Goner Message Board / Memphis / OK, Best Drummer In Memphis?
Posted: Oct 11, 2005 10:50 pm

The guitar thread trips me out...this should be interesting.

I'll seperate 'em...

HARD ROCK/METAL - Rockbert (Joint Chiefs, Gringos)
TECHNICAL - Paul Taylor
FUNK/SOUL - Willie Hall (Bo-Keys)
OVERALL SOLID - Paul Buchinany, Bubba Bonds, John Argroves, Roy Berry, Andy Saunders.

do dead guys count? i listened to Booker T & the MG's on my drive from Tallahassee to Atlanta yesterday and that guy was the BEST
Posted: Oct 11, 2005 11:03 pm

do dead guys count?

Just list "Historical" Drummer...your choice "Al Jackson"
Posted: Oct 11, 2005 11:03 pm

Rockbert

Yep.
Posted: Oct 11, 2005 11:25 pm

Hey, how 'bout those who can drum and chew gum (err...I mean sing!) at the
same time! I nominate Ross Johnson, Forrest Hewes (he's still Memphis to me!) and my wife...
Posted: Oct 11, 2005 11:34 pm

Ross Johnson sings?
Posted: Oct 12, 2005 12:03 am

Posted: Oct 12, 2005 12:12 am

My favorites are Willie "too big" Hall and Lori McStay. (It's changed to McStay, right Jughead?)
Posted: Oct 12, 2005 2:11 am

Rockbert, hands down...I would say he is the only rock drummer in Memphis that knows what a pocket is.
Posted: Oct 12, 2005 4:07 am

Paul Taylor and Harry Peel. And maybe some kid on the Fairley High drum line.

This technique is known as the "Phil Collins."

I don't know about technical stuff, but I know who I like to see, and Robert, Mouse Rocket (and several other bands, way too many to count)

And Lori, multi-talented girl, but I really like her on drums.

Paul DieRotzz is the fastest stoned drummer I've seen! As in playing fast while stoned or something...
Posted: Oct 12, 2005 10:11 pm

i think it may be a little overstated that robert is the only rock drummer who knows what a pocket is. harry peel has the deepest pockets in memphis, although he is not putting them to the rock enough, he certainly can. robert barnett is pocket personified and rocks plenty. and although i'm a little biased, john argroves is really really damn good. rockbert is absolutely amazing though!
Posted: Oct 13, 2005 12:23 am

No doubt. Rockbert is one of the best on earth. Roy Berry is good when he gets drugs or hookers before the show.
Posted: Oct 13, 2005 1:28 am

me naturally, but for my $$ it's
the guy from Mash-O-Matic
Paul Taylor
Jeff Bouk(kinda Mimphis)
Posted: Oct 13, 2005 2:22 pm

I would also like to invite Cody Dikinson and James Blasingame to the drum circle. shirts and stink optional.

I think Dave Clark did that before Charlie Brown, I mean Phil Collins.

John Argroves is awesome. It's impossible to be in a bad mood around that guy. When you other drummers are ready for a real man's snare drum, he'll custom build a 40-pound monster for you that sounds like Thor's hammer coming down on your fucking skull.
Posted: Oct 14, 2005 5:47 pm

I love a man with a MONSTER snare!
Posted: Oct 14, 2005 6:10 pm

I would have to day that Jay Sheffield, Christian Bates and Mr Argrove are some damn fine drummers. Rockbert brings it hard though...
Harry Peel has deeper pockets than Nell Carter in 501's...
Kevin Smith (bumpercrop) is a hellafied drummer when he wants to be..
Robbie Cash too...
And, hell, everyone listed so far can play their asses off
Ed, from on a dead machine and piston honda, fine rock drummer...

back to work...

After the show the other night I'm gonna have to give it up to Robin (OG3,Guacos) for being the most improved drummer. She went from "tap" to "thunder" over the past year!
Who is Harry Peel?
Posted: Oct 16, 2005 9:44 pm

Harry Peel plays a lot down at the Blue Monkey.

Harry Peel plays a lot down at the Blue Monkey.

Who does he play with? I don't party at the monkey much.
Posted: Oct 16, 2005 10:16 pm

I've seen him with the Selvidge crew and Ross Rice. He's good. Don't know about the best, but, he's good.
Posted: Oct 17, 2005 8:01 pm

Michael Murder. Evil Army reigns supreme. Death to false metal.
Posted: Oct 21, 2005 3:27 pm

I'm the 2nd best female drummer in the world!
Posted: Oct 21, 2005 3:35 pm

right behind Sheila E.
Posted: Oct 21, 2005 3:50 pm

actually, it's Mo Tucker.
Posted: Oct 21, 2005 4:10 pm

Steve Parkinson is a really great drummer.
Posted: Oct 21, 2005 6:32 pm

Jeff Burch. Is he playing around town? He was touring with Tinsley Ellis.
Posted: Oct 22, 2005 4:23 am

SECRET WEAPON - Jack Yarber
Posted: Oct 26, 2005 7:40 pm

Who is Robbie Cash? I agree with the Pauls and Rockbert...

There's a new kid in town
Leh Sammons (my son in law).....lives here now after escapingKatrina in New Orleans.
He's touring Europe for the next two weeks but we hope he finds a good band here to gig with.
He's fuckin' amazing......living in New Orleans for the past 5 or 6 years done the boy some good

I forgot Leh moved back to town! Definitly at the top of the list...he shreds the kit!!! I didn't know you were Tracy's mom!
Posted: Nov 5, 2005 2:58 pm

I be Tracy's dad.
Leh is on tour with Andi Hoffman and the B-Goes.
Andi is huge in Europe and Leh is digging the lifestyle. Tour buses, nice hotels, beautiful scenery.
They wind up in Andi's home town in Switzerland recording a live project.
Life is tough for Mr Sammons eh?

Need to get the word around about Leh so he'll not have to drive to New Orleans for gigs in the future.....he's played more down there than here since the hurricane.
Posted: Nov 5, 2005 3:01 pm

Oh and dig this......Leh and Tracy are living in Isaac Haye's old love shack......cool ass place with a sunken living room.....very swinging 60's.
I want a doorbell that plays the wah wah guitar from Shaft....how cool would that be?
Posted: Nov 5, 2005 7:23 pm

That's awesome! I talked with Leh about it and I don't know who he could play with here in town. He's almost too good!
Posted: Nov 5, 2005 10:03 pm

You're all on crack! Stupid crackheads.

Damn, put me in touch with the guy. I've got git-tar chops for days, and I haven't had a project together in a while. Would I have seen Leh around town with anyone??

Oh, and Buck, Harry Peel also plays with David Cousair and Sam Shoup on Wednesdays at the Monkey. Pure taste ...

Howard "Bulldog" Grimes-- in Al Jackson's shadow, but fortunately for Howard, he preferred the company of more subdued women than Al.
'Dog's still got it, too.

Anybody seen Chris Coble in a while?
I'd almost put him up there with Rockbert...if he's still even plays.
Posted: May 18, 2009 4:40 pm

I'd almost put him up there with Rockbert

even though I like Chris, he's good people...I would have to say "oh hell no" to this
Posted: May 18, 2009 7:17 pm | Edited by: greg O

Chris was great. He was the drummer in my high school band and later was the drummer for the Painkillers. Is he still playing?
Posted: May 19, 2009 1:47 am | Edited by: Luke Warm

Back around Halloween Todd Gringo told me that Coble has grown his hair out all long and curly and is now training dogs for a living.
But no word on whether he's still playing or not.

In case he isn't familiar to you , he is the original and current drummer of The Box Tops.
Posted: May 23, 2009 11:23 am

I can do THAT!!!!!! Duh!
Posted: May 23, 2009 4:55 pm

original and current drummer of The Box Tops
Man, he's good! What a waste of talent. Did he play for Ronnie & the Devilles also, or is he just playing their kit?

I'm gonna add 18 year old Andrew Denham from the Dirty Streets. Really fun to watch play. He's got that Mitch Mitchell/Bonham "elbows out" head band steez goin'. I doubt half these folks were as good as he is when they were his age.
Posted: May 24, 2009 2:19 am

Did he play for Ronnie & the Devilles also,

YEAH , that was his band.
Posted: May 25, 2009 12:16 pm

Jack O Yarber: best drummer!! And he also plays guitar, and he also has SOUL, and he has the blues, and he rocks. What more do you need?
Posted: Jan 17, 2018 1:16 pm
