check out the memphis page on the goner site. restaurants & record stores.

dive hotels are either by-the-hour or just as expensive as non-dive hotels. they ain't as cheap as they should be, at least.

best show bet is Lost Sounds / American Death Ray Music at Young Ave Deli saturday night. should be fun.

Cheapest places that I've found to stay at
while visiting Memphis are the Red Roof Inn and the Villager Lodge (I think that's what it's called anyway). They are sort of across the street from each other and are down the street from Sun Studio. There are some hotel coupons in those free Memphis maps that might be worth checking into as well.

I just got back from a trip that involved memphis. If you drive by a TN visitor center on the highway, get one of those traveler coupon books, they have the best deals on hotel rooms. We stayed at the Best Western in West Memphis for $37, and I think it's usually like $70 because it's a brand new hotel. (if you really want a dive, stay at the kings court on union, you won't forget it anytime soon) The rest of the time we stayed at T.O. Fuller state park, which is damn nice - their showers are seriously better than any hotel I stayed in the whole trip, everything is real clean and it's $14 a night, you can't beat that (if you don't mind sleeping in a car/tent). Fuller Park is right by the Interstate BBQ, which has great fuckin ribs and supposedly the BBQ spaghetti is world famous. It's also near Yums, a sub/chinese food joint (on route 61), get a 12" cheeseburger sub with fries and a drink for $4.95 - you won't be let down.

As for night life, we couldn't find shit to do. One night we went to Peabody Place and saw the Royal Tenenbaums, that place should probably be avoided.
