Goner Message Board / Goner Records / Anyone into black or death metal?
Posted: Dec 30, 2005 11:57 pm
Also, I've never been to Goner Records before. How is their metal selection?
Posted: Dec 31, 2005 12:08 am
If you could imagine an old western scene with the tumbleweed blowing down past the saloon and jailhouse across the street, I think that describes it.

They do not have Venom. Nor any Iron Maiden picture-disks. You will also not find any Cutthroats 9.

Eric did turn me on to Pentagram, though.
Posted: Dec 31, 2005 12:13 am
Thanks. I won't bother making the trip out there then.
Posted: Dec 31, 2005 12:14 am
I think I did spy some Scorpions and Overkill, though.

Lotsa great Punk Rock. They can order pretty much anything you want. And if it's local, I'm pretty sure they'll carry it.

And I love the metal.
Posted: Dec 31, 2005 12:15 am
Naw, you ought to go. This ain't metal haven, but they got a lot of other cool stuff. And a lot you never heard before.
Posted: Dec 31, 2005 12:17 am
Metal's about the only thing I listen to, but I listen primarily to the two genres I mentioned in the subject...some death/grind, sludge, doom, noise. Mostly the older stuff. I wonder if there are any local black/death bands worth a shit?
Posted: Dec 31, 2005 12:18 am
Adios Gringo and Filthy Diablo. Hang on a sec...

I'm on dialup so this may take awhile...

I'll let you know how it turns out, but I'm expecting goofy grind. Would I be wrong? I'm more into traditional, straightforward black and death.
Posted: Dec 31, 2005 12:28 am
Nah that's not really what I'm looking for but thanks anyways. That's more like stoner rock.
Posted: Dec 31, 2005 12:31 am
circa 98. You may feel the wait not worth it with the dial-up. Tell you what man, I'll drop off a disc of some really awesome stuff down there tomorrow.

Just tell them you're the "metal dude".

Who do you like locally?
Posted: Dec 31, 2005 12:34 am
Maybe Epoch of Unlight?
Posted: Dec 31, 2005 12:34 am
Well I don't like anyone locally. Like I said, I don't know of any good black or death metal bands from memphis at all. I know there's Epoch of Unlight, but I think they're from Knoxville or something and they're nothing special at all, and then there's an old death metal band that was on JL America in the 90's but I can't think of their name at the moment. Don't worry about dropping off that disc either man, I live like an hour away. I'd probably go if I knew I could browse through some stuff I'm into.
Posted: Dec 31, 2005 12:37 am
Epoch is Memphis. Sorry, man, I thought you were in town. Have a good one, man.
Posted: Dec 31, 2005 12:40 am
Hey, man, one last try. Here's some Mangina from New Orleans.
Posted: Dec 31, 2005 12:51 am
Nah that really didn't do much for me.

myspace bands are inconsequential

Man this guy is hard to please.

Posted: Jan 4, 2006 5:17 am
myspace death metal sounds no less consequential to my ears. Good thing I'm not an A&R guy for Dark Carnage records and tapes.
Posted: Jan 5, 2006 6:04 pm
Dark Carnage records and tapes
where the cocks are just as hard as the music!
Posted: Jan 6, 2006 12:29 am
Tell me more about Dark Carnage records and tapes...
Posted: Jan 6, 2006 11:48 pm
Let's face it : they gave up on you Hatefvcker...
That's when I come in : how about some IMPALED NAZARENE ?

Sodomize thru the night - who has killed the fucking light
What the fuck do you expect to see
When Jesus lying naked in front of me

Goat in pain - the satanic reign
Who has killed the fucking light,
Who has killed the fucking light, huh?
You are all doomed to misery
So fuck some goatcorpses in praise of me

(repeat chorus)

yeah, I know all about Imp Naz...they were once a good band. Do you know if there are any local black/death bands worth checking out, or do you know of anyone else seriously into this shit? Goner records sounds like a place to avoid haha

if you want to talk metal sometime let me know and I'll give you my handle on AIM

Just googled me some satan, haha!!

You guys really into goatcorpses?

Posted: Jan 23, 2006 4:14 am
That was awseome!
Posted: Jan 27, 2006 9:28 pm
creeping rusty meat, truly the heart and soul of death metal
Posted: Feb 4, 2006 3:14 am
DUDE. Evil Army are not a Myspace band. Goner's gotta have it. Get it. Don't think AIM over Myspace makes you less of a fag.

Seriously though they're great. I hope they don't settle for Panzerfaust. They need to be on Relapse or EARACHE.
Posted: Feb 4, 2006 10:11 pm
I can see discussing metal is a fruitless venture here...
Posted: Feb 4, 2006 11:32 pm
Yeah, if you don't like Evil Army, you're pretty much a lost cause/obviously a douche.
Posted: Feb 5, 2006 2:23 am
sam...sup, brah??? give Loomis a holla.
get a new drummer and play the Blackout this year...
Posted: Feb 7, 2006 12:55 am
Dude, we'd do it if they'd let us play. Greg Carboner got metal chops.
Posted: Feb 7, 2006 7:16 pm
greg also has a celtic frost tattoo...
Posted: Feb 8, 2006 8:43 pm
Funny enough, here's a Celtic Frost question:

They've just been announced for a tour in the early Fall. Does anyone know if Tom G. and the gang are doing pre-Into the Pandemonium shit or Cold Lake-era? Both

I was so excited to see their logo on a gig poster last week, but then I remembered reading the Tom G Warrior autobiography, and I remembered how he disowns anything good they ever did in favor of "Cherry Orchards." Maybe Hellhammer stuff is too much to ask, but is this the Cherry Orchards tour??????????
Posted: Feb 8, 2006 8:47 pm
Thomass Gaybriel Warrior should be killed and eaten by the members of some Norwegian church burning cult for that transgression.
Posted: Feb 8, 2006 8:52 pm
Or an Alabama church burning cult if they tour here.
Posted: Feb 8, 2006 9:13 pm
transforming them into a tennessee church burning cult.
Posted: Feb 10, 2006 1:40 am
How exactly do I spell a death grunt?
Posted: Feb 10, 2006 2:30 am
Depends on if you're Michael Hutchence or not.
Posted: Mar 18, 2006 8:54 pm
last time at Goner i was looking for Deicide..no such luck. Although i did find a Sugar Hill Gang record there.. I played it backwards on a Numark tt200 it sounds just like black metal. No pun intended.

I'm going to see Isis in a couple weeks in San Diego (missing the show in LA for APE). Stoked about that. Zombi is opening for them. Did anyone here catch their show in Memphis?
Posted: Mar 22, 2006 6:02 pm
We played with Zombi last year when they came through. Watching horror music soundtracks made live in front of you is kind of neat.
Posted: Mar 22, 2006 10:11 pm
Cool. I'm thinking it's going to be good show.
Posted: Mar 23, 2006 3:22 pm
NASUM is great - no goat corpses though

Posted: Mar 23, 2006 3:22 pm
Singer died in Thailand during last year's tsunami.
Posted: Mar 24, 2006 3:42 pm

The Apes or APE or Ape didn't play. Midnight Snake opened up. They were faaaantastic. Zombi played one long song with the guitarist from Midnight Snake sitting in. Double faaaantastic. Sounded even more like Goblin than they normally do. Then the electricity flickered and took down Zombi's laptop. End of show.

NASUM is great

Indeed. Sad about the singer.

I don't think laptops are very metal....
Posted: Mar 24, 2006 9:40 pm

Theirs don't even have spikes on them. It's two guys - drummer and bass player - both play keyboards. It's like Rush without guitars making horror music. Neat to watch at least once. Just my take.
Posted: Mar 24, 2006 9:57 pm
Hmmm.... sounds like classic "opening band" syndrome. Well, Isis will be there to cleanse my palate.

Thanks for the info though. I like to be an informed heckler.
Posted: Mar 27, 2006 2:49 pm

That's true. Zombi aren't metal. The reason they're on a metal label is they sound like Goblin, and Goblin did soundtracks for Dario Argento's films and Dawn of the Dead. Since metalheads love these movies, I guess that's how they end up lumped with metal bands. They're really more of a prog band.

I'd like the latest Celtic Frost more if it was by anyone else.

But rumor has it they WILL be doing some Hellhammer stuff on this year's tour.
Posted: Aug 22, 2006 8:45 pm
check out Burn The Masses

not really death metal but extreme hateful grindcore.
Posted: Aug 31, 2006 2:59 pm
Zombi is awesome. Midnite Snake is the best band in the world. Both from Pittsburgh. Woo hoo! Hometown pride!
Posted: Oct 3, 2006 4:43 am
Saw Celtic Frost this past weekend. Fucking great.
Posted: Oct 3, 2006 3:27 pm
My friend's going to see them in Atlanta. Perhaps I'll try to make it. No 'Juices Like Wine?" Good.
Posted: Oct 3, 2006 4:58 pm
Lots of Usurper and Procreation of the Wicked, no Cherry Orchards.

you can't talk about black metal with out talking about 1349

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/eDSSqAF-VdU"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/eDSSqAF-VdU" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

1349 was the year that the black plague hit norway. You don't get more black metal than that.
Posted: Apr 7, 2007 11:14 pm

that's better
Posted: Apr 7, 2007 11:21 pm

better still
Posted: Apr 8, 2007 6:29 am
Death metal's real funny and like ...scandinavian!
Ha ha ha!
Where the fuck is all you people's blacknuss?!
Posted: Apr 16, 2007 1:26 pm
Funniest metal-in-Memphis thing I ever saw was some shitty, although apparently huge band coming onstage at MiM and going "Hello Memphis, we're Saliva and we love you!"... even Ian 'Wolf Child' Astbury had a job to follow that gem of inanity...
