David West channels his Husker Du punk rage in Burning Sensation, his Ultravox sophistication in Total Control (touring member) and his pop side in RAT COLUMNS.
There a little touch of Swirlies (remember them!) and a little MBV, but mostly strummy pop!
"On this his second time out of the shed as Rat Columns, Man of Perth David West recruited
two liked minded gents in the persons of Matt Bleyle and Jon Young to
fully render a proper pop combo. With the two new lads and some help
from Total Control maven James Vinceguerra ‘Spectre Hole’ was
birthed. While it is true that this LP flies closer in to the pop sun
than their previous efforts, it still man- ages to keep a toe in the
murky waters of guitar noise and dour ambience. What you have here are
fifteen tracks of varying lengths and moods that will keep the listener
on edge for the duration no matter the mental afflication."

"RAT COLUMNS is a trio from San Francisco, California that generates
dark, ill-fit- ting pop wanderings, introspective jangle and chime,
mangled noises and various points between. The band was started by DAVID
WEST (RANK/XEROS, BURNING SENSATION) in the isolated environs of Perth,
Western Australia, and following a move to the northern hemisphere the
trio format was happened upon with the addition of drummer/guitarist
MATT BLEYLE (VIOLENT CHANGE, SPOONS, ABI YOYOS) Â and bassist JON YOUNG.
The three recorded the LP Sceptre Hole in the second half of 2011. As
on the previous four-song 7" (SmartGuy Records, 2011), JAMES VINCIGUERRA
(TOTAL CONTROL, SOVIET VALVES, AIDS) contributed some drums to the
effort. Sure, Sceptre Hole flies closer in to the pop sun than before,
but it also keeps a toe in the murky waters of guitar noise and dour
ambience. " - Revolver Mid Heaven Distro
