I just talked with Betty, Othar's daughter who is at the hospital with him. He's currently in Baptist Hospital in Southaven MS, but should be home on Monday. They think he has pneumonia -- he was walking with a cane and coughing bad when I saw him last week. He also broke a few ribs coughing.
You can send any donations -- and get well cards -- to Othar's daughter Bobbie Turner, 3339 Gravel Springs Rd, Senatobia MS 38668. Othar doesn't have a bank account, so make checks out to Bobbie. Early next week there will be a Memphis-area bank where folks can make donations in person. I will pass that info along when I get it.
OTHAR IS NO LONGER AT THE SENATOBIA HOSPITAL, SO PLEASE DON'T SEND CARDS THERE IF YOU GOT THAT ADDRESS. SEND THEM TO HIM C/O BOBBIE.
You can also send donations to the Sonny Boy Blues Society's wonderful Blues Aid program and they will get you a tax donation. address: P>O> Box 237, Helena AR 72342 But please put Othar's name on the check, or the $ will just go into their general fund.
Please keep Othar and Bernice and all the Turners in their prayers, and please pass this info along.
Additional info from Daniel "Slick" Ballinger and his mother:
In the last six months, the Turner family has experienced a tremendous amount of tragedy. They've also incurred substantial debt. In addition to Mr. Othar's current health problems and mounting medical expenses...
They've had to deal with....Chip's death....Mr. Othar's 16 yr. old granddaughter, Kanosha drowning....Bernice is losing her battle with cancer and has been given less than two months to live...Miss Betty has had to terminate her job to provide around the clock care for her. Needless to say, the financial burden has been enormous.
Without a doubt, I can honestly say that Othar Turner is the greatest man that I've ever met! I feel deeply indebted to him and his family, for the kindness and valuable lessons that they have imparted to Daniel. The knowledge that he absorbed about life, and music will be with him always.
Daniel and I love these people like our family, so we're trying to explore every avenue in the hopes that we can make their life a little easier.
