Posted: Oct 31, 2002 8:30 pm
Eric O./Goner

just wanted to say thanks for the heads up on Gus's. ate there a couple weeks ago on our way outta memphis...mmm mmm, tasty. some of the best fried chicken i've ever had.

another culinary highlight of our trip was a place called "Cock of the Walk" in Natchez, MS. the cajun catfish was insanely good. if ever in those parts check it out.

yeah, gus' is okay... kinda feel guilty 'cause it's so easy now... used to be a 45 minute drive, then 45 minute wait.. and worth it. since gus' has opened their downtown location, i haven't been back out to mason, tn.

it's great the next day, too... if you're coming through town and need snackage for the road the next day. order too much and eat it later.

the sides suck... canned beans and canned slaw. i'd say substitute fries for the in-house eating or go without to take on the road.

shit yeah. i was driving through algiers last week and passed one of those (coincidentally that location is home to the employee of the month). they're window advertised a 75pc box.

but now i see they have introduced the "big box" to be used for 100 pc orders.

Has anyone actually eaten at chicken box? Is the chicken better than church's? because even though church's is cheap, I don't even think it's worth $5 for 8 pieces, it just doesn't taste good. Popeye's is so much better.

scarfed down a box 'o the box at the saint one night... for cheap chicken, i'd say it's not bad. better than church's, to me at least, but in the same kinda league.

it's no popeye's. but add enough louisiana hot sauce and beer, maybe it works out.

I moved to Nashville last year, seemed like a good idea until I got hungry. Started driving around, and, no fucking Popeye's. Then it got worse when I wanted a po-boy... then came bbq. Up till now I've only known 3 towns, New Orleans, Jackson, and Memphis... so yeah, this came as quite a shock. Nashville does have a Cock-of-the-Walk though, which thoroughly rocks, but pricey. There is one in Jackson MS too. I need to move back before I lose anymore weight.

The best catfish in the world is at Taylor Grocery in Taylor, MS. It's open from 5:00 to 9:00 Thurs. thru Sun., and it's worth the hour and a half drive from Memphis. Don't go on an Ole Miss home football game weekend.

...And the only good place to eat in Nashville is the Hermitage Cafe.

does anybody know anything about the catfish hotel? my pops was going on about it the other day. it's somewhere right on the TN/MS line - in very close proximity the buford pusser museum.

just the idea of a place called the catfish hotel (not to mention a bufurd pusser museum) has me contemplating a road trip.
