Goner Message Board / Memphis / Merle Haggard, not too shabby...

Saw the Haggard/Dylan show last night. Quite good. Looking forward to tonight, too. Anyone else go?

I caught Merle Haggard last year at the Chumash casino in California, and I was blown away. He was freaking hilarious, doing impressions of country stars. He still has that great voice. America First, god-dammit!

It's cool that he's doing a double bill with Bob Dylan. I'd be there tonight if I could.

my life, which has been full of suckage as of late, got much better yesterday -- I got my car out of the shop (only cost $2,045!), AND got taken to this concert! I got to stand on the side of the stage during Hag's set, which was extremely exciting... later, in the seats, Dylan's organ gave me a sinus attack!

good to see ya there, Robin -- doubt I will be lucky enough to score a ticket tonight as well, so have fun!

genius moment when Haggard "introduced" the band and they all shook hands with each other -- hardy har har! and I loved his drummer -- dude barely moved, definitely did not break a sweat!

Dylan's organ must be huge to reach out to the seats.

I have a Lamar Sorrento painting of Merle that has "Mama Tried" written on it, but it really looks like "Mama Fried" which i think has the makings of a great song too.

Merle didn't have such a good night, last night.

Hey Jack, what happened?
I heard Uncle Bob really sucked both nights, but this was from some young 'uns who had never seen him before, and were dismayed at the way he conTEMPOrizes the songs and didn't like him piano playing. Did he really suck?

Naw, Bob was good both nights, but the first night was better. I can totally see where someone who was expecting songs to sound exactly the way he did 40 some odd years ago might be let down, but I enjoyed it. I think it was because both nights were standard sets, really. I was anticipating last night to be a wild set (I had also heard he was doing "London Calling" and some other crazy stuff this tour), but it ended up being another standard set.

I figured that was what the deal was, and that it really wasn't that bad. I saw the ballpark show last year, and thought it was great fun. If you don't know about them the tempo changes can be kind of disconcerting though.

Glad you made the show. I love going to shows at the Orpheum.

Merle hates those dope smokin' hippees.

Merle smokes the dope himself. I was at an Austin City Limits taping a couple of years ago and he ws too stoned to remember the words to the second verse of Momma Tried. He took a couple passes at it, just started giggling and moved on.

AND Bob was like all voodoo enchanting the last two nights.

Last night, he went into a spooky version of "Cold Irons Bound," which is clearly the highlight of this tour's set FROM "Visions of Johanna" creating a twisted narrative of a man completely fucked up by obsessive love.

Donnie Herron is the most brilliant of musicians and to watch him and Bob connect musically and give each other those knowing looks as they play shows you that the music/arrangements are living entities

Merle IS pretty toasted most nights....

Hag is the king. His ex-wif/longtime harmony singer Bonnie Owens (also married to Buck) passed away either on the day of the first show, or the day before. They were close. I hear he didicated one tune to her.

wif? didicated? foot typing again, clearly.

I'm listening to what sounds like a decent audience recording of the first night right now and Bob's kicking ass. Jack, I'm jealous. You caught two nights in a row? Damn!
