two tomatoes:

Bateman, will you come over and spoon?
colbito:

Rocks Off will remain open regardless of how hard hurricane Katrina smashes into Mexico...
jay reatard:

wow i haven't even been paying attention. well if anyone wants to use this as an excuse to come visit me...come on. just stay outta steph's way when she's studying.

call me
Chad
Womb Raider:

could be a bad one.

word on the street is matty will not be making it to town to DJ tonight at the circle bar.

sam & katherine are on the way to memphis.

we are staying put, maybe we will slink off late sunday night if it's looking dire, but probably not. we might also ride it out in peggy & dan's place, it's got 2 floors and might be above sea level. probably not though.

I've got a cordless circular saw if we need to cut an escape hole in the roof. saw = life.
Womb Raider:

if y'all don't know what we're talking about, look at this picture

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/storm_graphics/AT12/refresh/AL1205W+gif/144929 W_sm.gif

if that holds true, it gonna get nas-tay up in heauh.
Womb Raider:

also look for gas to go up another fifty cents a gallon as that path would destroy one of the biggest oil terminals in the gulf, port fourchon.
Jack Stands:

At least you got to see Wheel of Fortune. Be proud of that.
Womb Raider:

I hope they're getting Pat Sajak to higher ground.
Jack Stands:

I know this is a different thread, but, I'm mad as hell they didn't let y'all yell "Wheel of Fortune". What a gip.

Anyway, y'all be carefull down there. How are the pumps in NOLA? It's slightly under sea level anyway, isn't it?
Womb Raider:

the pumps can handle most major flooding from rainfall, but if the levees get topped out, all bets are off, the pumps will be completely submerged.

on that note, I'm cracking my first beer of the day.... now.
Jack Stands:

If I send a case floating down the river now, you should get 'em by Tuesday.
colbito:

does this mean the Rob Zombie/Mastadon show is still sold out?
colbito:

does this mean the Rob Zombie/Mastadon show is still sold out?

oh....the joke is that it's Monday night at HOB....
fierydrunk:

Be careful y'all--remember what Hurricane Camille pulled way back in '69. Has a hurricane ever directly hit NOLA?
colbito:

Betsy kinda did the same thing in '65.......came from atlantic, hit the keys though.....headed straight for NOLA....hit west of the mouth at Grand Isle...
michael bateman:

i'm riding up w/ paul & seth & some puppy dogs (to jackson, then memphis).
Womb Raider:

I'll be looting michael's records in 36-48 hours.
Useless Eater:

Pat Robertson will blame the hurricane on "Weed and Hennesey" and those who tolerate the No Limit lifestyle.

Take all your Shit Dogs records and your pets to safety!
michael bateman:

fuck it.
michael bateman:

i just took a walk down to the tchoup-stop and saw Lord George who was buying a sandwich. he said he's heading up to memphis too. so, if you see a big haired heavy metal hobgoblin- that's The Lord. Death to false Metal!

he said he can't wait to check out some tex-mex chain up there where you can throw your peanuts on the floor. i explained that we have something similar here, but he wasn't listening. this is just a crazy day for everyone in new orleans.

the super wal-mart even closed down at 4pm. that's pretty serious! i have a story that goes along with this, but i'll save it so i have something to say when i get to memphis.
Theresa K:

good luck beating the storm out of town. pictures of NOLA folks boarding up their windows are above the fold in the NYTimes online. yer big news. be safe
Jack Stands:

Yeah, y'all holler if/when you make it up to Memphis.

Sam, if you read this, my cell phone is working much better now.
Womb Raider:

super wal-mart is closed? damn that is serious. I still need to fill my prescription for 1.75L of early times. hope my local merchants are still operating. I also need to get a wallet-full of what our mayor calls "the benjamins."
blidget:

WR, I'm ready to go Monday about 2 a.m., I wonder if he has an R.U.R single?
jay reatard:

fuck mempho .... come to buzzard's roost

more like "NOLA gets the Purple Finger"!!
Art Boonparn:

Stranded in New Orleans cos' my car ain't got no brakes. Luckily, I got a bottle of whiskey, carton of smokes an' plenty of ammo for my pellet gun to shoot all the snakes that flow over from the bayou. I'll see you fuck-o's at Goner Fest in my snakeskin hoodie.
king louie:

the best part about the cane is the aftermath, when the flood waters come up throw firecrackers into da water and scoop up dem crawdaddy's when they berl up to da top...firecrackers are chinese, right???!!! let's call it it even. no way fukkerrrsss!!!
Whiskey Bent:

-remember what Hurricane Camille pulled way back in '69

Well..I just want ya'll to know that my momma almost named me 'Camille' as a result of that storm...she was holed-up inna public bathroom really preggers during it...apparently while my (fucking-asshole) dad was....
Whiskey Bent:

p.s. thank goodness she didn't
Womb Raider:

Okay we are officially throwing in the towel at this point, anyone in the Jackson, MS caravan (or in Jackson, MS) please call me when you read this. 504-669-4632. We're going to leave around 7:00 am hopefully.

-Chris
Womb Raider:

two tomatoes:

two tomatoes:

YEEEHAW, there's a storm a comin'!!
fierydrunk:

That Katrina looks INSANE. Who's headed to the Superdome? Seriously, be careful!
Useless Easter:

People are hiding out in the Superdome. Mayor said to bring food for 3-5 days. No mention of how many gallons of vodka you should bring.

And my wife said that tornados fuck shit up on the outer rim of the hurricane. Hope you goners are ok.
two tomatoes:

seems like a good time to raid that record collection, batemen!
Whiskey Bent:

man...I just turned on the glow-box to see about all this....damn...they're calling it a 'nightmare scenario'???

I wish the best for all of you sweethearts.
And your record collections too...
rocknrollnurse:

break out your Quintron CD & listen to"hurricane".. the greatest theme song for hurricanes ever written & performed..."the big one's coming"...
lamb puppy:

baaaa-rk.
mattpendleton:

hey I am in oxford Mississippi. maybe going up to memphis today or 2marrow to go shopping at goner. I have my cell phone but not sure if it's gonna be working soon beacause it's based in N.O. and mayb get shut down...I have my turntables and some rekkids so wouldn't mind dj'ing somewhere like the buccaneer...

Brings up a good point; Goner is closed on Mondays, right? But there should be something going on somewhere for the NOLA folks. Can we put something together?
Jack Stands:

Also, thinking about this: they're saying this is huge with possibilities of severe flooding in NOLA. The huricane is making a path up the delta and flood plains north. It's all dumping back into the Mississippi, and coming back down through New Orleans. Hmmm...
eric o:

Monday party at the Buccaneer? Pre-show at Goner?

Stay tuned!
satanic war chicken:

all the cool people in mobile hope that nola is still there for the rockening.
dtrain:

DAAAAAMMMMMMM SON! That storm is buggin..... Hope everybody got out alive cause tonight is the night yo. Good luck y'all!
Whiskey Bent:

all the cool people in mobile hope that nola is still there for the rockening.

I thought about that too and then I felt really shitty for it.....damn you Katrina for being so 'organized'!
peg:

Calling Jason, hey, if you're out there, call. Cell phones not working. We are stuck here. We have one more chance at leaving, with Alex, but he might not want to, so.. I don't know. We have 2 bottles of Canadien Club

Glad you all made it to safety.

I was thinking, oh it's just another hurricane until I read this:

A statement from the National Weather Service in Slidell, near New Orleans, Louisiana, warned that much of the affected area "will be uninhabitable for weeks, perhaps longer."

Low-rise, wood-frame buildings will be destroyed, and concrete apartment buildings "will sustain major damage," it said.

"High-rise office and apartment buildings will sway dangerously, a few to the point of total collapse," the warning read.

"All windows will blow out. Airborne debris will be widespread, and may include heavy items such as household appliances and even light vehicles."
bvalentine:

So Jackson wasnt good enough for you gaytards??? We were gonna have a hurricane part for you goons tonight & shit.

More beer for me.
eric o:

we will rescue everyone with the GONER HELICOPTER!

just send out the SOS and we're there!

no joking, hope everyone who stayed is all right. l
Alisa:

Have some friends from NOLA who just happened to be up here for a wedding this weekend. I asked them today when they were planning on going back and they said, "Really...it'll be months before we can go back." Said officials were talking weeks and weeks to even get the water level down to where New Orleans will be habitable again.
Also said to fill up your car with gas tonight. They're expecting the oil rigs to go, with gas prices taking another big upswing.

Y'all all take good care.
eric o:

Someone aksed me, and i din't know...

what do they do with folks in the hospitals?
Theresa K:

This might be helpful

SwizzleStick:

We care about our brothas and sistahs in NOLA. We just want you to be safe and to be able to return there after it's over. OK?

I hope you're all out of there by now.

Talk to you on the other side of the weather...
Jack Stands:

Hope y'all get this while the power is still on. Y'all stay safe down there. If you made it up to Memphis, holler. Should be able to find something to do on a Monday night.
Theresa K:

I just saw a photo in the NYTimes online with a caption that "three Atlantic bottlenose dolphins were evacuated from the Marine Life Oceanarium in Gulfport, Miss. to a hotel pool." Hope the city and state take as good care of humans as they do dolphins.
Whiskey Bent:

NOLA Goners, PLEASE do tell us when you're safely away from Katrina....okay? Who are ALL of 'em?

I guess this thread brought up a few..

Peg
Art Boonparn

Man. It gives me the shivers thinking about what it's gonna be like tomorrow and the weeks to come....all that swamp land and all those critters agitated.....man.....that historic city...all those people holed-up in that facility probably not being able to leave for days....people stuck on the highways even now.....what you may come home to....unimaginable.
mattpendleton:

Bateman, and martel are in memphis. I'm in oxford mississippi. King Louie and art boonparn I think are trying to ride it out. Peg was gonna ride it out but isn't answering her phone so I think she got a ride out of town with chilton.
chikachikaslimshady:

Ridin' the Storm OUT!

REO will pull ya'll through!
Whiskey Bent:

Thanks Matt.
I wished someone wouldda been able to drag Louie away, that's a bummer, but somehow, I'm not surprised. I hope he got himself a case of potted-meat.
cripps:

i wonder whats going to happen with all of those cemetarys, floating coffins?, this whole thing has a creepy DOOMSDAY feeling , lots of buildings will collapse, poeple are going to die
larry king said this will be the biggest baddest meanest storm ever hitting modern day america
jay reatard:

louie, reb, art, blythe, panzer.....i hope ya'll bought plenty of ammo. dem crackheads are gonna be roofless (literally).
circuit city and the black dads:

does anyone know why the hurricane is red on some stations and green on others.?
colbito:

we will rescue everyone with the GONER HELICOPTER!

didn't the shark get that one, or did the Dutch Masters guys get away?

I'm in Houston....on my way to San Antonio to find my stolen bike in the basement of the Alamo....

If NOLA is destroyed look for me in San Francisco or Chicago...unless they are hiring burned out bartenders at Goner.....

jay reatard:

colby...i here the Castro is in need of a punk/indie record store.
theeeya there big boy........
jay reatard:

Chad just talked to Jason, He says it's raining in Jessica's apt. He and Blythe are riding it out! We haven't heard from Loumus.
Thinking bout Nola- Stephanie
Whiskey Bent:

well I'm happy to see that it may not be 'as' severe this morining and NOLA won't be it's direct hit...

hang in there, everybody!!
jay reatard:

Just heard. Pieces of the roof coming off the superdome!
Hang in there my Mobile peeps too.
love- Stephanie
Womb Raider:

hangin at andria's in memphis.... we were in good spirits until about an hour ago, then the room fell silent. levees are breaking on the industrial canal, reports of people trapped in attics in the 9th wd and eastern nola, reports of river levees breaking now.... city is FUUUUCKED. don't even know if it's going to be worth going back to pick up the pieces, if anything's left at all.
two tomatoes:

bateman, i'll be looking for you in memphis! You can't escape the wrath of the two tomatoes!
chikachikaslimshady:

Katrina sounds like a chick who would give you a blow job at a kegger. Ya'll in NOLA will be aight!
bazooka joe:

Glad to hear your outta ther Chris. I tried to call you last night to no avail.
Category 69 goner:

Just in....NOLA levees will hold. Anyone know if Mashburn or Birdman are hunkerin down and ridin it out? Hopefully everyone isn't getting their cooter browned too bad.
chikachikaslimshady:

NOLA under Tornado watch until Noon today as well, DOUBLE WHAMMY perhaps (just heard about it on the weather channel)
Golightly:

Levee has been breached.....

.. A LEVEE BREACH OCCURRED ALONG THE INDUSTRIAL CANAL AT TENNESSE STREET. 3 TO 8 FEET OF WATER IS EXPECTED DUE TO THE BREACH...LOCATIONS IN THE WARNING INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO ARABI AND 9TH WARD OF NEW ORLEANS.

This is where my daughter lives......crap.
She's here in Memphis thank god
Womb Raider:

my earlier post was a tad dramatic... watching fox news will do that to you. switched to cnn now i'm starting to feel better about the prospects of our house still being there when we get back. in some capacity at least.

me and the old lady have hundreds and hundreds of 45s with no sleeves just sitting in the living room, I imagine those all took off like frisbees if our windows blew out, so there's probably shards of vinyl sticking in the walls and shit, should be a funny sight.
Womb Raider:

and that levee breach is the exact same thing that happened in hurricane betsy 40 years ago, you'd think they'd have prevented it from happening again, those fuckers. fats domino's house is a goner!!!
eric o:

Mr Quintron get out? I know his bar is a ship but i'd imagine that's all under water now...

Martel! The Visibile Man lp... noooooooooo!
Womb Raider:

oh by the way, that flooding is limited to the LOWER 9th ward, which is the area east of the industrial canal... UPPER 9th ward is still okay, which is where quintron lives (and probably your daughter as well, Golightly)

hope Q got out okay though. nola.com reports "Uptown New Orleans has been hit with extensive wind damage in the Napoleon Avenue area." which is where Jason & Blythe are holed up, hope they're doing okay.
fierydrunk:

I saw a really bad flooded street photo from Uptown in today's online NY Times.
mattpendleton:

I'm hopin' Panzer, blythe, and King Louie are all right. they are a tough breed so I think they will make it through the flood! were are Peggy, dan , and alex ? cell phones don't seem to be workin'.
Womb Raider:

peggy and dan made it to memphis a couple of hours ago, they left new orleans at midnight last night!!!! i'll spare the details but alex gave them his car keys and stayed, boarded up in treme.
peg:

We made it to memphis, left at midnight, alex would not come with us but gave us his car. Matt? Where are you? we're at Dimitrie's. I am worried about jason, blythe, jessica, manny, alex, it's worse than being there..
peg:

p.s. Jason told me yesterday that louis evacuated a while back
Whiskey Bent:

well that's good news, but Jason and Blythe and Panzer shouldda left...

Can someone direct me to streaming live news coverage outta NOLA...I use real player (free version)...I keep diggin and I'm getting nothing...NOLA.com only has clips.....or direct me to somethin else??
Adam:

Peggy! Glad you made it out. If you all need anything, call me or Sylvia.
June Gibbons:

Lo blesses you two. we are so glad to be at ow friends home in at der city on de bluff. @ this time, it feel sick to be away w/ wondering of our friends that was stayin'. i know they tough, but I'll worry.
We'll calls when we can.
arman:

i was listenign to npr this a.m. and an 'expert' was saying how the storm is whipping up all sorts of shit and dumping it in the streets. things like alligators, snakes and toxic waste. when it's all over it's going to be man vs. mutated beast locked in a desperate battle set in a post-apocalyptic world.
Wendy C:

I am officially sick of hearing about Hurricane Katrina. I like your vision of post-storm N'Awlins, arman... we should film THAT...
Theresa K:

I've had the Weather Channel on since my brunch guests left yesterday.

Sherry --- weather.com has streaming clips too, but I don't have their player on my computer. The TV component of the Weather CHannel has their hosts saying things like "there's very little data coming from N.O." as if the idiots watching can't figure out w/ that powerful storm, surely all the things you need to transmit data and images are kinda fucked up

glad to hear folks got out. Weather Channel and various newspapers reported that the Superdome roof got peeled off in two sections..
mattpendleton:

I'm in oxford Miss. we'll try to call ya. we are thinkin of comin' up there today or maybe tomarrow? I wonder when it'll be o.k. to go to new orleans. probably not tomarrow. huh?
mattpendleton:

best news coverage of Katrina: on fox news some reporter was on bourbon st. and says:
"there is a sign flying off of a bar and flying down the street...it says "RICK's CABERET"........
kermitthefrog:

when it's all over it's going to be man vs. mutated beast locked in a desperate battle set in a post-apocalyptic world.

my lone trip to new orleans involved rick's caberet and stripper drugs. and likely liver problems later in life.
mattpendleton:

"when it's all over it's going to be man vs. mutated beast locked in a desperate battle set in a post-apocalyptic world. "

I think that describes parts of New Orleans even without a hurricane
david t:

Yo, June Gibbons and Peggy....glad you guys got out of town. Give me a call if you need anything when you get a better picture of what's going on. You guys are not with cellular any more, are you?
peg:

I just saw footage of a shopping cart traveling 2 mph across a parkinglot
dutch hercules:

is this thing almost over with.. er what..? i havent been payin attention either.. The Rockening on a barge?
luteinizer:

Eric-
Don't know if you found it on that site, but most time hospitals move who they can. Those they can't wait it out. The hospitals, news stations, etc have huge systems with back up UPS/generator/battery units that will give them power. More than likely it will only support what is necessary, so the nurses will be walking down the halls with flash lights.
arman:

I just saw footage of a shopping cart traveling 2 mph across a parkinglot

was it full of aluminum cans and being pushed by an emaciated crackhead?
SinglesGoingSteady:

Living in Florida as I do, I must say the worst part of this (other than death/your home being destroyed) must be for the people who have to gather in masses at that football stadium. I had to spend the night in a high school gym during one of our hurricanes, I was surrounded by crazy crack heads who were talking to themselves, and psychotic bums who smelled like they just shit their pants. People were more worried about somebody robbing or attacking them than they were about the hurricane. I imagine the N.O. stadium situation is that multiplied by 1,000.....
arman:

at least some drunk chick might show them her tits
eric o:

it isn't mardis gras, arman!

when it's all over it's going to be man vs. mutated beast locked in a desperate battle set in a post-apocalyptic world.

That's why Panzer had to stay. I don't know which side he's going to be fighting for, though.
red eyed willie:

Good luck y'all.
I think the worst should be over by now, right?
Joe Pestilence:

I hope everyone's doin' OK down there, and will have as little damage to their homes and posessions as possible!

My Mom ,one of my Sisters and Brother In Law safely retreated to my Aunt's house in Clanton,AL. My mom's house is pretty close to the beach,i hope it didn't get hit by pine trees(like what happened to our house in 'Goula during Hurricane Frederick) or a storm surge! My other sister works at a Motel 6 on the beach in Biloxi but got moved to a location in Gulfport that's a little further from the fray (but not much). I don't know what happened to my neice, her husband (nephew?) and little Matthew but i have to assume the best--- i haven't heard of any casualties from this storm yet.

Of course it would suck to come back to the Crescent City only to find out the Nutrias have taken over and all the humans have been enslaved! That would be a stone bummer.
Wendy C:

rocknrollnurse- hey that's what I called my "nurse" costume for Halloween a couple years ago. I chased everyone around with a giant plastic syringe, then I'd put on some surgical gloves suggestively. It was hot.
jay reatard:

nebody heard from Jason or Blythe?
peg:

alex is , smattered, shattered covered smothered +diced and ++++ bless-ed The flood is only 5 feet in his neighborhood anyone heard from marengo street or Lefty?
jay reatard:

i talked to panzer at 6:30am.....roof missing above stairwell, house-rockin' significantly.
that's all i know. anyone here from john henry and the detonations camp. i know he recently sold his lower 9th house and has been living at the spellcaster.
peggy...how much canadian club you got left?
luv
Chad
Matt Muscle:

Quintron is in Virginia...
talked to him a few days ago...
peg:

Chad /canadien club=gone how are you all there?
The Driver:

Peg - Rob in Toronto, here - relieved to hear you and Dan got out ok. Alex? of course he'd stay...no one tells Alex what to do! George R. is kinda on my mind - I think of him in the Dome with his ma, sharing snacks with street crazies, gesticulating at the roof and just generally being such a pain in the ass that they turf him out...
Womb Raider:

Jason text messaged me, they got through it.. skylight got ripped off the house and roof partially gone.. his apt is.... wet.

saw some pictures on nola.com of magazine st. near cadiz, neighborhood looks pretty trashed but no flooding, hope rocks off is okay, looked like a ton of wind damage around there.

treme is supposed to be one of the badly damaged neighborhoods for some reason, I guess the pumping station couldn't handle it or something. I haven't heard much about my neighborhood. I assume there was some flooding, not sure how much. A levee on the 17th st canal broke and flooded lakeview, then the water went down robert e. lee and into bayou st. john, which overflowed its banks.

they're saying no electricity for 1-2 months... the city is going to be a total warzone. I should probably buy a gun.
rocknrollnurse:

I know what happens at hospitals during a disaster..you don't get to go off duty..that what's not hot about being a rocknroll nurse for real..but my question is..what happens to the zoo animals?...did they get to evacuate?
Whiskey Bent:

OMG. They just showed the first chopper images on Fox of some 'neighborhood' covered in water as far as you can see in any direction, but didn't say what part of town....

Glad to hear J&B are doing as OK as they can, thanks for sharing, Chris!

But those images are nasty-bad-flooding..almost to the roof-tops...
fierydrunk:

Yeah, it looks scary as hell. I heard those flooding shots were of Treme and Lower 9th Ward.

We're still moving there. A flooded NOLA still kicks some PDX ass.
Matt Muscle:

yep...i'll second that fierydrunk...
Portland sucks some cock and i was
just planning on going home till this happened...
at least the construction industry will be flying high
when i get there.
arman:

it isn't mardis gras, arman!

it was for the hurricane!

just out of curiosity i tried calling sam yesterday, but got the ol' 'all circuits are busy'. hope they're ok.
stephmeow:

Hey Peg, I am so glad to hear ya'll are ok. We are good hear other than being worried sick. From the pictures I have been looking at Alex's house should be flooded. I hope he went to higher ground that numbskull. I think EVERY neighborhood is flooded except for Canal Street and some Uptown. I have been trying to text J&B to let them know the levee is breached and water has been rising, even into downtown hotels, but I cannot get a signal in "the roost." I want them to keep an eye out for water rising if another levee goes. Could someone try and get that message to them. Do they have a battery-operated radio or tv? Sam- you live in NOLA...why don't you already have a gun?
Whiskey Bent:

Sweetheart...if J&B did have a signal at all the there is surely no charge. It appears there's no way to stop the water either or get rid of it...

Is 10 east AND west underwater??
Is what's left of Katrina hitting Memphis area yet?

It's really difficult for me to do anything thinking about this mess!
This is just so sad…someone said it right, it’s like watching a train wreck in slow motion.

Steph, what area of town is Rocks Off?
stephmeow:

I still have a NOLA cell number and the only messages I can get are text. A friend told me she got a text Mess. from Blythe yesterday after the storm. Your prob. right about the charge.

Rocks Off is Uptown, not too far from J&B. I hope Colby got all the records off of the floor!
Colby, any word? I know Rami (Ballzack) is still there and says he saw people looting yesterday, but that Uptown did not look flooded. I am just worried about further breaks.
Jeezus. I have got to stop watching the news and go to school.
Whiskey Bent:

I am just worried about further breaks.
Jeezus. I have got to stop watching the news.

Ditto.
Send the Goner Helicopter now!
Alisa:

What was left came through Memphis last night. Half the city and county schools were closed today with power outages, my stepdad's house has a tree on it, but all in all it wasn't that bad. I think it was worse out in Bartlett.
I was surprised that we had damage at all, as my house is always the first to lose power, and I have it this morning.

Thanks for all the info on the board. I've had people from down that way calling me all morning wanting to know what's going on. I've been able to tell them what's been reported here, and they've been grateful for any little bit of news.
AndreaH:

So . . . did Louie and Art evacuate??

What about Kirsch? Does anyone talk to him anymore? Where is he?

Anyone know Rich Speigel or Mark Williams? Are they okay?

I'm sure there's other folks I can't think of . . . I'm glad to hear the folks who have checked in are okay whether they rode it out or evacuated. It's only been 10 years since I lived there.

Oh, and I second the person's question about the zoo. I'm wondering if Antoine and the komodo dragon are running loose in the park.

Looting begins in New Orleans
8/30/2005, 11:47 a.m. CT
By ALLEN G. BREED
The Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? With much of the city emptied by Hurricane Katrina, some opportunists took advantage of the situation by looting stores.

At a Walgreen's drug store in the French Quarter, people were running out with grocery baskets and coolers full of soft drinks, chips and diapers.

When police finally showed up, a young boy stood in the door screaming, "86! 86!" ? the radio code for police ? and the crowd scattered.

Denise Bollinger, a tourist from Philadelphia, stood outside and snapped pictures in amazement.

"It's downtown Baghdad," the housewife said. "It's insane. I've wanted to come here for 10 years. I thought this was a sophisticated city. I guess not."

Around the corner on Canal Street, the main thoroughfare in the central business district, people sloshed headlong through hip-deep water as looters ripped open the steel gates on the front of several clothing and jewelry stores.

One man, who had about 10 pairs of jeans draped over his left arm, was asked if he was salvaging things from his store.

"No," the man shouted, "that's EVERYBODY'S store."

Looters filled industrial-sized garbage cans with clothing and jewelry and floated them down the street on bits of plywood and insulation as National Guard lumbered by.

Mike Franklin stood on the trolley tracks and watched the spectacle unfold.

"To be honest with you, people who are oppressed all their lives, man, it's an opportunity to get back at society," he said.

Looking to donate to any relief efforts, I'm thinking of the Red Cross, but is there a local organization that might be more effective in helping folks?

I'm thinking for NOLA, Biloxi, or wherever in the vicinity, though of course who knows if a local agency could even deal with getting money right now.
kermitthefrog:

unless i'm mistaken, martial law gives the national guard the ok to shoot looters. which is fine with me.
fierydrunk:

Red Cross is great and likely the most efficient agency at this stage of things. I am not sure where you live but you can usually contact Red Cross or United Way in your town and ask what agencies are mounting up to provide relief services and what the best way to help would be.
AndreaH:

Just FYI, Boonparn posted a comment to Louie's Myspace profile Sunday afternoon that indicates they "parted ways" sometime that day. So, it's possible Louie left the city.

I'd say go with Red Cross or United Way for donations. . . I don't know if the local agencies have an HQ right now (the Times-Picayune evacuated their building this morning), and I'm 1500 miles away so that's what I'm gonna do is donate to the Red Cross.
barrygoubler:

my mom's house is probably gone; we dunno for sure til she gets word from her town's mayor.
i know paul's family got out, but the lines are down; hoping their houses are ok.
Congrats, Looters, you just drove what little remains of Nola's economy right out of the city...hope you enjoy the miles-long walk to the last open supermarket in town after this, but hey, you "got back at Society", right? Fucking Morons.
anyone moving up to Chi. after this, lemmie know if i can help out with the move: bgoubler@yahoo.com
AndreaH:

my mom's house is probably gone; we dunno for sure til she gets word from her town's mayor.
i know paul's family got out, but the lines are down; hoping their houses are ok.

Shit, I'm sorry to hear that. I'm glad your family and Paul's are okay.

I guess we won't know anything else for a while, since no one will have electricity and cell phones do need to be recharged.

Same goes with anyone wanting to move to Boston. . . It's fucking expensive but you'd get a warm welcome. We don't have any good crawfish though.
Womb Raider:

To everyone reading, this is Chris Martel.

Every piece of information I have suggests that our house is flooded up to the roof by now, meaning everything Lilli and I have is a goner. So, whatever. Jason just left a message on my voicemail saying he rode a bike up Napolean and the water was waist deep going towards fountainbleau. Mid City and Lakeview are completely submerged.

we're all just sticking it out in memphis. don't really know what else to do at this point. Lilli is probably going to fly to Seattle to hang with her family for a few months, her job in New Orleans is not going to be there. If anyone can score her a bartending gig or something there, lemme know. don't know what else to say at this point, besides FUCK.
bazooka joe:

Damn guys I'm really sorry. Chris/ Sam/ Katherine if you can make it up here (I know we aren't vactioning there now) lemme know. We'd love to have you.
sixteene:

chris i'm so sorry to hear about your house. as joe said you are all welcome at our place anytime.
Jack Stands:

Damn, Chris. That's horrible. St. Jude needed some System and LAN admins, last I checked (if you're gonna be stuck here awhile).
kosta:

my thoughts are with all of you NOLA folk through all of this. my condolences or whatever you say in a natural disaster. good god.
Mark Beef:

"It's downtown Baghdad," the housewife said. "It's insane. I've wanted to come here for 10 years. I thought this was a sophisticated city. I guess not."

like any city, when something of this magnitude happens, is gonna stay "sophisticated" and none of it's citizens will possibly break some laws

she should have gone to Branson, Mo instead
fierydrunk:

Unreal. What are people saying about how long it will take for the water to go down? If this can be any consolation, when I was a kid our house on the Spring River (built in the early 1910's) was completely flooded out when the Spring went all the way up the bluff, past the homes and to the highway. I think it was at least a week before all the water went down, but when we went back, even though the old steel suspension bridge had been washed away, along with several of the "Rio Vista Mansions" (our house was considered a shack)...the little cabin remained. We even salvaged all of our quilts, dishes and most of the old furniture. We even found our canoe. It still is standing today. So don't give up all hope on your New Orleans.
The Troll:

Damn

Best wishes to all you folks
AndreaH:

Damn. Fuck. Slide #3 horrified me the most.

Chris -- I'm sorry to hear about your home. I've read your blog, and I'm glad you made the decision to leave. I hope something good (whatever that is) can come out of this for you.

red state blues:

Martel. Talk to Joe Pestilence about the bartending gig or I can give you a few other names later.

We've had people coming into the kennel all day with horror stories.

Can we get a head count? Where's everybody at.
AndreaH:

This is nuts:

Jeff Parish President. Residents will probably be allowed back in town in a week, with identification only, but only to get essentials and clothing. You will then be asked to leave and not come back for one month.

Where is everyone gonna go?

Okay, I'm gonna stop posting so people can check in and i'm not clogging up the board.
Alisa:

Just heard on CNN (press conference with the Governer) that she is planning to evacuate the entire city...
Vonborsig:

Hey , I have some clothes and a couple of pairs of shoes that I've never worn if anyone needs stuff like that. I would be more than happy to send it to a Goner rather that give them to the Goodwill. Let me know if anyone needs such and I will let you know what I have and the sizes. cbarr@humana.com
fierydrunk:

Let Katherine know that I'll mail her & Sam stuff if they need it. My regular size clothes would likely be maternity for her! We aren't doing well right now but we always have extra stuff around if needed.

Womb Raider:

Lacey in all honesty I don't think anyone knows a reasonable timeline right now. this is really a one of a kind disaster that people have no experience handling, there is no previous precedent for it. and there is so much destruction, not just in new orleans, that resources are going to be spread very thin trying to get things running again. will new orleans recover? yes but it will take YEARS. and I think a month or two is probably a reasonable guess for people going back home.

AlPo:

My sympathies with you all...went through one hurricane last year.

WR is correct on the time frame. The dikes will require barging in fill for repair. Power will likely have to be cabled in temporarily to get the pumps going.

According to nola.com, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin estimated Tuesday it would take as long as two weeks to clear out the floodwaters once the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers fixes the levees.

Pumps do about 2 feet per day when they are all running.

In the meantime, if anyone has thoughts about setting up a relief fund for displaced Goners, count me in.

My heart goes out to you NOLA folks. I've got a bunch non-Goner pals down there, and I can't get in touch with anybody. Several friends are holed up in MT. Herman, but I can't get through to them either.

I'd like to vollunteer to help people dig out and salvage anything not destroyed. I bet if a bunch of people from all over the South helped out, the turnaround time on rebuilding could be cut down from current estimates. There is a lot of love for NOLA & it's people, and I hope we have a chance to show it in a meaningful way. In the meantime, I'm donating $$$ to disaster relief, and I encourage anybody else on here that can afford it to do the same.

I talked to Adele, she said she talked to Jessica and Blythe and told them how to get out. Twin Span gone so they, I think are going to try and make it to the River Bridge and go towards the West Bank and up 90 that way. Adele said she gave them directions. They have my number and Adele's (they are hold up in a bayou fish camp w/ Jay, Skwirl, Suzy, Ian, and maybe some others in Opelousas, LA) Adele also told them they could break into Suzy's parents' house to get supplies. Everyone keep them in your thoughts that they get through ok, water is rising, and I don't think they realized that until today sometime, no t.v. We called back to make sure they were gone and no one answered. I hope to god they left already. Mayor Nagin just said pumps are failing even more and 10-15' of water will be uptown next.

black oak arkansas:

I was watching Nightline and it said how NO is such an American place and in the background was a big Hooters sign! How about all those convicts who are taking people hostage? That's some crazy shit! The footage on tv reminds me of a George A. Romero "Dead" film or those shows of wrecked Venice from Dogtown and Z-Boys. My heart goes out to all those going through this disaster. On tv they said it's the worst natural disaster in U.S. history. Goddamn. I wish I could do something to help but being on the west coast there's not really any way except donate a few bones to charity. The dead bodies/critters/sewage/disease factor from all of this is insane. I heard on Nightline that house underwater for more than 12 hours are pretty much worthless and have to be gutted 'cuz all the boards, etc. start to rot.

I wonder if NO is gone forever or if it's gonna drain out. Guess only time will tell. And think of all those great record collections lost. Geez... That's the real tragedy!!! Just kidding. Take care east coasters!!

Thnx Goner & Memphis. Shannon G. if you read this or if someone knows how to get in touch with her, this is Katie Caballero and me & Jeff are safe & sound near Taylorsville with Angela's folks. This is as far as we could get en route to Memphis-- no gasoline available south of Jackson, most roads are gone. We're on a generator here, but no phones or cell but I can rec. text - 214-277-9963. Lower Garden is fucked, Shan. I'm so sorry - I hope eveyone got out allright. I got thru to my folks, I'm Dallas bound. Anyone have updates on the condiditon of I10 West to Baton Rouge/Lafayette?

THANKS for the updates everybody! Glad to hear most Goners and extended family are accounted for...

has anyone heard from those in Jackson? (Marsh, Daphne, Mike, or anyone else) the news I get here in Houston doesn't talk about the damage in Jackson.

I have been watching/listening to this Jackson streaming live news....most are out of power and water too....

Alex:

I'm so sorry to hear about this, every one. Any chance of setting up some sort of benefit show for you guys ?

I think benefit shows would be great. One each in Chicago, Memphis, Portland, Austin, NY, etc. Wherever there's a concentration of Goners. Setting a relief fund at US Bank or somewhere might also be a good idea.

I know 3 people that decided to ride it out. One of them in Bucktown, about 2 blocks from Lake Pontchartrain, and two others in Metairie. No phone service at all. I can't get even any cell service into the country areas south of Mccomb, Miss either.

For anybody still wandering about, I have a spare bedroom in the Memphis suburbs. If you don't have anything pending down there, please consider staying here or wherever you are, at least for awhile. Get setup with a job and a pad. It might be months before things dry up enough down there for you to inspect the damage, let alone get back to the daily grind.

I may try to set one up in Boston. I'm talking to a few local bands and venues. There's some Goner folk up here too, and we've had a few people defect to Memphis and New Orleans.

Here's an article that lists charities contributing to the relief fund:

I also heard Habitat for Humanity is contributing but they're not on the list.

Hey, all. I posted this last night on another thread, but, I wanted to let you know quite a few New Orleans folk made it up to the Buccaneer to see the impromptu Royal Pendletons. Memphis came out in droves to fill the place and show general support. This wasn't a benefit, it was a beer bust. Seemed to me like it was kind of a "This is all horrible, but can we take a rock n' roll break for a second" thing. I was glad to meet quite a few of these folk, and hope everybody had a great time and had a moment to distract from their constant worry.
Joe Pestilence:

Mary Helen, i haven't talked to any of the Pascagoulans yet but my old friend Vince is in Austin and might have information in that regard.

I'd also like to take time to apologize for any seemingly flip remarks i might've made on this thread and else where regarding this. I wasn't trying to make fun of the situation,i was just attempting to bring a little levity to things w/out really knowing exactly how fucked up things were. I haven't seen much TV coverage because i don't have a TV right now,but it's definitely sinking in how fucked everyone down there is. State of Alabama Quarters Recall

Hang on to any of the new State of Alabama quarters. If you have them, they may be worth much more than 25 cents.

The U.S. Treasury has announced that it is recalling all of the Alabama quarters that are part of its program featuring quarters from each state.

"We are recalling all the new Alabama quarters that were recently issued," Treasury Undersecretary Jack Shackleford stated. "This action is being taken after numerous reports that the new quarters will not work in parking meters, toll booths, vending machines, pay phones, or other coin-operated devices."

The quarters were issued in the order in which the various states joined the U.S. and have been a tremendous success among coin collectors worldwide.

"The problem stemmed from the unique design of the Alabama quarter, which was created by an Auburn University graduate," Shackleford said.

"Apparently, the duct tape holding the two dimes and the nickel together keeps jamming the coin-operated devices."

Good news. "w" has decided to put away his golf clubs and travel to the GulfCoast for some photo ops. Everything is going to be fine.

I went down to Florida City after Andrew hit and help my uncle get all his stuff . We went to one of many tent cities to get food and supplies; and guess who's black bulletproof caravan of gun tottin' guards interrupted everybody's misery? Dan Quayle and his idiot son's were gettin' in on the action.
"Wow!!! We've never seen damage like this before."
Go back to the cornfields of Indiana, ya' dumb-fuck!!!!!!!!!!!

It looks like everybody waited till the last minute to grab their cherished items and leave. Sounds like it even caught the peeps in South Florida off guard. "We didn't know it was going to be this bad." Have they forgotten already on how bad Andrew was?

This is really bad. Many people who think that they are insured are quickly finding out that they are not. Some of these companies have already skipped town. Allstate dropped me after a God-Damned hail storm hit back in '92? Not even a Hurricane. I had 3 policies and they still dropped me. I will never get Allstate again. i think what about the Red Cross or Salvation Army to receive funds from a benefit?

i think "goner-specific donations" was the key.
fierydrunk:

That is what I was wondering--if we set up these shows for benefits, we need to make them legit so that people trust the $$$$ goes to the right place. Should we contact the Red Cross and see how to go about it? Do we need to register with an aid service to make it legitimate? I'd like to do something within the next few weeks here in PDX and I think it is really possible to get a lot of money raised. Any ideas on how to really make it a legitimate benefit? I'd like the money to go to some sort of general fund.
Windy:

I can only shake my head at all this. I don't know most of you kids on here, but my couch is mighty comfy. I'm in Memphis. E-mail me through the site if any of the displaced need a place to crash.
Theresa K:

what about the Red Cross or Salvation Army to receive funds from a benefit? They're out there right now trying to get food and water to people.

if you want specific people to reap the benefits, you have to specifically ear mark them. if there is a local charity that aids disasters, they can act as a fiscal agent for your intended recipients (fed. rules apply) and you can provide a list or a criteria for disbursement. i believe red cross and salvation army are helpful, but perhaps not to whom you want to receive the money
michael bateman:

I think I'll apply for a job at the House of Mews.
fierydrunk:

Yeah, you could just curl up in the dresser drawers with all the sweet kitty cats.

I don't know what is wrong with me but now that NOLA is cut off for me to move next August (I knwo things will be better then, but...) I almost wanna move home. Am I crazy?
Joe:

I've done benefit shows in the past, and being "informal" hasn't ever hurt anyone. This is why I suggested Goner Records act as our Red Cross, a sort of rock + roll relief center. Eric is geographically close to all of this, and probably knows the most people. If we could send money there, or set up a bank account in Goner's name for this, I think it do more good than just sending our dough to the Salvation Army. I think if we tell people what we're raising money for, and they see we're serious by coming to the shows, they'll trust us to get the money to the right people.

Eric, what are your thoughts on (and abilities/willingness to handle) all of this?
joe danger:

i would be happy sending it to goner and letting eric distrubute the $. i mean, hopefully people from all over will be donating to the red cross and salvation army, but me, i'm looking out for my friends and the people i've met. if i throw a benifit show and we make $100/$200 dollars, i want to think all my broke ass friends who just lost every fucking thing they own will get a little support from this supposed community we've created. maybe they're not the people who need it most, but looks like everybody's got it pretty bad right now. i mean, everybody just lost thier home, job, etc in one swoop.

anybody down there have any suggestions?
jahna:

The biggest challenge right now is finding non-profit willing to act as a fiscal conduit to distribute funds *directly* to the rock and roll folks. Not that I don't think the greater community also needs help, but we can make a greater impact (more $$ per person) if we focus on a smaller group of people. So, I'm waiting to hear back from the Sweet Relief
Musicians Foundation and WFMU's station manager, Ken Freedman. Ken said that they will promote the heck out of the event at the station, at the very least. (He's also very concerned about the public radio station folks who he knew down there. If you're out there, please check in with him.) I also asked my main client. (I'm a non-profit consultant - I raise
$$ and assist non-profits with marketing and design for a living - not a profitable career, but a satisfying one) She was a little leery of getting involved, but very supportive of my taking time from my current deadlines for her to do this.

I can't even get through via telephone or web to the Red Cross at all. I'm glad they are so busy - that's a good sign that the public has been mobilized to help. I will also talk to them about setting up a specific account for this purpose. I also want to collect clothes, food, etc. to donate to them as part of the benefit.

I'll keep you all posted as I pull the event together.
Joe:

Also- we should be thinking in terms outside of just money. Times are tight for a lot of us right now, and not all of can spare $10 or $20... A place to send clothes, household items, etc. would be good.
fierydrunk:

I suppose I don't think it is fair to Eric to place him in that responsibility. It isn't that I don't trust ya, but that is the problem. You are a trustworthy guy with a lot to do and being the king of the hurricane benefit dole is something I think you should agree to do, not be forced into doing.
Joe:

I agree...

No one should be forced into taking on what will be a sizeable burden... It was just what sprang to mind.
lawdy clawdy:

want to think all my broke ass friends who just lost every fucking thing they own will get a little support from this supposed community we've created
yeah, if you can't help everyone, help the people who would (hopefully) do it for you as well....not just any asshole.
MITCH CUMSTEIN:

why doesnt someone just set up a NOLA ROCKNROLL RELIEF FUND and open up a paypal account. that way GONERS can contribute from all over the globe. i know paypal sucks, but its an easy way to collect funds and dole it out to specific NOLA Goners
jahna:

Joe Danger said:

I agree 100%!!! Just to be clear - that's why I am going to need help to locate folks and get the $$ to them.
Theresa K:

what jahna said about fiscal agents
fed rules are really strict on what agencies can act as $$ conduits. its a tax problem for them if they give money to causes that are not specifically outlined in their 501c3 charter

i tried sweet relief for something recently, and they had strict guidelines about health insurance/health problems. couldn't even use them to get money to mike smith.

if the red cross or salvation army or unlikely FEMA agrees to a pot of money for our intended recipients, that is the way to go.

otherwise... fuck it.... use western union or something and send money directly to your pals.

i think some group should needle western union to waive their exhorbitant money-sending fees in light of this. i believe they may have done so for the tsunami relief action.
Jack Stands:

Hey, guys. Not to be the asshole in the ointment, but I've done a few of these things before, too. First you should all be saluted for trying to bring light to a shity situation; that being said, to organize, you need to:
1. Identify beneficiaries (is it just NOLA, the entire region)
2. Recipients need to have a way to be identified as "Goner" (this sounds vague, but just thrrowing it out there)
3. Even distribution to all affected "Goners", or first come first serve asking for specific amounts...

Again, you should all be applauded, and I would definitely sink some cash to help, but these are some of the obstacles. That's all. Keep workin' on it!
fierydrunk:

That is why someone needs to be responsible in being the executor of the fund. Any takers? I agree that a Paypal account is a good idea, but there needs to be an agreement on how it will be distributed etc.
Joe:

1. Identify beneficiaries (is it just NOLA, the entire region)

I think it should be any Goner affected by Katrina.

2. Recipients need to have a way to be identified as "Goner" (this sounds vague, but just thrrowing it out there)

Uhh, this is harder. Any suggestions?

3. Even distribution to all affected "Goners", or first come first serve asking for specific amounts

Even distro sounds good, the drawback being we'd have to wait for most of the $$ to come in before we start handing it out... Again, any other suggestions?
Theresa K:

hey jack stands.... i spnt months and months after 9/11 trying to get my relief from FEMA and you list some salient points. as w/ 9/11, the NOLA hurricane victims will not have their paperwork, etc. on them that FEMA is gonna need in order to process them. it will be a hardship just trying to get gov't relief. and they could use our trickling in 100's while they wait for their gov't 1,000's

take heed of those 3 points. whoever volunteers to take on the admin.... bless you

anyone know any silicon valley do-gooders who might want to schmooze paypal into giving free (as in paypal takes no cut) accounts to katrina victims so that their friends can send donations that way? i think it would be great for their image, they'd probably get a bit of a tax break... and its the right thing to do.

i think anything that can be done to facilitate getting money into people's pockets with little to no hassle must be done. i'm going to try to look into this, actually... had a retarded brainstorm while i was putting out a work fire

meantime..... i suppose it wouldn't hurt, if you are a katrina-victimized, displaced NOLA goner, and you have a paypal account.... perhaps you could start an item where you all could list your paypal ID's that people can start sending $$ to if they are so inclined.

am i retarded about this? someone i know once collected $1500 for an emergency overnight that way.

whoever signs up to handle disbursement of funds is taking on a fiduciary duty that brings massive work and headaches with it, not to mention accountability on a federal level (IRS primarily). what do you expect eric and zac are gonna do if someone sends a check for $20 grand? unless proper paperwork is in place, they alone will get hit for the tax liability.

seriously people..... until conduits emerge where you have an actual organization that's collecting the money, but you really really feel like giving NOW - perhaps you should consider putting money into people's paypal accounts, using western union or getting postal money orders and sending them to where ever your friends are holed up.

there's a lot of i's to dot and t's to cross in the money-disbursing game. i know everyone means well, but there will be much confusion for days to follow. you can help people directly and immediately.... even if its buying them lunch, sending them cash, clothing....

but mostly..... please don't volunteer someone for a task that trained professionals don't even like to do.

if you feel like you really want to do something to help eventually when funds have been collected and have a conduit.... put together a list of known people in need, their presumed or approximate whereabouts, phone numbers or emails if you have em. that will always be useful and put this effort one step ahead when disbursement can begin

over and out in my lawyer hat.
Mark Beef:

or send it to me and I will make sure it is spent properly, I don't know how much longer I can watch this footage on TV
red state blues:

Who's sending a check for twenty grand?

You either Beef.

Theresa K:

Most of us are concerned with the well being of people we know.

and i'm not?

red state blues: why don't you volunteer to be the center of collecting, holding and disbursing donations, then? and then tell me at the end of the year how you're gonna file your taxes and account for those monies?

if eric and zac pipe in and announce they will gladly turn their business from a record store and label into a collecting/holding/disbursement center for charitable donations of cash, i will gladly kiss your ass in public.

AND i'll set up the Goner 501c3 paperwork for free.... although it will take YEARS for the IRS to recognize them as such, if ever...and in the interim eric and zac will pay out the nose for the pleasure of helping people at your behest.... but hey...i'm just an overly dramatic ass who's done this sort of thing before
Amber:

Hi, this is Brad X's wife. We have two rooms available in our house. I know it is way up in Manitowoc Wisconsin but I am willing to pay for up to four or so people to take the Greyhound bus here from any hub. The bus comes dirrectly to our city. We have plenty of food. We have only one extra queen size bed right now but are able to get more if needed. There are plenty of job opportunities here, colleges, etc. If anyone is interested, please e-mail at braddaugs at yahoo dot com or call 920-242-2494. Don't worry about completing the call, hang up, and I'll call back. If there is anything else we can do, please let us know, also children are not a problem.

I wish you Orleans Goners and your friends all the best of luck.
Sorry this is happening.
My girlfriend and I would offer to put someone up for a bit but it'd mean a Vegas vacation and then you'd really run out of money.
Crystal Lake:

This is so terrible... I'm so, so sorry for all of you who've lost so much these last few days. Even just reading this stuff from far away this is heartbreaking. I'm not a pray-er, but I'm hoping that all of you and your loved ones come out of this safely. I wish I could do more to help, but the reality is that postage from Canada (to send doubles of records/CDs, clothes/shoes I've got set aside for the thrift shop, etc) costs more than just donating the couple of our $5 hockey bills I can afford. I doubt anyone would take me up on it, but if anyone wants a vacation in the Great White North, e-mail me through here.

Records are just things, but they're things that make you happy when everything is sucking hard. I did just buy a pack of blank cassettes... anyone want a mixtape?
red state blues:

I don't know what to say. I feel like you just want to argue.

I think we're talking about two different things. I thought this was about small benefits and donations to help our fellow goners. To make sure that the people we gossip with all day about rock'nroll, who were affected by this, have a goddamn place to live. Memphis alone helped T.Money in his time of need. That would probably make Scott Rogers the book keeper huh.

I don't understand any of your fancy elay 501c3 talk. I'm going to stop talking to you now.

Money is tight for me right now, but to Louie, Martel, Bateman, and other displaced goners. I barely know you guys in the real world, but if you need anything, let me know.

Punk turns 39 is more like it.
VOICE OF REASON:

CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG?!?!
Theresa K:

because I can't send red state blues a private message thru the board, chad's gonna have to skip over this since he thinks i'm full of shit.

Punk turns 39 is more like it.

I don't find that an insult, if that's what you were aiming for. For the record, I am 48, and I've earned every gray hair on my head the hard way.

For the record, I am also educated as a lawyer and my ears prick up when people are put at risk, even by well meaning, probably on-a-lark commentary. Maybe you think its crap, but I don't care. Being hated on is an occupational hazard. There's a class you take right after Cantankerous Asshole 101; its Thick Skinned Jerk-off 101.

I did not and do not want to argue, but instead had always offered information about charitable contributions and disbursements vis a vis the process by which the law proscribes them. Lots of people consider it advice.

If I didn't know better, I'd think you were trying to impugn my integrity by saying that I'm just here to debate you and that I don't care about the people who have been affected. But you're just full of frustration, aren't you?

Further, for the record, I am working with people here in NYC to help raise money in two folds for people put out by Katrina who really need it - yes. the individuals that we gossip about all day.... small direct donations such as the door money from small local shows, raffles at them, etc that people in need can receive and use immediately, as well as courting the large gifts for our "music community" from donors who do have the capacity to give large contributions.

One of those people is Jahna, who posted info above, which seemed to go largely ignored since what she wrote was either repeated as though it were new info, or questions were raised that she had already addressed. Whatever... no big deal. She is by trade, a fund raiser for non profits and her advice and insight are relevant.

She's doing the heavy lifting in organizing the gig in NYC and leveraging her fund raising experience in securing a fiscal agent to be the conduit for donations. I am doing the icky schmoozing with companies like Paypal and Western Union to lobby for and negotiate fee waivers for a whole class of customer - the NOLA Katrina victim, leveraging my professional experience on getting things for musicians for free. Only this time, the musicians are actually in need.

Yeah red state blues- we are talking about two things - and they are two different legs on a jackass. But at the end of the day you wanna get people money, so do I.

Most people know this - but since you feign ignorance: "Fancy elay 501c3" is the tax designation for an organization that does charitable work. It is exempt from income tax and is allowed to take in money/hold money/distribute money. Its not fancy talk. What you don't know CAN expose you to liability. The Red Cross, Salvation Army, Sweet Relief, etc. are all organized as 501c3's. They would not be allowed to accomplish their financial relief work unless they were so organized.

You help your way, I help mine. Taking up donations for one's friends is one thing.... we all pass the hat all the time. Lend money, give it away, whatever. However... this disastrous tragedy will yield an outpouring of contributions and it will grow beyond the simple passing the hat phase where one guy holds a few hundred dollars and takes it to the friend in need. Let us hope so at any rate.

Any time I've been to NOLA everyone's been so cool, so I'm glad to see so many people I've met are alive, at least. Any news on the guys from the Paul Bearers, or Lynn Smith, or Marvin, or Pasta?

I'm in Myrtle Beach, SC and have been trying hard as shit to get in touch with my Uncle down in Pascagoula. No luck there, pretty stressed out over everything. I've been in touch with some people in jackson, everyone seems to be alright, just very uncomfortable due to power outages and downed trees. My heart goes out to everyone from Nola and the coast. Good luck.

Oh! I WORK for the Salvation Army and we we're overwhelmed with "donations" when the Tsunami hit. We had to explain that donating clothes for the victims was a commendable effort but what they need is money. It's easier to wire cash to a closer location where they can buy what they need than it is to fill up trucks/planes with used tossed aways. For this though, we have gotten nothing and no one has shown concern for those effected down there...Assholes. Joe, you're an awesome dude to try to do so. The powers that be take donations (and their cut) seriously. If it were so easy to set up donations, Jim Baker would be back in business trying to tell you why Jesus needs a water park. Good effort to try, my man. Well done for spending the time.

In spite of the sniping wrought by anxious-ness (I have no idea if that is a word) previous in this post, 501c3 is the hurdle. Make one. Be the dude/dudette. It is a huge responsibility, if not liability.

I wish receiving donations were so easy these days. You're better off going through the neighborhood, collecting cash in a coffee can, and writing it all into a check to another charity these days.

Sad, but how it works.
Theresa, thanks for trying to help out. Keep it up in your parts (southern for New York).

Musicians missing.....anyone heard from Alex yet?

see below

Before NBC, MTV, or anyone else puts on a telethon to help victims of Hurricane Katrina, they might want to explore some ancillary issues. To wit: New Orleans is a city famous for its famous musicians, but many of them are missing. Missing with a capital M.

To begin with, one of the city’s most important legends, Antoine “Fats” Domino, has not been heard from since Monday afternoon. Domino’s rollicking boogie-woogie piano and deep soul voice are not only part of the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame but responsible for dozens of hits like “Blue Monday,” “Ain’t That a Shame,” “Blueberry Hill” and “I’m Walking (Yes, Indeed, I’m Talking).”

Domino, 76, lives with his wife Rosemary and daughter in a three story pink-roofed house in New Orleans’ 9th ward, which is now underwater. On Monday afternoon, Domino told his manager, Al Embry of Nashville, that he would “ride out the storm” at home. Embry is now frantic.

Calls have been made to Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco’s office and to various police officials and though there’s lots of sympathetic response, the whereabouts of Domino and his family remain a mystery.

In the meantime, another important Louisiana musician who probably hasn’t been asked to be in any telethons is the also legendary Allen Toussaint. Another Rock Hall member, Toussaint wrote Patti Labelle’s hit “Lady Marmalade” and Dr. John’s “Right Place, Wrong Time.” His arrangements and orchestrations for hundreds of hit records, including his own instrumentals “Whipped Cream” and “Java” are American staples. (He also arranged Paul Simon’s hit, “Kodachrome.”)

Last night, Toussaint was one of the 25,000 people holed up at the New Orleans Superdome hoping to get on a bus for Houston’s Astrodome. I know this because he got a message out to his daughter, who relayed to it through friends.

Also not heard from by friends through last night: New Orleans’s “Queen of Soul,” Irma Thomas, who was the original singer of what became the Rolling Stones’ hit, “Time is On My Side.”

Let’s hope and pray it is, because while the Stones roll through the U.S. on their $450-a-ticket tour, Thomas is missing in action. Her club, The Lion’s Den is underwater, as are all the famous music hot spots of the city.

Similarly, friends are looking for Antoinette K-Doe, widow of New Orleans wild performer Ernie K-Doe. The Does have a famous nightspot of their own on N. Claiborne Avenue, called the Mother-in-Law Lounge, in honor of Ernie’s immortal hit, “The Mother-in-Law Song.” Ernie K-Doe, who received a 1998 Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation, died in 2001 at age 65.

Dry and safe, but in not much better shape, is the famous Neville family of New Orleans. Aaron Neville and many members of the family evacuated on Monday to Memphis, where they are now staying in a hotel. But most of the Nevilles’ homes are destroyed, reports their niece and my colleague at “A Current Affair,” Arthel Neville. She went down to her hometown yesterday and called me from a boat that was trying to get near town.

“This isn’t like having two feet of water in your basement,” she said, holding back tears. “Everything is destroyed. I am just so lucky to have been born here and to have had the experience of New Orleans."

She confirmed that there had been rumors of dead bodies floating around her Uncle Aaron’s house yesterday. So far the Nevilles are unannounced to participate in Friday’s TV show.

And still there are plenty of other famous musicians associated with New Orleans who would probably like to be on TV if they’re high and dry. The Marsalis family comes from the city, and they’ve played at most of the well known clubs like Tipitina’s, The Maple Leaf, Preservation Hall and Muddy Waters.

New Orleans is also one of the few cities with a House of Blues. And Jimmy Buffet’s Margharitaville Café chain has a local franchise that is still an attraction. New Orleans’s trademark sounds are Cajun and Zydeco. So far none of the listed benefits have named an act that plays that kind of music
king louie:

I really don't know where RHOADS is !?!? i would like to think he's just hold up in his house waiting for a boat...i saw st. claude street and that's under...i worry about the detonations guys held up at spellcaster too...if they made it through the storm alive. they just need to stay put for a while...hope eric DRH bass player is well too...
Butter:

Hey Bateman, thanks for the info, I fell asleep before I could read it.

possible goner relief solution:

i just spoke to my dad who is an episcopalian priest in arkansas. we can set up for donations to go to his 'discreationary fund' and he can then give the funds to zac & eric or directly to goners in need. donations given this way will even be tax-deductible (i know this goes against eric o's 'tax the churches' stand but what the fuck) -- anyways, i'll call goner later today and see if this is acceptable. we will set up a paypal fund and i can give an address for checks and whatnot.

What about cash donations? Are you getting those? I'm still trying to figure out what "charitable organization" to donate to. My priorites are as follows: help out my peeps who lost everything first, then donate to whatever charitiable organization I think will give most of my donation directly to the people and not spend it on advertising, then help out some of the critters thru HSUS or the AZA, and, when the city is inhabitable again, help the economy by vacationing there again.

A friend of mine up in Boston had his grandma and aunt lose their home in Florida last year, and this year his sister and her family lost their home outside of Biloxi. That sucks ass. They're grateful to be alive.
MITCH CUMSTEIN:

anyone heard from BOBBY CHARLES?

he recorded one record in the early-70's with the BAND as his backing band. he wrote the song, See Ya Later Alligator, when he was 12 years old.
Whiskey Bent:

Hello? Anti-Christ ‘W’?

You know, just like many, I’ve been watching/listening the news WAAAY too much. At first it was because I was so worried for your safety. Now it’s just plain ‘ole disbelief.

Last night watching the news there was ONE common message from survivors, support staff and reporters ALL saying ONE THING. Where is the RELIEF? It’s THURSDAY and most STILL don’t have WATER! I know it takes a serious organized effort, but WTF?

Tuesday evening (I believe) they were showing how the SS-whatever ‘Iwo- Jima’ and SS-whater ‘Comfort’ (medical supply) ships were being sent in and that they were 100 miles off shore. Where the fuck are they? Those thousands of people standing around waiting to get on buses and whatever are still without WATER in NOLA, Al, Miss! Where the fuck are they?

Mr. Fucking W Asshole had a REAL opportunity to SHINE! And he appeared on the news AGAIN this morning saying help is on the way and talking MOSTLY about the impending energy crisis. What about the crisis AT HAND you fuck?. Texas, Ark, Florida, etc have sent more relief than the federal govt.

Our own fucking president can’t handle a catastrophe 500 miles from his own ranch? And he’s handling a war ion a other country?

I am livid! Sorry for the rambling message! But if there was MORE of a PRESENCE in fucking NOLA right now, those (bad) desperate people wouldn’t be becoming MORE and MORE of a danger by hindering rescue efforts! I am SO angry!!
MITCH CUMSTEIN:

funny how he rushes to iraq to distruct the country within 24 hours of his "instruction to go in" - but says now that troops and aid will take a few days to reach the gulf coast. what about large planes dropping shit in like they do in the middle east?

i hate to sound like a conspiracy type of person, but our gov't is at an all-time low and they have us at their mercy. they're making it difficult for those people to obtain aid in this situation. it's sad. those states are surrounded by state after state full of supplies, police, military, medical aid etc. why do they have to wait for ships to make it around florida? it makes zero sense.

funny thing too....al of the shit going on within the gov't is now going to be buried by this disaster. the carl rove/cia thing is now swept under the rug, as is everyother blunder the bush administration has recently been involved in.....most people cant stand michael moore and his farenheit 9/11 movie...but at least he has the fuckin balls to show the public things that are happening.
MITCH CUMSTEIN:

the entire HOMELAND SECURITY department is bullshit too. if there were a homeland security department, there would have been a rapid response team sent in immediately to quell any looting, carjackings and protect the infastructure of NOLA, Miss and Bama. instead, Bush and his cronnies sit back and take time to decide what to do. also, the gov't probably wont ask for International help on a wide scale, because it makes us look weak.
Whiskey Bent:

All true-my friend.

And White House Spokes-dood is ANNOUNCING at the White House press-conf will do an ‘aerial’ survey TOMORROW! What about the one you did YESTERDAY, you pathetic piece of shit? And spokes-dood is being asked just the thing I bitch about above and he DODGED every single one.

And NOW he says ‘this is not a time to do any finger-pointing’. YEAH; that’s cause they’re ALL pointing to our president! Grrrr! I SO need to turn off the news.
Dwight Gooden:

Garrett:

There's probably already a post on this somewhere, but does anyone have any updates on the condition of Uptown (flooding/looting)? I live a couple of blocks from Rocks Off on Lyons. I stupidly evacuated with a virtually empty car, taking only a pair of jeans, some shorts and a few t-shirts. If there is looting around there, I hope they enjoy all of my records and cds I left behind.

I hope all of the nola goners and their family and friends are okay. It sucks not being able to get info on people who may have stayed behind. I got into Memphis last night with 11 members of my family and my dog. They all lived in St. Bernard which looks just like the video of the 9th ward. It filled up with water over the roofs almost instantly. We're all staying in my cousin's home until we figure out what to do. I'll probably be in Memphis for awhile. If I make it to the Buc one night, chances are I'll be the one wearing the New Bomb Turks shirt since it is about all I have left.

I'm sure whatever way people decide to help it will be much appreciated by those affected.

send all your $ to the goner store and write incare of KLOMB on the check. i'll make shure it get's to the right people...PANZER and CHAD, meet me at EVIL ARMYS house this weekend...
peg:

louie! I was hoping you guys didn't go to miss, but glad you're out. Alex is still missing, I think he probably went to the Quarter, I don't know...... he's a good swimmer...
Whiskey Bent:

Garret. Good to hear you and your family opted to leave. Our buddy here on Goner named 'Colbito' (Colby) works/owns (??) Rocks Off and started this group to help NOLA folks -- many are on there so it would be a good place to ask this question there too:

http://groups.myspace.com/nolarefugees

Colbito returns to Austin this afternoon and I'm sure he'll be happy to share any info he has if you don't get it from someone/somewhere else.

Additionally, he thought he was going on a weekend get-away and brought just enough for that as well.
Preparation X:

We're harboring two NOLA "refugees" and have a little space left for a couple more if anyone gets stuck in Mobile for some crazy reason. Till you folks figure out what to do and can get back on your feet, anyway.

Our hearts go out to all you ninjas. Love Brooke and Neil.
Melva in Milwaukee:

Glad to see everyone is ok. Peg, Jason, Louie and Joe glad to see you made it.

Looking for updates on Brad and Xiomara, Mrs. Goubler, Alex C, Stephanie Stennett, Dale Ashmun, Chris Kirsch......

If you need a place to stay if you are in WI, email me.

If anyone cares, my mom & dad got out on Sunday and are Ruston with my brother. The house in the east is gone..... It sucks being up here in WI and helpless.
Jack Stands:

For any refugees in Memphis:
I just took about 10 LPs up to Goner for anyone that needs to start a new collection. Includes
Chipmunk Punk
Roy Orbison Greatest Hits
Johny Cash on clear orange vinyl asian bootleg
2 Jethro Tulls
Vanity 6 (you know you want it)
others... Yours for the taking

Also left 2 pairs of shorts (one pair made of pot or something).
4 Sonsabitches T-shirts

Another thought occured to me while I was there. Run to any record store and buy up some NOLA music. If you've already got some, buy something for a friend or enemy. That should help, too...
blue collar:

louie, have you heard anything from Gary Loverde?
uncleeddie:

I just heard on NPR that everyone's acting like animals right now. We knew that by the footage and other entries everyone's posted. But I just heard a little girl was raped at the Convention Center shelter.
It's depressing as hell, but think about all behavior we may not have thought about yet.
So sad.
AndreaH:

If anyone cares, my mom & dad got out on Sunday and are Ruston with my brother. The house in the east is gone..... It sucks being up here in WI and helpless.

Melva, I'm really glad to hear that. . . for some reason I forgot your family was in New Orleans and that they were in Bourne, MA (that's where you were from originally, right???).

I was told Tommy Oliver moved to Florida a while ago. I'm still hoping to hear something positive about Kirsch and everyone else. . . I think Barry's mom is fine but isn't sure if her house isn't there.
AndreaH:

I just want to say this is a really fucked-up way to get back in touch with people I lost touch with years ago (in some cases, when I left NOLA in '95). I hope everyone is well.
Melva in Milwaukee:

Andrea,

Yes, we were from MA, but I think after this they will move back to the homestate of Virginia. My sister and niece are also in Ruston.

I'm looking for many people I still am in touch with, but no news. I just saw Alex in WI in July.

It's funny, I've been in Chicago alot lately and have never run into Barry. Good to hear his mom is ok.
Whiskey Bent:

louie, have you heard anything from Gary Loverde?

Yes! Where is Unfriendly?
Alisa:

Is there any need for baby clothes and little boy clothes? Friend just called me and said she had a big box of them. Not sure if any of the Goners in town have need of these...
Jesus H Christ:

They were playin' "Shit City" by Kajun SS here on the radio. Seemed appropriate.

Here's what the radio deejay said on the radio for you enjoyment: "The Kajun SS from New Orleans appropriately enough did a song called Shit City. Um, and uh, I'm sure, I worry about King Louie ya know? What is he doin' down there right now? I bet he's one of the people, now, King Louie is kind of a scumbag, I say that in the most affectionate was possible 'cuz I really do like King Louie but he's also a white person so when he's stealing from the drug store do they call it finding drugs or looting drugs? Yeah, I don't know if you've seen this on the internet but they're makin' a big stink about these photos, there's a photo of a black person up to their chest in water haulin' away a loaf of bread and it's like "this person is looting from the grocery store" and there's another picture of two white people, uh, with groceries and they're like "these people have found groceries from the grocery store, I'm sure they just, were just, sitting out somewhere for them to be found like the Easter bunny, he was just sitting out loaves of bread"".
Joe Pestilence:

Louie, Dean from Les Turdz/Hotcakes put up a message on My Space saying he's visited Dwayne and Jason Turd and that them and their folks are doing OK. He left a couple of numbers,i'm gonna call him and get some more info later.

Melva,i appreciate the concern but i'm in Portland and was there when this shit happened.

Now i'm gonna email some people and see if they write back...
Melva in Milwaukee:

Joe, I hope your family faired out ok.
colbito:

Garrett....no news on the Rocks Off area....trying to get in touch with Pepper (Le Bon Temps/COC/Down)....if anyone can find out anything he can.....Antionne, the Vet across from me, ....well, he's the only non-cop in his family, so he might know some things......

things will get better when the 504 cells start working.....

I'm staying with Sherry, my new guardian angel, for now, although I think I might have a place inAustin lined up(?)

I don't know where Bobby Charles is, but I can assure you his swamp house is gonna be GONE. He is in very poor health and living in the middle of nowhere.

Matty- Kristen Z. is coming into town and will be at the Buc to say bye to New Orleans friends... she's then flying to Austin 4 school. Come up or call her or something if you're not still in Memphis.

Argh! I am to be logged in at all times, Lacey. Don't believe a word she say.

Barry-glad to hear Bernie and your mom are safe!

Just got off the phone with my dad finally. I begged him to go Sunday, he wanted to say behind and protect the house from looters. He thanked me today fro making him go up north. My mom is up in Monroe helping with getting the foster kids what they need. My niece is fine-she's at Daryl's with Roz. What a way to celebrate my birthday.

I called Stephanie's (you remember her?) bro in AL. Waiting for his call back.

I hope the rest of your family is ok. Everyone up here in WI really wants to help. It is amazing.

my girlfriend got this info on one of her nerd-political message boards, who knows how reliable this is. I don't know, maybe the same person who posted there is on here. for what it's worth:

"I can confirm that Alex is missing.

The last anyone spoke to him was on Saturday. Messages were left on his phone Sunday with no reply. We still aren't sure if he decided to ride it out with his sister or if they went to an evacuation center.

I've gotten unconfirmed info that the house was checked and nobody was there, so it looks hopeful that they at least left the house before the hurricane it. But we still don't know anything for sure.

Hoping for the best."

----

"Correction on one point:

His sister is safe and was not with him. Sorry about the bad info. I've had a few phone calls about this and it's hard to keep things straight.

He did get the house boarded up before the storm, and it was his intention to ride it out, but he may have gotten out before the storm or after the storm but before the worst of the flooding. We just don't know for sure and even if he's safe I'm sure he can't call out to let anyone know for now.

If I learn any specifics I'll share them."
The Driver:

For what it's worth the nola.com missing persons board has been useful in verifying the safety of some non-Goner type acquaintences.

Good News New Orleans!

Welfare, unemployment benefits to Katrina victims
Thursday, 9:20 p.m.

Federal welfare and unemployment benefits are being made available to victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The Louisiana Department of Labor announced that federal Disaster Unemployment Assistance will be available to residents or workers in 31 parishes if they can prove they lost their jobs or self-employment income as a result of Katrina.

The Labor Department began accepting claims Thursday at its job centers throughout the state and will continue doing so until a 30-day filing period ends Oct. 30.

To qualify for benefits applicants must have worked or been self-employed in one of the affected parishes, prove that they have lost their main source of income because of the storm and that they do not qualify for regular unemployment insurance from another state. The program will run through March 4, 2006.

Additionally, the state Department of Social Services has received federal permission to establish an emergency food-stamp program for people displaced by the hurricane. Applications are being accepted starting Friday through Sept. 9 at 49 different DSS Office of Family Support offices across the state
TheSinkingSpell:

The personal stories and first hand reports going up around the internet are getting down right terrifying. If you know anyone in town still and you can get in touch with them, PLEASE make sure they formulate a solid plan for escape. People are being killed almost indiscriminately at times. The cops and National Guard there are without evidence of functional leadership and many are turning into death squad thugs themselves. It is confirmed that corpses are everywhere. Things are degenerating VERY quickly and I urge those that remain to flee, but do so safely.

I've been calling Shasta all day, but his phone just rings and his answering machine don't pick up no mo'.

Also, if you know anyone in the Garden District that can check on John Fields' dog at his gf's place (trashy diva store) near Juan's, that'd be great. He was on tour and couldn't get back to his dog. The chick that was watching the dog had to evacuate and did not take Cash (the dog) for whatever reason.

Any body know if that shithead that busted my head open at that Mangina show at the Hi-Ho is dead yet? That big goofy skinhead guy? Can't remember his name. Pretty sure it rhymed with PIG-FUCKER. Anyway, I hope he's been kidnapped and is getting hot meat injections at gun point from a black man named Molly. Fuck you and I piss down your throat.

Please excuse my outburst. Emotions run high these days.

RE: LX

From Jon Auer's wife, Michelle, on the Posies forum:

"OK, I am updating this. The last I had heard when I wrote that first post was that he was fine. So that is why I posted.

That was the last word anyone had in Seattle when I wrote this. After I got home from work, I saw all of these messages, I asked Jon because I started seeing all of this other stuff and got an email. He called Jody for follow up to the conversation from a few days ago and now the word is, chances are he is OK, and that is all we can hope for but NO, no one has talked to him in the last couple of days. It is the same as what everyone was saying, they talked to him after the major storms and he was fine the, but now there has been little to no communication with anyone in those parts since then. I never posted that Jon "spoke to Alex" which I have read somewhere, but that is how this whole grapevine thing goes.

So the "official word" is, the same as what his friend was saying on here. Jody talked to him Monday after the hurricane and no one has been in touch since. So I am sorry if I said he was "OK" too soon. That is how I understood it, and we are on the other side of the country.

I won't post anything else about it unless I hear that someone actually spoke to Alex himself OK."

JUDE MATTHEWS: News from his childhood friend Wes in New York. Jude was at Savannah Strachan's house (aka his wife). Her entire family stayed, they live in Coliseum Square. There were looters, so they boarded up the downstairs, nailed the door shut. He's drinking beer, guarding their upstairs balcony with a gun. They have a ladder that they can climb down on, and they put the ladder across to other balconies to visit other neighbors who stuck it out. Typical Jude style.

As a side note, Jude went to go loot whole foods, but there were too many other looters there, so he got overwhelmed and left!!!!

This is from spasticrobot.typepad.com, friend of Jude (see comments on newest entry):
did speak to jude yesterday, he said he was having fun now, but he thought it might get old in a week or two. he sounded good and was stocked on beer and food, and yes, guns. we told him we could pick him up in houston if he gets transported there.

We're willing to help out with records and maybe even with some turntables (some portable battery powered, some not). We can also burn CDs and make tapes of anything in our collection (6000+ records). When we got married and merged our collectons, we ended up with lots of doubles and in some cases, triples and quadruples! We have LPs, 45s and 78s we're willing to donate, even if Goner wants to sell them in the store. We also have some clothes and shoes that we want to send. Just let us know where to send stuff and we'll get 'em out.

Having been in several tornadoes and losing a house to one when I was 5, I feel for all of you. No one, absolutely no one, hesitate to ask for anything. We'll do absolutely anything we can do to help.

OK, Lisa, understood, no more posts from across the big pond about Mr Chilton! Many apologies for any problems caused by my hasty posting ...

HOWEVER, this just in from NOLA man John Broven:

"New Orleans Update

With the unspeakable tragedies occurring in New Orleans, and the ensuing mix of fact, rumor and hyperbole, I thought I would give this “round robin” update based on various communications received – notably from Alan and Pat Warner.

* Fats Domino has been rescued from his flooded house. He is safe but exhausted.
* Dave Bartholomew and his family escaped with the ‘clothes on their backs.’
* Allen Toussaint was reportedly seeking a bus to Houston….
* The Nevilles are in Memphis but their homes are a mess.
* Just had an unconfirmed report that Irma Thomas is safe.
* Connie LaRocca is with her family in Las Vegas but her house, which is near the broken 17th Street levee, is under water.
* No news of Chuck Carbo except that his house is submerged.
* Still awaiting to hear news on Clarence Henry, Frankie Ford, Harold Battiste, Cosimo Matassa etc.
* Writers Jeff Hannusch and Tad Jones both evacuated safely, but acknowledge it will be ‘months’ before they can return – and they have no idea what they will be returning to.

There has been almost no mention of the music culture in the media except for an Alan Warner quote on the CNN website.

That’s it for now. There are so many other friends/musical heroes that we await to hear from. Our thoughts are with them all.

If anyone wants to take a vacation in beautiful Orlando, Florida. You're welcome to come. Maybe we can even scam some free disney tickets. This whole thing just sucks so bad. Ive been through my share of hurricanes, and Ive never taken them seriously. Its really hard to take the seriously because the media makes each one sound like its going to be the apocalypse, and besides Andrew they have never really been "that" bad, but even Andrew doesnt compare to this. I know if I lived in N.O. or Biloxi I wouldnt have evacuated. This is some scary shit.

Doo Doo Khunt:

Oh, and Matt P. and Damy are with us.
Matt Muscle:

just got word from Bevis, a friend of mine who rode it out:

I am alive, arguably tougher than any of you all...

I got out today, Sept. 1st, from the worst of all possible worlds. If any of you that don't know me personally saw the tattooed freak on CNN days ago, that was me.

Yes, I rode out the storm, that was the easy part. The hard part was living through the hell that New Orleans became after the fact. MAKE NO MISTAKE, WHAT THE NEWS IS TELLING YOU IS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THE RAMPANT ANARCHY AND CHAOS THAT IS AND WAS NEW ORLEANS.

Some reasons why:

Roving packs of weapon weilding marauders killing and looting everything in sight.
No power, making the French Quarter wonderful for the first night, a TOTAL NIGHTMARE the next.
Destruction on a level only rivalled by Iraq, SERIOUSLY.
Corpses floating in most parts of the city.
The heat, good lord, the heat...
Police essentially forming gangs of their own, sleepless and out of control.
The military having turf wars in every parish, leaving yet more corpses and scaring the shit out of everyone.
Crazed militia-type behavior from people that you always knew were on the verge, turning them into assholes too ready to kill than help their fellow man.
The stench of organic rot and the imminent threat of diseases long thought extinct.
And many more things I can't bear to tell you all right now for fear of giving you all the cold sweats, I mean it.

Imagine "Apocalypse Now", mix in a generous portion of "28 Days Later", it doesn't even come close. This is something that you will never undestand unless you were there. I am in serious shock, yet somehow calm in the knowledge that I LIVED THROUGH IT.

Yeah, I didn't even know I was that crazy... But I'm not stupid, so I am in Lafayette for a couple of days in sanctuary, then possibly to Texass, who knows....

I kept a storm journal, the results of which will be posted as soon as I have enough p.c. time and the stomach to relive it that long.

Whatever you do, DO NOT GO THERE UNTIL IT IS UNIVERSALLY AGREED THAT IT IS SAFE.

Death rules that place and all that dared to stay any longer...

I am deeply and sincerely touched by the communication I have received as a result of my descent into madness, much love to you all...

Uptight, just and FYI.

Marc really didn't want his phone number printed and was hoping to help Goner refugees that were interested first.

I was hoping the (kind) Goner hosts hosting ANDY ROTZZ could pass this info on to him since I understand he has construction experience (but NOT required) [and not opposed to manual labor] and Marc said had TWO immediate jobs available for an approximate 2-week duration.

I sent the info to Eric/Zac so that they could hopefully get it to the folks who need it.

they need you, but they'll turn you away, sad to say.

here in NY during 9/11 ground zero excavation the first week or two, i knew a bunch of guys w/ construction and demolition experience who so desperately wanted to help that they just went to the site and said, "can we help?"

the army corps of engineers were there and did not want any outside assistance. the cops ARRESTED people who went down there to lend their bonafide, needed trade skills. it was a chaotic mad house and supposedly, we had all the support in the world AND martial law below 14th st.

its more of a risk to you if you do it. i know its hard to stand back and watch your skills go unused... but you'd be no help to anyone if you got fucked up while trying to help

I can. Let me know how much they need for bus fare to get to Austin or elsewhere in TX, and I'll hook them up.
kermitthefrog:

they need you, but they'll turn you away, sad to say.

my day job is with the federal government, this is being organized by them. not sure what i'll be doing though the phrase "assist in medical response and recovery" (italics mine) was used. i've done some hazardous materials clean up before and got some training after 9/11 to respond to nbc attacks so i'd imagine i'd be doing that. or administrative stuff like i'm doing now. don't know really but i want to help somehow.

I'll find out sometime after 2 pm CST if i'm going. i'll be down there for 2 weeks if i go.

Jessica and Manny called and said they made it to Texas. Also told me that if NOLA peeps go to an unemployment office they will give you food stamps and hook you up w/ jobs if you need some $$$
Jeff G:

Anybody know if Big Daddy Jay Pendleton's okay? He was still down there, right?

I'm pretty sure he posted to the NOLA Refugees Board on MySpace as Dr. A Go Go. At the time I assumed it was him but maybe I'm wrong.

Hey- if Peg's reading this: Tim Warren called the Goner store looking for you, and says to call Crypt headquarters as soon as you can.

melva; glad your family's ok...hope your dad shoots to kill.
Louie...sorry about your family in missisippi; i'll call tonight.
Joe, glad your family's ok...the Clickem Brotherhood's gotta look out for each other.
i talked to mom last night; 2 trees took out the living room, but didn't effect the rest of the house..a friend is going to get the pics and paperwork out...sounds like they stayed dry, thank god. too much structural damage to rebild, though. Mel's gonna come in from fla. and help out.
Bevis, lemmie know if you need any help if you're moving up north.
No true Conservative president would pull the National Guard out of a disaster-prone state, in order to fight for abstractions like "democracy" in the Middle East...alot of other Conservatives are pissed, too. If the GOP want my vote in '08, they've gotta clean the stench of the Bush administation out of the party, and I dont see that happening.I may even(holds back vomit) vote Dem. if they nominate a pro-defense, old-style Democrat.
sorry for the political harange;this week has shown how meaningless this shit is in the long run...again,if there's any way i can help anyone out, lemme know.

Reading this thread is surreal, especially being up here in Canada where the worst we get is a bit too much snow sometimes. I'm just glad to hear that NOLA Goners' have made it out ok. I'll be making a donation to the Goner relief fund and if any of you find yourself up north I've got a large basement thats recently been outfitted with a de-humidifier so its more than liveable now.
Joe Pestilence:

Louie,i am terribly sorry about your family's loss. My prayers are with them, and all of you.

Anyone know the whereabouts of 2 folks who moved to NOLA from Sacto about a year ago. Their names are Chris McKay & Corina. Chris is tall, lanky, quiet and a hell of a guitarist. He goes by McKay. Corina is a bit loud but good people. Dont know if they intigrated themselves in with the NOLA punks or not but any word on them would be appreciated.
king louie:

paul web just turned up in lafayette...gonna go hang with him soon...
jay reatard:

i know Chris and Corina and yes they aligned w/ the NOLA punx. i used to work w/ him and he would usually come to Kajun SS shows. i know that has no relevance right now. anyway i know nothing about their where abouts, but would really like to know if they are okay. please post if you hear anything.

paul web (mangina drummer) just text and said all is well and to shoot all looters...they tried to steal his 2005 ford stang.

I'm glad Mike got out. I haven't seen him since 97', but he is one of the coolest people I've ever met. Small effing world. I'd love to see the CNN interview he was in. Is it online anywhere?
AndreaH:

Melva, and everyone else who has asked. . .a very kind stranger (to me, at least) on MySpace emailed me to say he heard Chris Kirsch got out Sunday and is in N. Louisiana, and he also heard Tony Kirsch is possibly in Atlanta.
Melva in Milwaukee:

AndreaH- whew! Thanks for the info. I'm glad they are ok.

My best friend, Stephanie Stennett (for those who know her) calle me from AL a few mintues ago and said she made it out of NOLA early Monday. She went to MS for refuge and ended up right into the storm. Her boyfriend Tom is missing.

Melva in Milwaukee:

I'm worried about Dale too.

My husband has a few friends from here that moved to NO and we have not heard about any of them. There are so many people to find.

Spoke to my mom- I'm going down to NO when it's ok and helping them move their stuff. They are not going to move back.

If anyone needs a place to stay in WI (no snow yet!)- email me. I can put you up at my house or at a hotel.

Bad shit. I checked in yesterday to see if Michael B. was okay... Glad to hear you're out / sorry 'bout your stash and thanks to everyone else for the inside story. Gotta figure there's going to be some amazing hiphop lyrics coming out of this as soon as anyone's got a place to record...

I tried to send Michael an e-mail to offer replacements for his soggy H2Ds but the bellsouth address I had no longer works. Drop me a line whenever you can.

But also --being aware that I may have to renege on the offer at some point in the future-- I'd like to offer Hyped to Death, Homework, Teenline, or Messthetics CD-R comps to anyone who had to leave their music behind. Drop me a line when you're settled and I'll mail'em out.

There's also a number of 70s/80s NOLA musicians on H2D that I'm concerned about if any Goners know them/have seen them. Jeri Cain Rossi (Black Cat Bone / Red Wine Moan author), Steve Picou (Bas Clas, LA Music Commission), Spencer Livingston (Ballistics, SPACEgallery), Dave Gostl (Buns), Mark Bingham (Piety Street studios, Social Climbers/MX80/etc.), Rick Connick, John Stich, Darius Kalil etc. from the Men in Black/Wayward Youth crew; and given his lifestyle/life-story I should probably be wondering about Jerry Scruggs (August Sons) on his tube-amp farm over in Wiggins MS.

No need to bother any of them to get in touch, but if you've seen'em...
Thanks.

Uptight White:

Here is a Houston perspective from Preston Long, formerly of Wig/ Mule/PW Long. It was forwarded to me by a friend.

Subject
RE: Fw: Gulf Coast

Jess(girlfriend) is way closer to it then I am cause she's photo-ing the
Houston refugee situation for he Houston Chronicle and Associated Press
everyday. She's gonna pull an 8 hr shift at the Astrodome today after doing
a couple hours at the VA Hosp. I don't know. Nobody knows. The NOLA
situation is nowhere near stabilized with armed marauders and guerilla war
type conditions so there's no helping anybody there until the explosions and
toxification, etc subside. This is the best thing that could have happened
for Bush. Cindy Sheehan will never be heard from again, etc...I'm sure
donations will go to good use but what the situation needs desperately is
leadership and all that its gettin' is posturing from that grinning little
monkey. Most of the people showing up here are obviously the neediest and
most destitute and they're bringing this embittered sence of entitlement.
Houston offered the Astrodome for 23,000 people but the fire marshall
declared it at capacity at 11,000 as the busses were rolling up to the door
leaving 300 busloads of people in the parking lot last night. The peole who
were turned away from the 'Dome started wishing a hurricane on Houston, etc.
Ugly shit. The first bus that showed up was a 40 or 50-seater schoolbus
jacked by a twenty-year kid with 70 people in it. He said the cops in NOLA
told him to go ahead and take it...It's turing into an international
disgrace and anybody whose ever spent two weeks in NOLA outside of Mardi
Gras could have told you that this is exactly the way those peole would act
in this situation. I'v heard from a couple friends who are nowhere near
there right now. I don't really know anybody there who wouldn't have had the
means to evacuate early, only old neighbors that I never talked to again
after leaving there, etc. They say Fats Domino is missing. He rode the storm
out, was last seen on a balcony. Aaron Neville says his neices are
missing...fuck the media and their ability to make us all so dependent on
them for these episodic dramas that we gobble up to fill the yawning,
chasmatic voids in our barren souls....
Joe Pestilence:

I finally talked to my mom and sister this morning! My immediate family has made it out OK. My mom confirms her house was flattened and that she had insurance and some possibility of financing from FEMA might help her get a place pretty soon, she thinks.right now her and her boyfriend Bobby are staying at a motel 6 in Mobile. I still haven't heard from my Dad's side of the family yet, they also live in Gulfport.

I don't think this crisis is gonna be good for Fearless Leader-- a whole lotta people down there are pissed at him for taking his sweet time in adressing problems there,as well as doing too little too late by the time the shit has long since hit the fan and has stunk up the room. I worried about Cindy Sheehan (among other things!) being swept under the rug and this tragedy being used to prop up a big Dubya Hero Moment but i don't think it's gonna happen. I heard they didn't even broadcast his photo-op visit to Biloxi, that's how pissed folks are about him. Or so i've heard...
Joe Pestilence:

Other Coast News:The Sharkhead Souvenier Shop on Biloxi Beach has been total totalled, which means Marlon Seal (anyone know him?) is at the very least w/out a job at this time.

Still no word on Curtis.Marlon S.,Chip Lechner,Mozart Mark Dedeaux,Alex Feming,Jerry Paradiddle; the list of the absent grows.
Joe Pestilence:

Corrections:

Hey Chuck! Thanks for the offer. I'll let you know after I can get back into my home 4 months from now... if the H2D CDs are still there. It's too much to replace. I had 'em all!!!

East Cambridge, right down the street from the CambridgeSide Galleria Mall. The area is where Boston/Cambridge/Somerville and Charlestown meet; it's pretty easy to get anywhere from there.

Rents are still generally outrageous in the Boston area, but my landlord spoke of going thru a realtor to rent out the place. There's at least four places for rent (including this one) on my street alone. People are going to have to come down in price if they want tenants.
kermitthefrog:

my last apartment in boston was the last year of rent control. you might not believe it but a little more than a decade ago you could live on comm. ave in alston for less than $500 a month. prices were already through the roof when i left town 5 years ago.
