What was the name of that video service they subscribed to and I wonder who has ALL THOSE TAPES? I wanna try searching em on You Tube as I know the service had a name on each video they'd show.

I always liked that "I Against I" and "Death Valley 69" were in heavy rotation.

Me too!!!!

And there was a great Fall one, I just can't recall it. Then there was that creepy "Shadow of a Doubt" Sonic Youth one too.

Those were awesome.

The Fall videos I remember seeing were live at Texas Records, from the Cutting Edge MTV show( "Lay of the Land" and "2 x 4"). I never saw any regular Fall videos there.

Sonic Youth "Shadow of a Doubt" (Kim Gordon doing her own stunts on top of a train!!)

Husker Du "Makes No Sense At All" backed with the Mary Tyler Moore theme song cover

Oh yeah--girls would totally DANCE when that "Makes No Sense at all"/"Mary Tyler Moore" would come on. Me included.

That and The Cult video for "She Sells Sanctuary". This was also a big dance track at George's.

Cro-mags and "She's on It" by Beasties.

"She's on It"

You just reminded me what a fucking pushover giggling twit I used to be as an 18 yr old; that I would get a racing heartbeat and all sexxed up when that video came on. For a bunch of PALE, skinny Jewish rich boys who were "rapping". Dawn Smith and I actually CAMPED OUT for front row Beastie Boys seats. And got em.

Hah, Cort, I just remembered something! Remember the PE show with Digital Underground and Kid n Play? I remember I was sitting way up in the nosebleed and looked down and there you and your boys were...clad all in black with white faces. The ONLY white faces, I might add. That was hilarious!

Reverse minstrels. Funny to think of 2pac with a fade doing the running man. Thug Life f'reals.
Posted: Mar 15, 2006 11:47 pm
Are we talking about the videos that would always be playing before the shows started up? If so, I always remember them playing the videos for Beastie Boy's "Gratitude" (where they use the Pink Floyd amps and have dolly tracking shots ala Live at Pompeii) and King Missle's "Detachable Penis"...

Ain't that the truth.

Remember how the band and thus 2Pac had that one song where they held up giant caricatures in front of themselves the whole song? Like the kind that get drawn on the boardwalk in Florida?

My god.... I totally forgot about those videos.... for some reason when hhjack mentioned King Missle, it all came back.

my first non mid-south coliseum show was at the antenna in 1986...St. Vitus and the mentors...I remember the homemade mentors porn movies on the tv screens while they played...its a wonder I am a well adjusted human after seeing those at the age of 15. Also, Dave Chandler of St. Vitus' new band, Debris Inc. is playing at the bucc sunday...it will be almost 20 years to the day since I saw him play at my first club show...god Im old.
Posted: Mar 18, 2006 3:48 pm
I was there. Ross Johnson was SCREAMING drunk with glee at being able to see The Mentors.

I remember Darren telling a bunch of new kids to the scene, "THIS is going to be a REAL show". The same uniformly hardcore dudes that had played rough with me in the pit for a few years for having long hair and wearing Sabbath T's were now groovin' to the low end heaviness of St. Vitus. Good times.

I remember the slam dancing stopping immediately when the Mentors porn video came on the TVs. Then that crazy Liesel(?) threw a chair at El Duce. Great, great show.

Steve McGehee has the videos.

We were doing a Beer Bust/ Video Night with the actual Rock America videos for a while here at Murphy's a couple of years back- didn't ever really take off like we hoped. Maybe the Bucc will try and get them and copy yet ANOTHER thing they learned from us...

Anyway, the videos have been stored in a garage I think, and a lot of them are deteriating. As far as I know, Rock America still sells these (I am not sure, though).

I used to love to play a Beasties "rock block" and of course- Cro-Mags, Bad Brains, Skinny Puppy, King Missile, Fetchin' Bones, Tony Powers (don't nobody move/ this is a heist) aw hell, I'm gonna cry...

Like Mark McGehee said- "Ya'll gonna miss us when we're gone"

I also remember El Duce being across the street at Murphy's before that show.

He would order his drinks by alcohol proof- pissed that they didn't have Bacardi 151, drank all of the Turkey 101 and then went to Rumplemintz 100 proof. Nothing under 100 proof would be tolerated.

All this during "happy hour" time with his hood resting on the back of his head- Visualize that!
