Goner Message Board / Memphis / Cool Stuff to do?
Posted: Sep 22, 2003 4:50 pm
Well, it's lookin like I'm not gonna make it down for the Halloween show, but I'm gonna be comin' down at the end of Feb for 4 days. I think it's Feb 27th - March 1st. Anyways, my girlfriend is gonna be in town down there on those dates with the production of the "Sound Of Music". She's an on-set teacher for the kids in the musical. So, I guess we're gonna be stayin' in some hotel near the Peabody. I have no idea where the hell the Peabody is at or anything cool surrounding it. Help a fellow Goner out with some cool shit to do. Or go out for drinks while I'm down there or set up a show! That would be a good way to relax. How 'bout the Dutchmasters and we can get the Persuaders up?? Yeah, that would cool. So there's my situation, now who can help?

The Peabody's downtown. Not much goin' on outside the tourist shit. If you've never been to Beale St. you ought to see it. That will take about 5 minutes. Then there's Graceland/Sun/Stax. The rest of your time should be spent in mid-town(no too far away from downtown) drinking heavily. It's too far in advance to know what shows will be happening, but I'm sure there will be something going on.

Ya see, I've done all that touristy stuff, but the girl hasn't. So, I'm sure we'll do the whole 5 minute Sun tour, then spend the money on Graceland as well. But we'll have access to a vehicle so where midtown is a good dive or all the fun spots? I mean, I saw the list on the Memphis part of the GOner site, but I'm wantin' to know where the real action is. Drop me a line if ya think of anywhere that is a don't miss! I plan on the record stores...

I'm always amazed that people ask this question even when they know Eric has taken the time to put up a whole part of his web site for free dedicated to the "real stuff" 2 clicks from this bulletin board!

Not many sites for any city has that much shit listed on it to do...

Don't sweat it! We're used to rude new yorkers around here.

smartass! HAHAHHA!!! Wow. You and Louie both have refered to me as a new yorker. I'm not used to that. I've always been called a hoosier. I've been here for a year so I guess I am one! anyways, sherman, I hope there isn't any bad blood...

Ha! Ha! Speaking of rude newyorkers...one of the funniest things that Andria ever did at the store:
When the Coen Bros. were scouting locations for O Brother, they came to the store to do a little shopping. Unfortunately for them, they came a few minutes early or while Andria was still getting some coffee or something. They banged on the door to get her to open up. She opened the door and told them they'd have to wait on the porch til we were open. Being New Yorkers, they loved the treatment--must have made them feel riht back in the Big City! No preferred service for these Hollywood types around Memphis! Anyway, when they finished shopping & paid for their records with a credit card, Andria was really embarrassed when she saw the name on the card! Classic!

they bought a buncha stax cds -- the mgs, carla thomas, etc. actually when i read ethan coen on the card i was amazed and asked em if they were here bc the orpheum was showing raising arizona in their summer fim series. of course they were down scouting for the next film. i DID send em to miss ellen's though...
the best was a year afterwards when beifuss interviewed em for the commercial appeal when o!brother came out -- they said "hi to our lil friend at shangri-la."

Speakin' of Stax, I just went. I know I mentioned it kinda offhandedly earlier, but I didn't know what I was missin'. It's a self-guided tour with more shit than you could imagine. Set aside a whole day!
