Goner Message Board / Memphis / A & R Barbecue

After much celebration from some quarters, our Goner barbecue correspondent visits A & R Barbecue on Elvis Presley Blvd.

The Verdict: it's all right if you're en route to Graceland or the AmVets Thrift store and forgot to stop at either Payne's (Lamar or E.P. Blvd) or Big S (just up the street off McLemore). Tender pork, generous sandwich, crispy fries. I got hot and it wasn't, really. Sauce was sweet and more subtle, more of an Interstate/ Neely's style.

Lots of stuff on the menu to try including hotwings, hamburgers, smoke sausage, ribs, etc. big space to sit. They were doing steady take-out lunch business while i was there around 1 pm, so the locals like it.

other opinions welcome.

oh yeah, me and scott R hit the A&R monday and yes, the beans are fantastic. better than the barbecue, maybe? although the sandwich wasn't bad. get a large thing of the beans and you might be set- it's full of meat.

BBQ was good, but nothing to write home about. I don't think I'd go out of my way for it, but if was in the area I'd definately stop in.

I tried it Saturday & they were sublime sandwiches--way better than Payne's or interstate, but suit yourself and it'll be less of a wait for me. Beans still rule there.

There's another A & R Barbecue on Hickory Hill - in the Hickory Crossing (?) Plaza, snuggled in with the Chuck E. Cheese and the human hair wig shop. Mmmmm. Hair.

Gotta be the same folks.

I'll pop over when I finish huffing Dust Off! behind the abandoned Fred P. Gattas store. I'm a Hickory Hill Street Hustler!!!
