Bellsouth building being demolished
A little surprised that the whole office building was condemned...but it should be fun to watch it come down on Friday

Right next to the P&H -wish they gave a time other than \"morning\"

Any idea what time the demolition happens on Friday? Watchin the old Baptist demolition was awesome at 5:30 in the morning with a bottle of champagne.

“The way I’m going to do it is cut the legs out from underneath it and let it come on down to the ground,” he said.

Madison Avenue will be closed briefly until “the dust settles,” he said.

What a GREAT job!

i left my car there the night before - pretty hungover the next day while i was walking back to P&H - i didnt pay attention to people, cameras, and orange cones, someone yelled at me then the building blew up - i was covered in building dust - still coughing up dry wall

So, what they are doing is removing sections of piers that the building basically "stands" on. All but the outer corner pier. A guy on a caterpillar tractor pulls up to the last pier and starts ramming it till it starts to give and then backs away as fast as he can.

The first section almost came down on top of him.

I will be surprised if an ambulance is not called to the work site before completed.

Looks like shades of the Murrow building right now.

More to come down tomorrow.

VIDEO! I NEED VIDEO!!!!

that cannot be the right way to bring down a building.

New candidate for most dangerous job! Or World's stupidest stunts.

Why not use explosives?
Posted: Feb 17, 2009 9:58 am

or a long ramming pole to keep dude away from the building, at least!
Posted: Feb 17, 2009 10:00 am

I happen to have such a pole.

sounds like a job for a wrecking ball

unfortunate they didnt demolish that minglewood hall thing accross the street
Posted: Feb 18, 2009 6:40 pm

I was over there yesterday, and they had one of these things (only with a jackhammer on the end instead of a bucket) all the way under the building knocking down the columns on the collapsed side. Insane!

Apparently they are taking it down a little at a time to keep it from collapsing on the underground parking garage underneath it. The weight of the entire thing coming down at once would surely cave the garage in.
Posted: Feb 18, 2009 11:40 pm

they are gouging into the garage below and letting the rubble fill up the hole.

then they truck it off.

gotta be the cheapest way to do it, I'm guessing.

it just doesn't appear to be a real safe operation. I sure as hell wouldn't want the job. And I LOVE tearin' shit up!

Looks REAL cool! kinda like cement Kudzu!

haven't gone and peered into the abyss... I LOVE RUBBLE!
