Goner Message Board / Memphis / Kick-Ass Super-Cool Stuff Happening TONIGHT!

Uh, no. Not really. I just felt kinda sorry for the Memphis board and thought I'd lend it a hand. Now that I think about it, I just may mosey up there tonight and get my BBQ fix. If that doesn't qualify as "Kick-Ass, Super-Cool" I don't know what does.

got my payne's fix in yesterday... always very strong. no bs with sides- you can grab some chips or a bean pie, and occasionally get beans. it's all about the barbecue.

I'm forever greatful for this section of this page that lists places to eat. We tried Cozy Corner, and Paynes both good, each had their own thing going on. After living in memphis for a while do you go for the sandwiches more? How often do you take on a rack of ribs? These are important things.

sandwiches can be hit during the week, no problem. fried chicken and ribs are more a special occasion, at least for me... so it's usually a friday or saturday thing. cozy corner closes early so friday lunch is a prime opportunity to hit it.

the trek out to gus' fried chicken is an awesome way to spend a weekend afternoon- if you get there before they run out of chicken! and i've only been to stein's once, but they could be surpassing Ellen's as my in-town chicken of choice.

of course, the BIG S is a great way to start your weekend day, too... barbecue and cheeseburger (to kill the bbq burn) and a quart... they don't have ribs that often, but they're worth trying if they do, too.

and yes, these are important things!

oh yeah, the season just ended, but the corndogs at the west memphis, AR 1/4 mile dirt track auto speedway were fantastic- folks were eating 'em as fast as they could make 'em, so they were fresh and hot as hell. some great races, too. not to mention the mullets.

Bad news about cozy corner shutdown at 5:00 pm every night. Who starts thinking bout eating then? Gus's franchise moving to S. Front street...let's hope it's better than the Dyer's franchise on Beale St. Although I must say, the best cross-cultural experience in Memphis these days is the Vietnamese run Dyer's on Cleveland. Go figure

for me the steins and ellens tricks are pretty different. steins chicken was suprisingly tast-E for cafeteria style walk thru line but still didn't pack the punch ellen's does. sides/atmosphere were fine and food was fast - so thats a big plus - cuz the wait at ellen's is always long. obviously neither touches the power, frustration, and wonder of a trip to gus's though. i hope it works downtown, too. forgot about that, there for a minute.

vietnamese dyer's is crazy - good burgers though. haven't messed with the egg rolls or tried mixing flavors quite yet. woo!

Whoa, whoa, whoa!! Gus's is opening a franchise on front street? Hehe ... I'm a drooling fool already!

For that matter, if anyone knows ANYWHERE good to eat in Nashville, please post. Even the fast food there sucks big donkey dicks.

I've found a few good places to eat. Rotiers on Elliston Place is a pretty cool old diner. Great french bread cheesburger and roast beef sandwich. They also have a pretty good plate lunch. The thing I notice about Nashville in general is they don't understand spicey food here. You can add your own salt & pepper at the table but forget about the heat.
