Posted: Aug 1, 2006 3:42 am

wtf? i know, i'm a freak about it. who cares. just tell me if it's all fucked for you too.. .
Posted: Aug 1, 2006 4:14 am

it is...and has been for awhile... whats happenned? does somebody keep hackin' it or are there just way too many people on it? is this the universe's way of saying we should go out more?

it wasn't my biggest thing, but damn it cuts down on some serious voyeurism...

its not even worth the struggle to get on, you know?
Posted: Aug 1, 2006 4:32 am

i know. and what's more disappointing is that when you do finally log on, you find out your friends feel the same 'cause you aint gotta damn message from anyone. . . that is, IF you are able to log in. wtf?
Posted: Aug 1, 2006 4:44 am

indeed...
Posted: Aug 1, 2006 6:24 am

i keep getting messages from my friends that tell me to look at hot girls' pictures or that i will win an ipod nano.

obviously, it's a bad idea to click on their stupid links. duh.

but most people just don't get it cuz they wanna win an ipod or see nekkid ladies. i'm drunk andi know better. duh.

this too will pass... when google does their myspace clone that actually works, and maybe doesn't try to own everything that comes through their www... goodbye clunky junky myspace. yep.
Posted: Aug 1, 2006 7:37 am

disagree with above post. google earth yes. google myspace probably not. they only seem to do things better that haven't been done before.
Posted: Aug 1, 2006 2:24 pm

my geography knowledge has improved greatly since spending hours on google earth. (finally for mac users) maps are a comfort.
Posted: Aug 1, 2006 3:44 pm

prob right. but myspace is like 5 years behind the times in terms of layout, clutter, and functionality.

goner is at least 10 years behind the times, so screw 'em.

Does Friendster work anymore?

I joined both at the same time and always hated MySpace cos of the sleaze factor and ugly layout. Then everyone started hopping more on the MySpace train and I had to leave Friendster alone.

they only seem to do things better that haven't been done before.

What about Gmail? I like it a lot better than the advertising filled garbage of yahoo and the others.
Posted: Aug 1, 2006 3:57 pm

I love gmail.

I don't know anything about the technology, but I do know this:
google built their whole biz on a really cool search company. Now, their search sucks because we know it's rigged by the highest bidder--defeating the whole purpose of their biz in the 1st place, which was to find something better than what you already knew about. (It's also rigged by random quirks of the company). It may accidently be that the highest bidder happens to be the best, but usually that is not true.

I know their search only encompasses certain periodicals as the same ones come up ad nauseum (San Jose Mercury News for example) while others never come up. I think they had a really nice run and the time to short the stock was at 475 back in feb., but others are coming up with better search and google's sale of its words (its whole biz model) has cannibalized its money maker into something that cannot be trusted.

Some of their "new" ideas are as goofy, wasteful, & expensive as ebay buying skype. Putting every page of every book in an online database without getting copyright permission--great start!

Both google & microsoft have too much money for their own good and have billions to waste on ideas like above. Some good ones will come out of it, but I think in the long run yahoo & microsoft will come up with better versions or at least versions that will be used more heavily down the road. Haven't tried the gmail so I'm ignorant of that for sure.

Myspace's clunky technology is mildly endearing except when it doesn't work. As long as they don't become super-censors, I think the competition is dead.
Posted: Aug 1, 2006 6:11 pm

myspace doesn't censor because they own all the rights to whatever is posted on their website! so... bring it on! and thank you very much.

the breakthroughs are not going to be from the big guys, but the next google-sh folks... smallish guys fed up with the big clunkers who will streamline everything so it works again. ala linux.

in the meantime, if you could unweight the google search from sites with more traffic to sites with very little traffic, that might be interesting. or run 100 computers doing simultaneous searches of google to figure out which sites are paying for position and then exclude those sites from your search automatically... i don't know what i'm talking about. but searching the internet used to be a lot more fun, granted.

google still is weighed pretty heavily towards goner, so i can't complain. thanks sergey!

That's true! We all serve at Rupert's pleasure. (Too bad online betting is not allowed anymore: I'd love to see the odds on Fidel vs. Rupert, last man standing).

Myspace is freakin' cuz all these new companies are jacking their customers with new programs of search & whatnot. It's a free for all. (That's probably why the system is so screwed up this week--myspace probably throwing new technology to stem the onslaught).

Hey, speaking of myspace, somebody click on my myspace site & make sure it's working: www.myspace.com/shangrilaprojects I need 9933 new, really good friends by sept. 1st. Thanks, Friends! You're the best! I heart you! smile emoticon

google organic search is not rigged by the highest bidder. that's the paid search to the right & the top of your organic results. that IS rigged by the highest bidder, the time of day, word manipulations, fake clicks, etc. etc. it's a cash money business. thus all of the fraud.

san jose mercury news is one of the most referenced newspapers (on the internet) in the english language, that's probably why you see them so much.

you can certainly rig the organic search to some degree by the use of keywords and link craziness. there are plenty of companies that will do it for you should you be interested in upping your rank while spending some dough. but google keeps the "algorithms" used to determine search weight under serious lock and key. and if you do any of the same searches on a regular basis (like 1x/wk, 1x/mo, looking for the same thing over & over) you can see them manipulating the algorithms on a regular basis. I don't believe you can call that a random quirk.

google is wasting their time on a bunch of other crap. navel-gazing for nerds. but their search is by far I think the best of the bunch. and the google analytics program is pure magic.

ou can certainly rig the organic search to some degree by the use of keywords and link craziness.

A friend of my brother-in-law is some high-up at google and they spend most of their time trying to figuring out ways to undo this stuff and re-rate the stuff to a reasonable hierarchal position.

What is wack about it is that they filter for content, child porn and hate-related sites were his specific examples). While I'm not a fan of child porn, I don't think that (at least most) hate sites are any more persuasive and evil than say, the GOP site. I think that it's probably a good thing if you do a search for something and you find a reference to it on Stormfront or something. I also don't know what they deem objectionable hate-speech vs. permissible (like white power not okay, zionism not okay).

The same dude also told me that Indian (dot-on-forehead) chicks had perkier tits than any other race.

what sambeaux is saying is what i'm talking about random quirks. Like let's make fun of yahoo or censor certain chinese words or whatever is in their cafeteria goofball hijinx of the day.

I believe the reason the Merc is linked-to so much is that they actually carry AP stories on their site. The Commercial Appeal, for instance, generally does not, unless it's a wire story on our front page. Thus, if you want to link to a news story on your blog or whatever, you can usually find it on the Merc (and a few other papers; Drudge often links to the Merc). Breitbart is another oft-linked site for wire stories.

The same dude also told me that Indian (dot-on-forehead) chicks had perkier tits than any other race.

That is absolutely true.

Someone please post that link again for the google earth site that has the sunbathing babes. Preferably the Swedish longitude one.
Posted: Aug 2, 2006 5:19 am

If you google kkk, it takes you to the "christian books and things" site. Innocent enough. Until you go to their merchandise page and then WHOA!!! Lots and lots of interesting presents for that white power fanatic in the family.

Hell, I myself have purchased some things for an ex- girlfriend off there. Prices are very reasonable!

i image googled tattoos records, or maybe it was records tattoo, yesterday, and there were two pictures of goner tattoos and, in between them, were nazi tattoos/record labels.tattoos of the whole cast of hogans heroes and whatnot. tonight, its gone. was it all a dream? or was there a cyberspace streetfight and the goners won?
Posted: Aug 2, 2006 6:04 am

google already has a myspace type site called orkut, but for some strange reason its only big in brazil and you need an invite to join

hook us up, scott Patterson!

yahoo has a site too called 360, but no one uses it.
Posted: Aug 2, 2006 6:42 am

misty, might it had anything to do with my friend i introduced you to the other nite??? hehe
Posted: Aug 2, 2006 3:31 pm

"orkut is unique, because it's an organically growing network of trusted friends. That way we won't grow too large, too quickly and everyone will have at least one person to vouch for them.

If you know someone who is a member of orkut, that person can invite you to join as well. If you don't know an orkut member, wait a bit and most likely you soon will.

We look forward to having you as part of the orkut community."

creepy.

I got an invite to this a coupla years ago by my wild journalist friend. Or was it my Mexican punk rock singing pal who works for Ford? I dunno, but two "friends" sites were too many. I can't remember if I even bothered with setting up an account.
