Big Richard Insect - s/t 7" (Major Crimes AUSTRALIA)

"Big Richard Insect  have a 7” EP out on major crimes and it is faster and greasier than their very excellent demo that came before it. This is some feat considering how their first songs were surprising anthems about beautiful body parts as sung by prehistoric Casanovas.

' Cop Out,’ opens the A-side, haggardly paced as it kicks a can down that street where everything in sight makes you want to spit. It all makes me feel real great. Second in is ‘animals’ filled with completely undecipherable screeches but for a snotty chorus that brings their group vocals back in to the fold. It's more glue sniffing deadbeats than a chain gang this time around, which suits them just as well. Jacked up, it ricochets from wall to wall, leaving dirty streaks similar to those left when a swell maps song beats you up.

The B-side continues with two more of their effortless idjit-punk blitzes, ‘Weird’ and ‘Messed Her Up’. For me, the former is the stand-out of the EP, from the opening thudding bass it drives all the way down into the same strange corner of Australian rock and roll where The Lipstick Killers’ ‘Sockman’ and The Saints’ ‘Kissin’ Cousins’ think it's alright to talk about these things. As a unit, Big Richard Insect has devolved into something baser on this 7” and the substance remaining is primal and purely elemental. "

"First I've heard from these Aussie dudes, and it's a good first impression. A-Side starts with a good Ooga Boogas-esque slo-mo rocker ("Cop Out") followed with some unhinged Bits of Shit-like thrashing about with a killer guitar sound. Side B is where they really shine though - "Weird" is sicko Psychos-esque action, all bassline and guitar squall. And I always love EPs where the best song is last - "Messed Her Up" is slopped-out pounding, full of drunk vocals, a hammering hook and vicious guitar. Quality thuggery. Produced by Mikey Young!
