So much for Richie Unterberger showing us the love. . . -Jeremy

AMG REVIEW: Too Much Guitar is perhaps an accidentally too-accurate title of a record that might have indeed been recorded with too much guitar. Or, at least, it could be fairly said that it wasn't recorded with enough vocals, since they're mixed down low enough that you sometimes think you're listening to a live recording rather than a studio one. Sure, clearly mixed lyrics aren't the focal point of records such as this one, with its raw mix of '60s-indebted garage rock with more rootsy American rock'n'roll. These aren't the complaints of an audio purist, however, but of one who expects more of vocals than a hollow, hoarse shout somewhere down the other end of a tube, which is what Greg Cartwright often sounds like here. It ends up feeling a little like listening to a punked-out Chocolate Watch Band with a crummy sound system, and that's not good; the Chocolate Watch Band were raw too, but not at the sacrifice of being able to record the guitars and vocals so they really packed a distinct punch. When Cartwright and the band bring out the acoustic country-folk-rock tinge (and raise the vocal level) way more for "Funny Thing," it comes as a welcome relief on a record where there's too much hard-to-separate-from-each-other clamorous din. I will be saving a seperate bundle of cash to spend on records in the store so you better be stocked up by next year cos I'm comin' with a fat wallet, baby!
