yo-

any of you web-savvy goners, we need some advice on updating the site.

no, we're not going all crazy and making it look like every other website.

yes, we will still look like we're stuck in 1993.

but we need some help figgering out some shipping charge stuff.

we know that paypal does this, but we don't want to do shipping as a % or as a flat rate. we'd rather charge what it costs to ship, plus the cost of the mailer.

anyone with checkout cart experience and/or advice, email or call us.

thanks-

the mgt

You might check with your webhosting site to see if they provide scripts that are compatible with their environment. A lot of them do.

If you google for "shipping calculator scripts" you'll get a bunch of hits, some free (and shit) and most some hacked script somebody will try and sell you. Here is one that is free. Note that this page discusses an older ASP script but that they also link a newer link for ASP .NET enabled sites. Much mumbojumbo. Again, your best bet is to send your webhost an email. I personally don't have any shopping cart experience, sorry. I imagine one of the other peanut gallery residents do. Good luck.

Here's what http://www.usps.com has to say about web tools and shipping:

(hmmm, how many posts can I do per minute). It looks like the USPS site does have documentation on how to script it yourself - but this would only apply to USPS shipping. They also had some links to other ecommerce providers of similar tools but I didn't follow that.

I got a friend who can do it, but she charges some $$$. I think she talked to Tres about this a while back. You want me to have her give you a call?

I think she charges $200 dollars & can set it all up from here. I dunno, I'll ask.

Eric, find out if your host supports PHP scripting

If they do, I'll do the rest. you just gotta tell me how it'll work.

This aint my field at all, but for what it's worth the Forced Exposure site seems to work something like that - when you place your order, the total does not include shipping. There are charts with estimated costs for reference only, and it looks like you aren't actually billed until the shipping cost has been calculated and availabilty is confirmed.

If you're using Paypal, it's kind of tricky to get it set where it charges "actual" postage-type rates. It gets even trickier with international orders, and orders of multiple items (since it costs about the same to send 2 7"s as it does 1 7").

Best we could come up with for the Shit Sandwich ordering page is to have different postage-paid rates for US, Candada/Mexico, and "elsewhere" each as a drop-down menu option. See at: http://shitsandwichrecords.com/order.htm

Of course, if somebody orders multiple copies or numerous titles in one order, they wind up paying more for postage than they ought to. I just haven't been able to figure out a better way to set it up for Paypal.

I don't mean to be a wet blanket about this, and I by no means operate an ecommerce based site nor do I have much experience with fulfillment services but, I loathe, hate and abhor PayPal. Too many of my friends and myself have had bad experiences with them; mainly when on the receiving end of transactions. They have too much access to your account and in a couple of cases friends of mine have had money withdrawn from their bank accounts when payment transactions have gone awry. For myself, they've messed up my account three times and even now, when trying to simply use some site's PayPal with no membership thingo, PayPal refuses to process my order because they have my Credit Card confused with my old, deleted accounts. You can never actually talk to a human either, if you need to sort anything out. Their customer service (especially since Ebay bought them) is nonexistent.

I realize that a rant against PayPal has little to do with Shipping Calculators but I just wanted to pass along to you label owners that using PayPal as part of your fulfillment process makes it more likely that I will have to pass when purchasing your goods (as if you care). PayPal sucks!

I only have a savings account at a credit union tied to my Paypal account and an expired credit card so I'm kinda safe.

But, if somebody uses a stolen credit card to purchase something from you and they pay you through Paypal, Paypal can freeze all of your $ in your Paypal account and whatever they feel they are owed from your checking/savings/credit card.

I have no alternative suggestions besides money orders & cash. Most hosts will have shopping cart scripts built in or ones that they like to use, I'd email them for specifics and then run it by smarter friends.

Ya know, Eric, you could just run credit cards through the store. People who wanted to use credit cards would have to actually call you, but it ain't like ya'll are amazon.com or anything.

yeah but then you don't get the drunken impulse sales at 2 a.m... that's where the money on the internet is. that's how watchmeeatahotdog.com pays for itself.

if you're willing to drop a few hundred bucks on an SSL certificate we could set up credit card processing on the goner site, where it would either do transactions automatically, or it could send you the credit card number via an encrypted e-mail and you could run the transaction yourself when you get the e-mail.
