Goner Message Board / Memphis / ICE STORM OF DEATH IS REALLY COMING
Posted: Jan 28, 2010 6:46 am

Uh oh.
I just checked the hour by hour on weather.com and it looks like it's going to get pretty rough.
Posted: Jan 28, 2010 10:18 am

I'm going to Costco. Anyone need a case of round bread slices or jerk chicken flavored pistachios for the storm?
Posted: Jan 28, 2010 11:09 am

THEY JUST CALLED IT WHITE DEATH ON THE RADIO!!!!
Posted: Jan 28, 2010 11:17 am

Posted: Jan 28, 2010 11:46 am

Woah!
Posted: Jan 28, 2010 11:57 am

34. Rain. That's all that's going to happen.
Posted: Jan 28, 2010 12:19 pm

WET DEATH!
Posted: Jan 28, 2010 1:01 pm

dirtywhite, pick me up some detergent if they have seventh generation or Method. Just toss it over the back fence on your way home?
Posted: Jan 28, 2010 1:02 pm

And Jack Stands, we WILL have piles of snow coating an ice rink on these roads!
Posted: Jan 28, 2010 1:16 pm

I'm rethinking the Costco trip. Outdated falafel mix and egg noodles for dinner tonight! Wet Death!
Posted: Jan 28, 2010 2:32 pm

Im glad I have plenty of weed, vodka(although I prefer whiskey) and meat products to aid me in this forthcoming white death...
Posted: Jan 28, 2010 3:01 pm

I went and bought a Boston butt at the ghetto Kroger this morning. I got it for $8.96, but it rung up wrong at the register and the manager gave me that price AND a $5 gift card for my "trouble"!
I plan to cook it most of the day tomorrow. Ice, snow, and BBQ smelling up the house all day. YES!
Posted: Jan 28, 2010 3:49 pm

whoa on the white death. my friend Justin dropped off a birthday bottle of eagle rare single barrel bourbon. my mama mailed me cookies, and I just got a bunch of new fabric and netflix rentals. as long as the power stays on (fingers and toes crossed) I'm set for the weekend.
Posted: Jan 28, 2010 4:31 pm

Well, andria, you can sew and drink and eat cookies with no power. Three out of four ain't bad!

I'm pretty nervous...that huge river oak right outside my back door (seriously, ten feet) dropped a big limb earlier this week. I hope it doesn't fall on my house with all that ice!

Take that, Jack Stands...

... MAJOR WINTER STORM EXPECTED ACROSS THE MIDSOUTH LATE TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT...

.ARCTIC AIR WILL CONTINUE TO PUSH INTO THE MIDSOUTH FROM THE NORTH TONIGHT AND FRIDAY WITH TEMPERATURES DROPPING TO BELOW FREEZING. MEANWHILE... LOW PRESSURE WILL TRACK TO THE SOUTH OF THE AREA SPREADING PRECIPITATION INTO THE MIDSOUTH BY LATE TONIGHT AND FRIDAY. A PROGRESSIVELY SOUTHWARD CHANGEOVER FROM RAIN TO FREEZING RAIN... SLEET AND SNOW WILL OCCUR FROM LATE TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT.

NORTHEAST WINDS OF 15 TO 20 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 30 MPH WILL LIKELY ACCOMPANY THE WINTRY PRECIPITATION. THESE WINDS COULD STRESS ICY TREE BRANCHES AND POWER LINES CAUSING POWER OUTAGES. WIND CHILLS WILL DROP INTO THE TEENS BY FRIDAY MORNING OVER PARTS OF THE AREA.

TEMPERATURES WILL REMAIN BELOW FREEZING OVER MUCH OF THE AREA THROUGH THE WEEKEND. AS A RESULT... A PROLONGED PERIOD OF SNOW AND ICE COVERED ROADS MAY OCCUR. TEMPERATURES MAY DROP INTO THE SINGLE DIGITS ACROSS THE NORTHERN HALF OF THE MIDSOUTH SUNDAY MORNING.

Posted: Jan 28, 2010 11:02 pm

It's only dropped 2 degrees in the last 4 hours, and I'm watching from my weather station in the garage. Cloud cover will keep the city warm over night. Super-cold front is still in MO and stalling.
Go to bed, kids. You have school tomorrow.
Posted: Jan 28, 2010 11:14 pm

(actually, the cold air is in the bootheel of MO, a line from Mountain Home, AR to Dyersberg, TN, and yeah it's moving south and will probably be here in about 3 hours; outside garage temp is swaying between 35 and 36, but still dropping. good signs)

BUT IT STILL AIN'T GOING TO DO SHIT.

New forecast from the National Weather Service, now with ThunderSnow!:

FRIDAY: The freezing rain and snow could be heavy at times. Some thunder is also possible. High near 31. Blustery, with a east northeast wind between 15 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New ice accumulation of 0.4 to 0.6 of an inch possible. New snow and sleet accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.
Posted: Jan 28, 2010 11:55 pm

I'm gonna go with Jack. He seems to have a knack for this. I've bought no extra provisions.
Posted: Jan 28, 2010 11:59 pm

New snow and sleet accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

What they mean is, 3-5 inches of children's tears when they find out schools are still open tomorrow morning.

I've only seen/heard "Thunder snow" once in my life, driving through WY.
Would be neat.

It is 33 degrees, and the WARNING has begun.
Get ready for some rain!

Cole, stay away from this. This is voodoo, and we're NOT going to make this happen.

If we are getting 7" of snow, better start snowing again right about now. I'd saw there's maybe 1" out here (White Station & Park).
Posted: Jan 29, 2010 12:02 pm

Yeah, I've revised my snow prediction. Doesn't look like anymore is going to fall until after midnight tonight. Looks like a full day of freezing rain, though. Oh boy.
Posted: Jan 29, 2010 12:20 pm

Big tree branch just fell in my front yard. I am hearing what sounds like gunshots but it's really tree limbs snapping. Bad deja vu of 1994 ice storm when we had no electricity for 6 days.

Midnight Thundersnow

That fool sulipek said we were getting another 1/4 inch.
Tried to walk the evil dog again,

Hot cocoa and "Are you being served" instead.

No, but I went to the fairgrounds and did a few by myself. It's still not total ice for ICE DANGER FUN, but tomorrow night it may be fantastic.
