Goner Message Board / Memphis / I want to rock!
Posted: Feb 21, 2007 3:51 pm

I used to be in bands. I really want to start a new one or join an existing group, but I have many strikes against me:

I play guitar.

I don't have a place to rehearse or a PA.

I have steady job that prevents me from doing much during the week.

I have zero musical contacts in Memphis.

Although I'm pretty easy to get along with in general, I can be real passive-aggressive asshole when it comes to writing and rehearsing with others.

I have boring and predictable influences like Guided By Voices and My Bloody Valentine.

I'm too old to put up with a lot of the shit that goes with being in a band.

I'm also too old to answer most ads for other people starting bands. I don't "get" their music. I don't have any tattoos or piercings. I wear guys' pants.

If you need further proof I'm too old; I wear earplugs at rock shows.

What should I do? Give up? Learn to play bass? Join a cover band? Shave my head and check into rehab?

Actually, there's all kinds of stuff you could do, and tons of folks to play with in town; lots of 8-5er's, too. Trick is finding a drummer, I think.

doh

So I should learn to play the drums. But then won't I be the subject of numerous jokes which will end up hurting my feelings? Do they make earplugs for the ego?
Posted: Feb 21, 2007 4:37 pm

Rockers don't have feelings.
Posted: Feb 21, 2007 4:39 pm

What about Indie Rockers? Or is that an oxymoron?
Posted: Feb 21, 2007 4:40 pm

I think that's why they call it "emo". You know, for "emotional hair and feelings".

I'm a drummer, but I've got many of the same handicaps -

I don't have a place to rehearse or a PA.

I have steady job that prevents me from doing much during the week.

I have zero musical contacts in Memphis.

I have zero interest in being in a cover band.

I think guitar players need an egoectomy before they subject themselves to the shame of drumming.

But if the handicaps can be overcome, I'm interested.
Any of y'all know a reasonable place to get loud?

I'm a bass player, sort of.

I also don't have a PA, but might could do something about rehearsal space, at least sometimes.

I have a job with a continuously random schedule.

My musical resume doesn't tend to make people want to be in a band with me. Includes songs about Tacos, Blowjobs, Powerwalking and a string of offensive songs about Jesus.

My musical influences are simplistic: Ramones, Jawbreaker, novelty music.

My car's a piece of shit with a slipping transmission so I might have to bum rides to rehearsal.

Since about 1993, I haven't been able to keep a band together for more than 3 months.

I'm antisocial so I hardly ever go anywhere that I could meet people to start a band with. I'm also too old and crotchity to answer any ads.

I think we need to do a musician's speed-dating event.

Anybody who wants to join/start a new band should gather somewhere for drinks and schmoozing.

There is nothing else worth writing a song about.

"Jesus Was a Boob Man" and the entire score to the film "Powerwalk" are amazing.

Actually, that's not a bad idea. How about Thursday at 9:00 at the Buccaneer, tables near the fireplace? It's before Buck and the Hookup, but early enough for 9-5ers.

Sounds good to me. That gives me plenty of time to get there after I watch the Idol results show (oh shit, that's another indication I have no business rocking.)

This needs to be revived.
Posted: Aug 20, 2007 2:45 pm

Consider it revived.

I'm meeting with someone this week to see if we want to work together on a new band. If all goes well I'm sure we'll be in the market for drums and what not.

More as the story develops.

I've got a sweet set of Ludwig Vistalite's that I haven't played yet...

Sure would be fun to get back behind the wheel again.

Nah, I'm WAY too much of an asshole.

But I do own a pub.

Hmmm...

Having a Ric 4001 is a surefire way into any band I form, regardless of talent or personal hygiene.

(I make no inference about anyone's musical skill or cleanliness. Just glad to hear you got your Ric back)
