90 Teens Pregnant in One Memphis School

5 of 10 states w/ highest teen pregnancy rates are in the south

surprised?
Posted: Jan 15, 2011 8:35 am

The south likes to do it.
Posted: Jan 15, 2011 10:11 am

the south's gonna do it again, and again...

well because of bible thumpers disallowed sex education in the schools, so many kids are misinformed. they only say "don't do it." that is it. a lot of them don't think they can get preggo the first time they have sex. their parents don't give a shit enough about them to talk about it either. it's sad. of course they are going to get knocked up without access to contraceptives or any education on how to use them. most of them are too embarrassed to go to the store to buy them too, so they just do without. and do it, they do. sex ed programs that only preach abstinence are a big fat fucking joke.

most of these girls moms were teen moms as well and they were raised by their grandmamas. The daddys are never made nor feel they have any sort of responsibility. The cylce just continues. Not a new or suprising issue. There were numerous teen moms when I was in junior high in say...83-85.

and yes...sex ed classes are a total joke. Dwelling on abstinence is a total waste of time. Folks are gonna get down!

Folks in the South are poor.

Poor people like to fuck.

Idiocracy is a documentary.

Man, if I was a teenager living in destitution in Frayser I'd be fucking the pain away too, just to have something to look forward to every day. Kids are gonna do it regardless. Just give them access to contraception, solid facts about sex, and leave it be.
Posted: Jan 19, 2011 7:33 am

There was no shortage of pregnant girls walking around when I was at Frayser high. Hell, I seem to remember one or two when I was at Frayser elem. so this problem isn't new but it is compounding. It is a cycle that has been repeating itself for a few generations now. More disturbing is that one neighborhood in Memphis has the highest child mortality rate in the country. Obviously these facts are all related, pretty sad.

I didn't have any kids before I moved to Memphis then -BAM! I had three.

what's truly 'hilarious' is that comprehensive sex ed reduces both abortion rates and the welfare rolls - things that cracker ass, christ-bitten knuckledraggers (you know, real Amurcans) profess to hate. but not enough to see that the underprivileged kids in their areas have half a shot at a normal, baby-free adolescence.

Is anyone else from Memphis but not currently living there and watching how this story playing out in the national media? There's literally no discussion of the poverty in Frayser. The national media is making it sound like these kids saw too much Teen Mom and thought it'd be a good idea.

hate!that show- what the hell IS mtv trying to tell young folks?
half the day is "teen mom" or "16 and pregnant"
then at night its shows like jersey shore and some new show called "skins"

its like mtv is telling them - you can be one of two things- preggo or pornstar.

Fuck it. I'd seriously consider supporting a law that demands giving every male a vasectomy at birth.

Especially if the law had a clause that would only allow a reversal of the vasectomy if the male had a HS diploma, and x amount of dollars in the bank (or a job held for at least a year), or after two years of military service.

It sucks that kids can't drink before they're 21, but they can fuck up their lives, their babies' lives, and their families' lives as soon as there is grass on the field.

heh. TT, I've floated similar ideas - perhaps a bit more liberally.

e.g. incentivize adolescent males to voluntarily check their dna into publicly funded sperm bank and then undergo a vasectomy. then when they make the active decision that they are ready to be fathers - regardless of age or income (hey, it's America after all) - they can check their boys out and have them inseminated into their wife, girlfriend, neighbor, I don't fucking care. as long as it makes parenthood a conscious decision.

I realize the ummm Orwellian implications will scare off the bleeding hearts AND the uber anti-government crowd... and it would initially be expensive as all hell. But the long term net positive effect on government spending, education, crime prevention would be astounding. In my not-so-humble opinion.

anyway, til then let's make sure underprivileged adolescents are getting proper sex ed and access to birth control. all my rich white friends (even the fucking Baptists) did.

Yep. It's like the old SNL skit: "Lower your expectations!"

I also think it would be benificial to require an application be filled out in order to reproduce.
Just like the Rh test when applying for a marriage licence.

I also theorize that sexual activity without the pregnancy consequence would bring forth a dramatic increase in STDs, and perhaps "give birth" to a new one due to more (fukkin') activity and bactirial/viral evolution.

Just give them access to contraception, solid facts about sex, and leave it be.

They already have plenty of that. I'm no fan of unfettered reproduction by underclass teens that will likely parasite off of productive hosts to finance their family development, but going to a China styled one-child policy or Science Czar John P. Holdren's mass sterilization plan via food (laid out in "Ecoscience: Population, Resources, Environment") is even worse. The population increases in the USA are result of illegal and legal immigration, one of which needs to be stopped and the other severely limited until the economy can provide enough jobs for native born US and the population stabilizes.

this is not true. there is a lack of education and a lot of misinformation that these kids are getting from their friends. it's sad, and a product of our society's unwillingness overall to de-shackle themselves from this false puritanical crap that they've been hitched to since the victorian era. if the kiddos were properly educated and had access to contraceptives, and sex wasn't considered taboo or glorified (by mtv in the form of being prego or a porn star), maybe they'd stand half a chance.
Posted: Jan 31, 2011 8:58 pm

What elle said. These kids do not have easy access to contraception.

while this is true it doesn't erase the seemingly rampant teenage pregger sauce cookin up in the ghettos and nowhere lands USA. I'm of the education is key faction as well. I've been to 90% of the inner city schools in Mempho and while there were several making a college effort (Ida B. Wells elementary comes to mind) in providing a strong school atmosphere, most were simply over burdened with the task of keeping their sh** together and keeping kids from trampling teachers or each other in one way or another. Inner city schools need some kind of major help ...

also, kids need something to do and there aint crap to do, and no one guiding them to do anything ... speaking from experience/observation.

Damn! Who knew marriage would fix everything?

@Robin - I'm not from Memphis but did find the reporting on this story troubling and very over-simplified.

And yup, Elle is 100% right. I sorry, can't get behind eugenics and other anti-choice policy "fixes."

Not to mention that positing eugenics and mass sterilizations as a legitimate solution to this problem is ridiculous, besides being merely offensive. Like, really? That's your answer?

Yes, and you can stay offended.

Your parents are part of the problem.

I actualy think that's a genius idea.

Testicle-smashing for everyone!

They don't do the blood test in TN anymore. I think they still do in MS. All Mr. Possum and I had to do was sign the big book, show we were of age and pay $90.

It's funny. they used to refuse marriage licenses to people who shouldn't breed, and all sex out of wedlock was illegal. it was a simple but effective system that relied on shotgun weddings to fill in the gaps.

They didn't have DNA testing back then, so protecting your daughter's paternity with deadly force was considered much more reasonable.

Remember, it's marriage THEN love, not the other way around. Sex has nothing to do with it, really. In all non-western societies that have been civilize 5K+ years, this is what culture teaches. Only an immature upstart culture like western society would teach something as detrimental as the concept of romantic love being a future determiner of fiscal ability to support children.

You'd have to believe your relationship was fated by some spooky God for any of that to make sense. Which explains the tradition of having people married by priests....

And this coming from a guy who's mom had kid when she was 17... AND MARRIED.

I blame hippies for all of this.
