Back up and running as of last Friday (11/7), in a temp location...

2497 Elvis Presley, across the street from the Amvets.

Took the Mrs. Weirdo there today. Food's as good as always.

I hope Sherman survived the drought.

according to newspaper blog, they're going back to south parkway in a different location.

perhaps Gangsta Blac's old joint?
Posted: Nov 21, 2008 2:33 pm

no, blog wrong about location but right about the chickens! they have a cool old garage on ep blvd they are fixing up (have been for over a year), just up from where they are now (2497 ep blvd). they will move into new, bigger locale in May, if the world doesn't end before then.

Welp, maybe next weekend cos we discovered Luchessi's Deli today. East Memphis Soul Food....Onion Souffle on crostini???? Bizarre panini combos? Potato Soup as thick as good mashed potatoes? Delish.

East Memphis yes. Soul food no...comon now!
Posted: Nov 22, 2008 8:58 pm

"East Memphis Soul Food" meaning exactly what that says--shit like Onion Souffle, Hawaiian Spinach Dip, etc etc. Think more "Grandmom's Condo" and less "What My Grandmom's Maid Eats at Home".

"What My Grandmom's Maid Eats at Home"
damn.
Posted: Nov 23, 2008 10:00 am

what IS hawaiian spinach dip?
Posted: Nov 23, 2008 10:53 am

Just speaking the realness of this part of town; hell, WE ARE IN MEMPHIS. If you go to the Easy Way on Mendenhall or Schnucks on Perkins around 1PM on a weekday, you will see plenty of black women escorting older white women and men. And it isn't just because they enjoy each others company, even though maybe they do.

How is that some harsh acknowledgement? I still get the feeling people around here cannot truly appreciate how segregated this place is. Whatever. I'm grouchy.

TP--Hawaiian Spinach Dip is that sour cream/mayo/frozen spinach/water chestnuts dip scooped into the hollowed out King's Hawaiian Bread Bowl. C'mon!

Call it "Yankee sensitivity."

Where is it located?
Posted: Dec 3, 2008 1:50 pm

I went to Luchessi's a week or so ago and thought it sucked. I got a meatball hoagie and it was served barely warm on a panini style bun so all the meatballs fell out. I also had some of the potato soup that was cold as shit, needed salt and was almost too thick. I did get some tamales to take home and eat later and they were fine, but Im pretty sure they dont even make those. They just divide them up, pour chili on the top and sprinkle cheese and then charge like $7 for three of them. Dissapointed, totally not worth the drive and located in the most annoying shopping center in east Memphis!

Ryan's meatball hoagie was good, at least the first time he got it. I reheated the potato soup and I liked it thick and added my own salt. I got mushroom raviolis that were delicious one night and another night pretty blah. The onion souffle is hilarious and addictive as hell. Their tomato soup the other night was above average. It ain't fine cuisine but for the "three block drive", it isn't bad in THE LEAST. It still beats the shit outta Cafe Eclectic (ha!)--though I had a fantastic mocha from there the other day.

If you like tamales and you can't hang with the east memphis scene, there is a tamale man at Park and Semmes and he is definitely "authentic".

I think I know what that is. But you gotta know what happens around you here.

Anyways, Hemant, it is in that shopping center from hell (Colin is only sorta right, there are much worse ones here, but that one's pretty gross) at Mendenhall and Sanderlin, on the Sanderlin side facing Interim (which is across the street). Do not expect something crazy outlandishly great, but I was not let down by my half a sandwich and soup and the wacky onion souffle dip!

What I'd really like right now is some Hephzibah wings. Dunlap got some and they were really good...none of that slathery sauce all over em, just spicy rub.
Posted: Dec 3, 2008 8:59 pm

I tried to get the work folks to try Hephzibah's for lunch last week - first reply was "I'm not eating at a place I can't pronounce."
Fuckers.
Try Mantia's for some interesting options - it's behind the Spirits Shoppe at St. Nick and Poplar.

Where are all the cunts going to eat now?

Seriously, that place was like an airport... For cunts.
Posted: Dec 3, 2008 10:31 pm

But the food was pretty good and they had weird I-talian soft drinks.
Posted: Dec 4, 2008 3:56 pm

The Davis-Kidd Cafe...what is the name of that shithole? Bronte's? That is where the cunts are, sire.
Posted: Dec 4, 2008 4:00 pm

Well...the semi-literate cunts maybe. It is a shithole no doubt and folks out "there" think its all fancy and shit. Mantias was always full of tennis skirt wearin, gigantic SUV drivin, loud ass cell phone talkin hos. I couldnt stand that place man. Not a bad sandwich but way too small and fuck trying to park.
