Cole:

Who pulled it off? I always thought the Sex Pistols in Sid and Nancy were pretty good.
bazooka joe:

GARY FUCKING BUSEY and SISSY FUCKING SPACEK
Donkey:

Brains!
leftpeg:

The guy who played Ian Curtis in Control.
leftpeg:

I still haven't seen Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll yet, but I've heard positive things about it.
tigerblinds:

Apparently Bobcat Goldthwait played Roy Orbinson in a movie called Sleeping Dogs Lie, which is about a woman who blew her dog.
Cole:

CBGB movie?Someone please post the trailor. I don't know how to do it from my phone. Man....the Foo Fighters guy looks like a real shity Iggy.
Mark Beef:

Gilbert Gottfried plays Donald "Duck" Dunn in those Aflac commercials
eric o:

GARY FUCKING BUSEY and SISSY FUCKING SPACEK

you got that right. Loretta Lynn said she had to get Sissy Spacek away from her 'cause Sissy was morphing into Loretta.
Jesse Garon:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1ZNfaOpqKo

CB's movie already getting panned. god knows it's gotten enough publicity.
Cole:

I'll be honest here. I'm a dude that drives a shitty ford ranger, spends almost all of his time at work, or with his wife and kids, and loves nothing more than taking 4 hour walks into the woods with his mutt dogs. I don't give a shit about your scion or axe razors. This marketing strategey has worked. I'll see this shitty movie in the theatres. I'll take my wife and we'll call it date night. This time I get to pick what we do. It has hollywood actors playing The Ramones and Stiv Bators! I know it's gonna suck but I don't think Ihave the strength to resist.
ida slapter:

The guy who played Ian Curtis in Control.

AMAZING. And the movie itself was beautiful to watch.
Jesse Garon:

Cole, that's what I said about the Germs movie and I couldn't bear to watch it all the way through.

still, I may see this one, altho I did see a bunch of those acts at CBGB's so it could be doubly painful.
Cole:

Thanks for posting the clip for me Jesse. You don't need to see this sir. It's not for you. You have to have spent years day dreaming about those gigs and feeling like cbgb was on another planet to buy into this horse shit. Look at Iggy in that clip! That smile is awful. I just can't pretend it's not happening though.
bradx:

gary busey as buddy holly, he even sang and played the guitar for real in the movie, as i recall. dennis quaid as jerry lee lewis in great balls of fire was a huge influence on ten year old me.
tigerblinds:

I hate movies about musicians...they all suck. Documentaries can be interesting, but all movies about musicians are fucking lame. I remember when I was a kid watching the made for T.V. movie about The Beach Boys...the only reason I could sit through it was because I didn't know much about the Beach Boys....I watched it with my Mom, and at the end I said, "So Dennis was actually the cool one? And my Mom said, "he was the bad one."....

All movies about musicians are like stupid/boring/baby boomer bullshit...I've fallen asleep watching Cole Miner's Daughter at least 6 times now..that movie is complete horse shit. The Ray Charles movie was complete horse shit and that won some awards...the Johnny Cash movie was so far off the truth, god that movie was horrible. I'm struggling to think of any movie about musicians worth watching, and only thing that comes to mind is Spinal Tap.
tigerblinds:

Labamba sucked donkey balls...the Buddy Holly movie was laughable, it's cool how Busey can only play Busey....Busey in anything is interesting.
tigerblinds:

The Tina Turner movie was the worst most offensive crock of shit I've ever seen...totally out of context and completely naive when it came to the music.....these movies are made by and for the most uncool, unhip, portion of humanity. Part of the problem is that accepted Rocknroll history was written by racists and pop journalists.
tigerblinds:

You know what I mean? Most prominent blues historians were Clapton-fan boys...Clapton is one of the biggest, racist honkys that ever lived, and just like Elvis he built his career ripping off black people and repackaging it.....complete bullshit.

Besides the racist elements of rock history, as the music industry grew it became increasingly geared towards kids with disposable income...it's all bull shit. Burn down the rocknroll hall of fame, line them all up against the wall and fire....start over....fuck all of that noise and music geared towards a homogenized mass market.

Fuck all of this bullshit, fake ass, baby boomer mythologizing....
Scott:

It looks like CBGB did a good job of casting the Ramones, visually at least.

http://www.imdb.com/media/rm4077625600/nm0006575
finnark:

and just like Elvis he built his career ripping off black people

Elvis was not a racist. This is bullshit that has been debunked in numerous places.

And his arrangement of Hound Dog was adapted not from Big Mama Thornton's version but from Freddie Bell and the Bellboys, a white Las Vegas band.
tigerblinds:

Elvis was a fucking honky racist...believe whatever the hell you want....and so many fucking people covered Hound Dog and it's many fucking variations...

Check it out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hound_Dog_%28song%29#Cover_versions

Within 6 months after Thornton did it there were 6 covers by white country bands...not to mention all of the blues covers...

So take your bullshit mainstream revisionist history somewhere else....it don't mean shit who Elvis got it from.
tigerblinds:

One of the biggest racist myths is that there is even a distinction between blues and country...but seriously don't get me started.
tigerblinds:

Try this version on for size bud.....Elvis can suck my left one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5Zj13hlNhk
tigerblinds:

I don't really give a shit if Elvis was racist to be honest...I like tons of music by racists Mississippi Fred McDowell was a racist...that didn't stop him from hanging out with white folks...they say we are all racists. Sam Phillips was very racist, he referred to black people as "coloreds" into the 90's...but that doesn't change allot of good contributions he made to music.

But try to look threw the prism of the past and see reality and get to the facts...also try to recognize the bullshit in the world because it's pervasive.
ida slapter:

You are talking to yourself again...
tigerblinds:

Like hell I am. Dismiss me and you're a fool.
tigerblinds:

I'm sorry if you Elvis fan boys can't handle a little derision when it comes to "The King"...his many impersonators gave us more.....but rocknroll is dead and I'm telling you how it happened.

Have you heard the Lurch record I did 6 or 7 years ago? It's holding up with age and sounds sweeter and sweeter every year.
tigerblinds:

Here is a message board discussion on the Lomax's that bares relevance here:

http://rateyourmusic.com/board_message?message_id=4672020&find=4672056 &x=m

Don't get sidetracked by your undying loyalty to Elvis.

My only point was that RocknRoll mythology has been distorted to the point of meaninglessness as it became "pop"....and that the vast majority of music as we know it today are confined to these rigid laws of mass consumption.
tigerblinds:

Loretta Lynn is a racist...it's a well known fact. I got racists in my own background, I just admitted to being racist. Ask me if I give a shit....I'm pointing out why rocknroll movies are all bullshit and why rocknroll itself is now bullshit.

Racism and pop journalism fucking killed it...the fucking baby boomers are mostly to blame....that's why people have no clue of what's good now, or what was really significant about the music then....that was my point.....finished.

The music industry was an industry just like the coal industry or any other industry and they have all been exported to other countries.
tigerblinds:

In fact, if you're an aspiring musician and you got a look and sound that is smooth, non-confrontational and easily accessible...get your ass over to Europe because that's where the A&R men are...that's how you get discovered.

Quit wasting time in the USA where there is nothing but over processed, predatory bullshit...that's where all of these stupid shits in mainstream music got discovered.

You want to be like Elvis? You want a bogus movie about your life? You want to be surrounded by superficial "yes" people? Who fan over your feces? I just gave you a clue as to how it happens.
Mark Beef:

you are typeAtron
finnark:

My only point was that RocknRoll mythology has been distorted to the point of meaninglessness as it became "pop"

Your only point? I thought your point was that Elvis was a racist who ripped off black people. Guess I misunderstood.

In fact, Elvis spoke of the black artists who had influenced him with great affection and respect in numerous interviews over his lifetime.

"Bear Cat," BTW, is a different song, not a "version" of Hound Dog. It's what's called an "answer song."

Elvis was a fucking honky racist

Evidence?
leftpeg:

You could have just started your own "Elvis was a racist" thread and spared the rest of us with this off-topic babble.
tigerblinds:

Not only was Elvis racist, he also beat women....you can hear him on early live recording making jokes about breaking his girlfriends jaw...he was also supposedly banned from some town in Spain where he was filming a movie because he was caught hitting some woman...also Waylon Jennings I think it was, said that he had to stop hanging out with Elvis because he got tired of seeing him hit Presilla, but they were still friends....

The thing is that Elvis' fans are such fucking fanatical wack jobs that all of this shit gets buried under the rug.

Man I don't give a shit either way....I can take or leave Elvis....men hit women, it happens on all levels of society...people from our scene have hit women, but I'm not passing judgement...that's their business. Some are easy targets and very hyped, but I'm not saying anything. Everyone is nuts anyway.

But why should Ike Turner be labeled a wife beater the rest of his life and Elvis is still "The King"....I call bullshit...fuck Elvis, fuck rocknroll movies.
tigerblinds:

Also, Rufus Thomas also covered Hound Dog in later years, but listen to the fucking song...Bear Cat is the same fucking song and there has been countless other variations beyond that.
Jesse Garon:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdxC0jefysM

so shutup already
tigerblinds:

Movies tend to be bullshit in general anyway...you sit yourself down in a chair and you are a passive observer....

Oh yeah, it's fairly well known that Elvis gave Presilla a black eye at least once but they covered for it by saying that it was during a pillow fight....but try finding that info online even..

It's because Elvis's fans are such stupid spineless morons, it's not even worth arguing with them....kind of like Beatles fans....I like Elvis, I like The Beatles...I don't give a shit if Elvis was a honky or not...but he sure as hell was a fucking racist honky.
tigerblinds:

There is a very racist tendency is western civilization to attribute special powers to the "magical primitive".....like the black guy that shows up and makes everything better somehow...I don't know, look it up, plenty of articles have been written about it....

Who gives a shit if Elvis had black backup Gospel singers or he really loved soul food.....fucking Eric Clapton loved Bob Marley, it didn't stop him from turning around and strongly supporting the National Front and their overt racist agenda....

Hell, Clapton is fine, I like Yardbirds, I like Cream....but Clapton is a fucking racist...that's just life.

There are allot of shades of grey in the world. Sometimes I can be cool, sometimes I'm an asshole....I take shits and my shit stinks, and I won't put up with anyone telling me otherwise....my shit smells like poop, not flowers.
whadatsay:

I heard that Elvis would punch every black cat he saw.
Mark Beef:

OJ Simpson as Sun Ra, Sam Waterson as the Legendary Stardust Cowboy, and James Brolin as Ziggy Stardust in Capricorn One
bradx:

elvis was racist because he beat his wife. got it.
tigerblinds:

Yeah yeah, Elvis was different...he's the king. He wasn't a Nixonite or anything.
tigerblinds:

sarcasm ^
tigerblinds:

Actually sorry for giving you guys a debate...you know I like you beyond the occasional disagreement....but how well do any of us really know a celebrity like Elvis? That's an entirely different matter.

But really my main point was that the music industry is racist, because it's mainly based on supply and demand and mass sales....but I do think that Ike Vs. Elvis is a very poignant metaphor/dialect.

I'm actually not the first to point out that Ike was the true "king of rocknroll" that's an idea that has been floating around since the late 60's or 70's....

But again, my impressions of Elvis are every bit as valid as your alls are...it's hard to know truth when it comes to celebrity, especially when it is a mega dollar franchise. There are plenty of people still watching out for Elvis' estate. But my main point was that the music industry has always been racist, because society has always been racist, and it's a giant mindfuck...movies are also crude representations of fact, which doesn't help matters at all.
tigerblinds:

I'm kind of buzzed off my ass at the moment. Mark Beef those are some impressive ones.
tigerblinds:

Frank Sinatra was racist, but his fans aren't even as annoyingly psychotic as Elvis' fans....yeah yeah, I know he was cool with Sammy Davis...whatever.
Vinyl Ritchie:

Forrest Whitaker in Bird was great...he even learned the correct valve fingerings and breathing for on-stage scenes. Not all movies about musicians suck, just the ones made in the 21st century.
joseph t:

Did David Carradine actually sing and play in Bound For Glory? I haven't seen it in years
eric o:

Probably. He had some crappy albums in the 70s.
Jesse Garon:

as long as we're on about the Guthrie family, Arlo's turn as himself in "Alice's Restaurant" was not bad.
Flal:

I think someone should cut off tigerblinds fingers.
Cole:

Nah. He's basically an opinionated asshole, but he's a GONER with asshole opinions, so I can deal. There's gold there. He once started a thread about the Autodramatics. I had never heard heard of that band and I love them now. He has cool stories. Let him do his thing. Also, I enjoyed The Runaways movie recently . We can all nit pick it to death. I've learned to take what you can get and lower those expectations. I liked it.
jakeleg:

Dexter Gordon in Round Midnight.
Flal:

I was just messing around. I wouldn't really like for anyone to lose their fingers.
ida slapter:

Dexter Gordon in Round Midnight.

Dexter Gordon tried to pick up my mom at a jazz club while my dad was in the bathroom. Late 60s.
tigerblinds:

Oh damn....Flal was dissing me and I missed my chance to retaliate...thanks for having my back Cole, you my honkey.
tigerblinds:

Anyone who tries to touch my hands gets sliced and diced...

In the CBGB flick, Alan Rickman looks like Matt Muscle a bit
SAMBEAUX:

Alan Rickman looks like Matt Muscle a bit

Yes. Same nose, same hair.
wewhowait:

Being racist + hitting women is what rock n' roll is all about
tigerblinds:

there is some live recording of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald where he jokes about skinning black people and wearing them as a wet suit....it's way harder to find now than it used to be 7 or 8 years ago...because guess what, somebody owns the rights to his music and franchise and they are looking out for their investment. Same thing goes for all big stars.

A couple years ago there was a rather notorious photo that Jack Kerouac supposedly got tricked into doing for a gay beefcake magazine....truth is that he probably just needed the money...but they say he was drunk, and didn't realize what kind of magazine it was.....anyway same deal, try finding them now....you may actually have to read a bio to learn about them.

Same deal with Elvis, but whatever. It's all bullshit. Celebrity is such a crock of shit.
Tim Teabag:

Being racist + hitting women is what rock n' roll is all about

I thought that was hip hops domain.
bazooka joe:
