sweet jesus it's insane out there
Posted: Aug 5, 2007 9:18 pm

Not to play with your pain, but it is brutal down here too. I couldn't even take 30 minutes at the beach this AM. Not humid, just like an oven.

went around and ran around chasing a soccer ball for an hour and a half from noon until 1:30. this is supposed to be good for me, right?

It's so hot here you wouldn't even want to go outside to go to the beach if we had one!
Posted: Aug 6, 2007 8:58 pm

The heat was only part of it; too many damn kids/families/people. We went ot a new beach; it was great waterwise, but I despise a crowded beach with people eating and littering and looking really ugly...then brutal heat on top of it? Ugh.

How is it today?

Like the 6th circle of hell, and I hear Wednesday/Thursday is going to be worse.

.................................................I feel like killin' sumthin'.
Posted: Aug 6, 2007 11:48 pm

You know, my elderly neighbor (before he got carted off to the home) used to shoot squirrels during the hot spells. I live in the hood, but we all have park like backyards with lots of vermints. Anyway, he'd shoot em, and then nail their tails to his outside garage wall.

You might want to consider that.
Posted: Aug 6, 2007 11:50 pm

vermints = varmints and vermin

I just made up a great new word!

I win! Does this mean I can collect my free box of banana popsicles? Oh wait, someone will have to bring them to me, as I am not going outside to get them! I am gloating, because I had my car A/C fixed last week. Today I drove down to Helena for the day, and it was just great all the way.

Are you seeing wavy lines over the streets? I heard on the national news that the streets are starting to buckle there...true?

There was some brutal heat wave in the 70's when I had to actually leave Memphis for a good month and go to the river house in Arkansas because the fire dept went on strike at the same time and shit was keerazy.

I've already started!
I have never seen anything like this. It's worse than 1980...when the heat wave lasted for ten days of 100+. This is the seventh day of 100+, but with hotter days than 1980. The temperature hasn't been below 95 since the beginning of August.

I've gained at least five pounds. All you can do is sit in the house in your underwear and eat. Ugh. I really, really, really hate hot weather...but this is just insanity.
Posted: Aug 15, 2007 10:01 pm

It was actually hotter the summer of 2000. 10 days of +100. It didn't break the 108 record, but it was overall, hotter.
Have fun:

Yeah, but humidity is supposed to amp up, leaving the heat index between 105 and 110. It'll probably actually feel worse. But, I mean, "worse" can only be used in the broadest of terms about this shit!

I will continue to look for any reasonable positives to this situation.

I've been wondering if summer's this extreme, will winter be the same way? I can't take the freezing cold!

I've been wondering if summer's this extreme, will winter be the same way? I can't take the freezing cold!

after braving many more midwest winters than i have southern summers, i will say that the day we get 3 feet of snow down here is the day i might have to move away from this town.

i can deal with the winters here and if it is only maybe a foot of snow for 2 days, i can deal. give me 3 months full of that shit, and i'm taking a one way flight to cuba.
Posted: Aug 17, 2007 3:36 am

This miserable heatwave is making me way more depressed than the coldest wettest winter ever did.
Posted: Aug 17, 2007 5:53 pm

My ferry ride to work here in WA is about 52 degrees with a stiff breeze. Had to wear a jacket every day this August.

Hats off to Memphis, heaven knows I couldn't hack those summers anymore.
Posted: Aug 17, 2007 5:55 pm

i just stay indoors. fuck going outside if you don't have to. i'm *so* glad my new car has a/c and my house has central air. otherwise i'd be up shit creek.
Posted: Aug 17, 2007 6:19 pm

Has it "broke" yet? I guess 99 is not that much different than 105. Feel for ya. I read in the paper today it was 110 in Mountain Home, AR! WHAT?!?!?!
Posted: Aug 17, 2007 7:59 pm

it's still hot. it's supposed to rain tonight, so maybe that'll help it, but it's only supposed to take the high down 3 degrees for tomorrow, so that's not much. i wish it would cool down a lot more than that. the rain will probably only make it to be more like a sauna.
Posted: Aug 17, 2007 8:45 pm

We've been hornswaggled. Forecast today was 99. Now moved to 102. It's now 100.
Posted: Aug 17, 2007 8:53 pm

"We do not know the origin of hornswoggle. We do know that it belongs to a group of "fancified" words that were particularly popular in the American West in the 19th century. Hornswoggle is one of the earliest, first appearing around 1829. It is possible that these words were invented to poke fun at the more "sophisticated" East. Some other words of this ilk are absquatulate, also first appearing in the 1820s, skedaddle, first attested in 1861 in Missouri, and discombobulate, first recorded in 1916."
