Midwest Beat - At the Gates lp (Dusty Medical Records)

$13.99

"* The Onion:
A little over a year ago, Milwaukee garage-pop band The Midwest Beat rented out the historic Gates Of Heaven synagogue in James Madison Park for three frigid days of on-location recording. Because of the space?s natural reverb and the recording techniques of the record?s producer, analog tape purist Kyle Motor, a live feel was guaranteed, and overdubbing later was nearly impossible. The result finds the band effortlessly experimenting with genres, all while keeping the band's signature soaring harmonies and total devotion to the pop-song arrangement.

* Bull City Records (bullcityrecords.com):
I apologize for sounding so cliche, but I honestly can?t understand how each song these fellas write is not its own A-side. The memorable hooks recall that cool and classic 60s garage bounce (think Zombies), but are updated with the swagger and urgency of 70s powerpop (think Paul Collins? Beat). With a slight twang bend and a thin layer of fuzz draped over the vocals, these songs held my attention enough to have kept me flipping from side to side for the last 40 minutes straight.

* The Midpoint Blog:
Short catchy tunes, amazingly clean guitars, and a sound which is the missing link between Big Star and The Replacements" -Termbo
