall the rest of the weekend was fun, and I didn't need no fucking wristband. Oh and I missed the first half of the Sat. beerland day show because my friend from out of town stopped and helped this girl who was crying on the side of the road. It turned out she had a crazy boyfriend who beat her up and left her on the side of the road so we ended up taking her to the greyhound station so she could get back home to Florida.

And they turned me on to the Pointed Sticks. Didn't know. Amazing.

Overnight New Lows

The Overnight Lows "set" at Woody's was actually one of the high points of my SXSW experience. Hilarious drunkeness!

And I still say this looks more like a pickle than a catus!

Pat Todd & the Rank Outsiders,

It was a fuckin' blast playing with Pat last week. Unfortunately, I had to miss seeing a bunch of stuff cause we were playing so much. But I saw the Stooges, Black Rose Band, Beasts of Bourbon, the whole Norton showcase and even got to meet Marsh.

It's a pickle!

Obviously. (And, apparently, I can't spell cactus. C-A-C-T-U-S. Still brain dead from the 3 flights it took to get me home yesterday.)

Erin, Sean and Justin played a few Spits songs. The Black Lips wanted this all-girl band from Atalnta called the Coathangers to play, they played 3-5 songs then Black Lips did the same.

Jay's show @ Scoot Inn - duringn the last song Jay went a little Jay Reatard on whatever was in his way (knocking over a speakers and shit - nothing bad). Then some awesome (DUMB) person (who clearly doesn't know how unpredictable Jay can be) provided some last minute entertainment by running over to Jay (I think Jay was on his knees) and did some kind of pussy slide kick something towards Jay (I think).

Jay just sat on him and started thrusting his crotch to doods face -- then J put the V-part of his guitar on doods neck holding him to the ground. It looked really fucking scary but I don't think that dumbass was getting hurt. I think I was slightly shocked or else I would have got a photo of that shit so maybe it would end up in time fucking magazine!

THEN. A local I know ran over to the stage and (I think) kicked Jay's (guitar?) again I guess to make him quit while some trusty side kick chick stood there scowling at him so Jay got up and just pushed the girl away.

Yeah. It was rad.
Jay Reatard Blood Visions is sooooooo fucking amazing it hurts.

At first i tried to put these together and it didn't add up,but then i realized Justin was from Clorox Girls,is that right? Makes sense to me.

We went to the earlier Saints show at Dog & Duck and it was dissapointing, but the Hoodoo Gurus were great. I heard that the Saints showcase at the Blender bar was a much better show.

The Stooges on the other hand was the best thing I saw all week, Iggy looked good up there, the songs sounded amazing.. I went in early and it was worth it. A group of us just hung out and drank till it was time to get our places up front.

I want to say thanks to Blackout Booking and Scottie Diablo and the bands that played my instore showcase(s).

Agreed. I wish I would have seen Jaw Reatard holding a guy down with his flying V, but after we blew the generator (after White Savage had also blown the generator) I was bummed and wanted to go someplace else and get my drink on. To add insult to injury, we couldn't get into the goddamn Clutter/Woggles show so we had to settle for Casino El Camino.

first up: fuck SXSW, so glad the greasy tight jeaned homos and biz gooks are gone. but NOW, after the fact, while i'm in rehab, i got 2-3 more reasons why i gotta get out of this city: schooley, sherri and a couple other hatin' nitpickin' BITCHES, mostly associated with something called "Factory People" (((((?????))))

sherri i love u but bite me bitch you don't put .05% of the labor cathy and I do to bring some good shit here. we're not lookin for shine, but just to clear a little of the SHIT you 2 smear on our faces so we can feel like humans. all this petty horseshit and speculation you web-board nerdy shitbags generate. call me, bitches! ranting on a board, ha! OK, here it comes:

regarding your CONCERNS: we gave band members passes one by one because year after year we'd hand over a wad of them to ______ (fill in with huge label, agency, manager company) who often then paid the bands a petty "per diem," treaating those passes as the comapny's property, and did what the fuck they wanted to with the passes. crack trade, favors to assholes, selling, who knows. those "contacts" of the bands were spoiled to no end. you obviously took offense to our blanket policy of us trying to make sure BANDS GOT WHAT THE FUCK THEY WANTED, $225 OR PASSES -- WHICH DO HAVE SOME VALUE.

a certain band we saw playing nighttime against a beerland show prompted a 2-minute call that was petty in hindsight. we're trying to ensure the REAL clubs don't have their OWN bands competing with them. but it was no biggie. i could eighteen horseshits how many shows REAL bands play, bands who aren't <<insert stupid big british buzz band whose management insists on the biggest show when they end up playing a crillion times and threatening the draw of the huge room you put them in and that huge room's owner is screaming at you>>

and thanks for raising the concerns with randall, who i met with yesterday and who does not read this fanboy geektard bulletin board crap. (actually this is the only board i like, LOL! LOL! LOL!). he's more real than your fucking pseudo promoter whiner lazy assholes who just sweat and speculate without calling me. and sherri dahling -- if you woulda asked me for a stupid "wristband" i would have given it to you in advance instead of seeing you at Lava Lounge at CPC, Sherri, and handing you one just cuz i wanted to please you. man lava lounge is not a real club by any means but i liked that show, what was so god-awful about it? there can't be eight beerlands, bitches! that would be called paradise! armegeddon armegeddon bush blair bin laden we're all going to heaven holy shit holy hell holy war!

(wow, this just popped in my head: FaggotCraig, back in October or so at a Golden Boys hole in the wall show: "Sherri you heard of CPC Gangbangs their 7" is sick!", Sherri: "I think so. I don't know." you gonna make me look bad then right back atcha, knowitall)

cram it up your ass and feed me your diarrhea of snotty cuntsauce. schooley you got one good sound but can't write a song to save your life. it's amazing how easily a compact disc can shatter. i kinda cut myself with it. was worth it.

wow all this ranting for 2 assholes! killer!

all any of you speculative assholes ever have to do is email my cockeating homosexual home address: craig@emperorjones.com

i hate this fucking snobby town. austin thinks a lil too highly of itself.

a good friend of mine OD'd last night. he's gone. fuck the world. fuck you all. Damon is gone. it can't be real. none of thios is real.
Posted: Mar 24, 2007 9:42 pm

Awww...Craig. I'm so sorry. And so sorry about your friend.

I would send this private, but I there's no way I can't respond here. I've ot nothing to hide.

I did bitch at first about 'SXSW' when everything was frustrating -- info not yet available -- etc, then when I realized everyone else was too, then I was like, fine.....whatever.

I have never claimed to work as hard as you guys do. All the shit I do is completly and totally self serving - I just wanna see these bands - as many as possible as many times as possible and get a stupid as possible.

I don't call to bug you cause 1) I think you;re too busy and 2), I dont' want you to tell me no. It's true.

I;m not bitchin about most of things you're angry about above. I didn't raise ANY 'concerns' with Randall. Band passes dont' affect me at all and I would NEVER ask you for a wristband. Why would I? But it was VERY thougftful for you to give me one! THX! It was helpful. And kind.

Also....anyone that knows me, knows this for a fact....I LOVE going to different venues - I dont' give a fuck where it is if my favorite bands are playing there!! I got to see bands in two different venues that I never had been to before this year. Sweet. CPC was fucking fantastic @ LL (and everywhere else too) -- p.s. I also don't claim to know SHIT about sound either). And even Randall knows that although Beerland is my home, I LOVE LOVE seing shows in other (odd) places. If it's got a bar and sound, sign me the fuck up. Oh and also, I NEVER claim to know shit about anything, that's what I rely on SOOOOO mnay people on this board for and I AINT too proud to ask!!

Alright....it's ok if you hate me, but I want you to know that told soooo many people during SXSW -- including Eric (ask 'em!) even the boys staying in my house -- that although I'm putting on lots of great shows, I REALLY love it when they are taking advantage of the festival doing other things and going to other shows. There's just soooo-soooo much. For everyone. And it's awesome. Thanks to you and Cathy for your hard work!
Posted: Mar 24, 2007 10:48 pm

i don;t hate you i love you madly which is the only reason i said all that shit plus i'm crippled big time in the head and back ignore that i'm embarrassed wish i could delete it i got some idiot burnt out fat directors who say stupid shit they're not evil just retarted and fuck it i can't take this shit seriously. dying to get out of bed to see black joe lewis and little richard at 7pm but keep hearing my friend' s sotry of the horror of last night echoing in my head and i'm crooked this is a forum for ass-ripping music not psych therapy sorry everyone i'm a dumdum. shout out to max he's a real dude. has there been a band called psych therapy yet? 60s wah scuzz with flowery positive lyrics. debut album "british teeth" coming soon. gotDAMN i saw a lot of blokes with rageddy crooked-ass teeth who had them damn NME haircuts and clothes. we're finna shop that bitch, holla at me goner

Even though I was horrifically ill and missed most of this SXSW, based upon some of this year and all of last I really think that SXSW is generally awesome....everything has problems, but at least it isn't intrinsically lame and/or corrupt (CMJ?)....

Austin is a great town, probably the best music town, as far as rock and country, I have ever been to....there is snobbyness everywhere, even ATX, but it pales in comparison to many other places I will not name....

Oh, I just realized I somehow fucked up and left out the Imaginary Icons on Friday VoT show. I'll have to fix everything (the info and add photos) but not today - I stayed up from 10pm-till 5am working on this shit Friday night, half of yesterday and most of today. I'm over it. I will fix it soon. Sorry.

Buy a wristband or South by Southwest will turn you in to the authorities

AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF
Sunday, March 25, 2007

You probably shouldn't be advertising any funny business about yourself right now in the Austin Chronicle personals unless you want the Fire Department to come by and hose you down.

That's a joke. Still, I never thought I'd see the day when those libertine hippies from the Chronicle who make oodles of cash on the South by Southwest Music Festival would turn to the narc side, I mean the dark side.

See, last week, as is usual when South by Southwest goes on, there were a bunch of free parties around town at businesses.

Folks like to hit the parties because you can get in without spending a bunch of money on an expensive South by Southwest wristband or badge.

Trouble is, it turns out there's a fairly new rule in Austin that requires businesses throwing big parties to have something called a "change of use" permit.

The permit allows parties of 50 or more folks. If you don't have the permit, mean old Mr. Austin Fireman can turn off your disco ball and send everybody home.

So last week, after the South by Southwest people supplied the Fire Department with a list of the parties going on around town and some of the parties got shut down by the Fire Department, it smelled a bit fishy.

Especially since the city just gave South by Southwest a $90,000 break on city fees.

It's looking to me like the South by Southwest people don't want you to be able to get into anything without paying them first. Did they steal the manual from the University of Texas, or what?

One of the parties that got axed was at Blue Genie Art Industries on Springdale Road. About 600 people showed up. Then, when the Fire Department arrived, about 600 people left. Imagine all the wonderful stories they're going to tell about Austin when they get home.

I suspect the party would have lasted longer than 35 minutes if the owners had known about the permit.

"That's the really irritating part of the whole thing," said Dana Younger, one of the owners. "This permit just went on the books last year, and they never told anybody that you needed it."

Then there was the party at Factory People, a clothing store on South Congress Avenue. The Fire Department shut them down, too.

Take a hike, folks. And don't forget to pick up your copy of the Chronicle on the way out.

The South by Southwest people say they provided the Fire Department with the list of places having parties because they wanted to level the playing field. Hey, if a South By club has to have a permit, why shouldn't everybody else?

Well, maybe so. But I'm wondering if South by Southwest could make even more money by going after other competing events, like, you know, funerals going on at the same time as the music festival. I mean, you don't need a badge to get into Weed-Corley-Fish, right?

Too bad South by Southwest can't change the rules to require people to have on wristbands to get in to see Uncle Ernie.

The way things are going, I wouldn't be surprised.

Yeah it is Sher! My pleasure to tape, edit and share, the audience cheered when he came out, but I couldn't tell if it was because another song was up or what, they seemed to actually know their lips though, heard some shouts for stuff like, "Make It" and "Bomberboy".

My video of the Red 7 day show is better (it's coming, but my net connection makes it hard to get a reasonable amount of stuff uploaded) even though the show was kinda lame (18 minutes seems short for even a showcase set), I don't blame em though, the Red 7 crowd was kinda just melting from the heat.
