Goner Message Board / Memphis / ATTN: Restaurant Workers...COGIC talking about relocating their convocation!
Posted: Apr 14, 2009 5:01 pm

Being reported on Channel 3 now.

Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out!

"I think we should move at least one year just to teach Memphis a lesson."

Let dem peoples go

I think they're outta here! is Memphis still where their HQ is?

I cracked up watching the pastor complain about how memphis restaurants didn't treat COGIC right on the 10 o' clock news. and what was that story about the wrigley's gum pack in the police car? I was reading and only halfway watching. apparently, that story was a separate issue from the cops who got busted for soliciting prostitutes WHILE THEY WERE ON THE JOB (the cops, that is).

in other news, I ran into AC Wharton at dinner. tres dapper in a pastel suit!

and memphis' service industry breathes a collective sigh of relief....

How weren't they "treated right"? They didn't get free food? Now St. Louis will suffer--have fun up there! Memphis, I believe, remains their "spiritual home".

One of these cops says he isn't resigning because he "wasn't on the job when he solicited the prostitute."

good for him.

I would love to have been a fly on the wall when the cop refused to quit with that excuse. Thing is, he'll likely keep his job for quite awhile because he'll have to be convicted before they can fire him. He'll get desk duty.

Looks like it is a done deal. I know several people who are high fiving right now because of this decision.

As an aside, I had a friend who worked at the front desk of the Holiday Inn at poplar and 240 several years ago. She would tell me horror stories about bounced checks, rooms being trashed, temper tantrums and completely outlandish behavior during this gathering of "saints". Good riddance.

don't let the door hit you on the way out...think you're gonna get a better "deal" in St. Louis? good luck with that.

if anyone's going to "learn a lesson" out of all this, it's going be to COGIC.

the CVB needs to start TODAY on recruiting an industry convention to replace them...the medical field or something that actually has money to spend, and won't bitch about a hotel rate when they're cramming 8 people in a double room.

book them the same week as the COGIC event, and when they realize St. Louis is more expensive, they won't be able to come back to Memphis on their terms.

Hallelujah, SAINTS!!!

A comment left on the WREG website:

"I must say I'm excited ova da move. Now other cities can meet COGIC they see how nasty & rude a bunch of saints can be. When I was 16 I was a janitor for the convocation. Poop all over the toilet & walls and then they stick they nose up at you as if you stink. I pray for them

TOYA @ 3:09 PM CDT, Apr 15, 2009"

Oh it will be a trip. The Lou must be doing awful bad to beg that bunch of lordly trash to come crap on their city.

I love the idea of hooking in an actual convention of people with $$$. Kevin Kane pisses me off with his crying over this. What does he actually do anyway to earn a paycheck?
Posted: Apr 15, 2009 6:45 pm

Kevin Kane is a dick.

I had a friend who worked at The Peabody's front desk. He often had COGIC women complain about the room closet, saying the shelves weren't big enough for their hats.

when i was working downtown..heard of a dozen people getting kicked out of a room that was a double...when entering the room they smelled smoke..the family had a litte barbq pit in the bathtub...i also concur Kevin Kane is a fucking douchebag.

working the front desk at a hotel during that shit was a nightmare and a half. i did it twice and that's exactly why i quit working at hotels. fucking cogic. damn jerks. good riddance. cuz no matter how nice you are to them, they tend to be nasty and mean anyway.
Posted: Apr 18, 2009 2:56 pm

And Kane said the CVB did much, including footing the bill for COGIC's use of the convention center, shuttling visitors to and from hotels, working out hotel discounts and even printing welcome banners.

What? Free use of the convention center etc etc etc? Please, Kane, don't debase Memphis by catering anymore to idiots like this. They'll get theirs when St. Louis doesn't offer free motorized cart services for their hats to get from room to room in their convention center.

What makes me so fucking furious about COGIC is that THEY OWN A HOTEL. The Chisca may have never been fancy, but it's got some good early-rock history attached to it and it's fucking huge and it's fucking downtown. They could renovate it and give their convention people the rate! Or lease it to someone else with a guaranteed block of rooms!

Of course, they could have easily gotten the money to do the renovation in the '90s. Now they probably couldn't close that deal. They just piss me off.

They are a fraud--a confused, mindlessly peacock strutting, ignorant fraud. I wish one of the leaders would get a Joseph Smith-esque vision to relocate their spiritual home away from here--Memphis is better without any connection to these bozos.

Oh my huge hat collection.

How did THAT sneak up? I thought they were on to St. Louis?

"'This is our Mecca and in the Scripture, people always return to Jerusalem,' said Rev. Brandon Porter of Greater Community Temple (COGIC) in Hickory Hill."

This mixture of metaphors confuses me... Does he think "Mecca" is Jerusalem?

"Bishop Blake once said, 'Memphis is Mama's house. It might be cramped, it might be small, but around the holidays everyone wants to go to Mama's house.'"

This may be an answer to your question, but I'm not sure. Either way, it further mixes the metaphors.
Posted: Nov 2, 2009 3:43 pm

OK, those two quotes are telling me I need to read the article...hilarious. Do you think they are that rude and nasty at their Mama's house? She better whip their asses good, if so!
Posted: Nov 2, 2009 4:12 pm

I bet they don't tip there either.
Posted: Nov 3, 2009 5:47 pm

Say what you will about their tipping habit stereotype, but I always have a great time when they come to town. The running, dancing, screaming, tongue talkin, big hats... great stuff. I'll miss it.

I waitressed on Beale Street during a COGIC convention once about ten years ago, and spent the whole weekend busting my ass and making no money. One of my last tables o' saints cleared out and from across the room I could see what I thought was a $20 bill on the table. I got so excited and ran over and picked it up; it made my night. But then I was totally shattered to see it was a fake $20 with Jesus's face superimposed over Andrew Jackson's and there was a bunch of shit written on the back about how I don't need money, only Jesus. I almost cried.

I would have run out after those assholes and ripped one of those hats off their heads and sold that shit. Warn anyone you know working in the service industry in St. Louis NOW!

It kills me that Memphis is so hard up that they want to pay these crooks to consider coming back.

COGIC doesn't really seem like Beale street tourist material

They all go down to the casinos and pretend not to see each other

Thank Satan I didn't work for tips when I did banquet bartending at the Peabody in college. I suffered through two years of COGIC, but it did not affect my money. Since they prefer to drink in the privacy of their hotel room, all the bartenders ended up running food and clearing plates during all their fucntions. I did have one ancient old bitty grab my hand as i was clearing her completely empty plate and scolded me for not ASKING her if she was ready for it to be cleared. I just moved on sort of pretending not to hear her, and then when she wasn't looking I snatched the plate while staring down one of her table-mates who was watching me.

it was kind of an ideal situation to be in as far as COGIC goes, since their (heavily negotiated, i'm sure) server's percentage was automatically added to the bill.
