(from Memphis' Commercial Appeal)

Several cooking events will be in the spotlight Sept. 13-15 at Goat Days International, a family festival at USA Stadium in Millington.

Contests in goat barbecue, cabrito (goat meat), Dutch oven cookery and ice cream making are part of the event.

Goat barbecue judging starts at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 14. The entry fee is $75. The winner takes home $750.

Competitors in the Cabrito Challenge get three pounds of goat meat (their choice of loin, ground meat or roast) for their $25 entry fee. They can prepare it in any way they want as long as it is cooked on site.

Adults and scouts, both boys and girls, will compete for top prizes in the Dutch oven cookery, $200 and $100 respectively. Entry fees are $10 for adults and $5 for scouts.

The entry fee for the ice cream making contest, which takes place a 1:30 p.m. Sept. 15, is $10. Top prize is $200.

The free festival includes a children's parade, children's rodeo, marbles and horseshoe competition, numerous goat competitions including a boer goat show, antique tractor pull, stock dog trials, fishing rodeo and more.

For more information on the event or to enter the cooking contests, call 872-4559.

Man, GOAT DAYS was fantastic... somehow the 30,000 people turned out to be more like 300... the goat chariot races pulling kids were a debacle, only one place served goat bbq, and we screwed up and turned down some free bbq from one of the groups competing in the goat bbq cook-off. Not enough goats, either. But what a blast- country families hanging out, talking goat. Drinking real lemonade. eating some pork cracklins. watching tractors pull tractors real, real slow.

plus the drive up Thomas has some great scenery, mostly low-down bars- including Harpo's and a Green Bay Packers bar in Packers colors- 28 and up only!
