Music: As far as bands... no. folks be jammin' jawaiian lots, a "wicked" mix of reggae and hawaiian music. and rap. it's not good.

best to just stick to the traditional hawaiian music station (KCCN) and listen to brother Iz, Gabby, Peter Moon and Palani Vaughn.

Big Island (Hawaii): Volcanoes are great. Flights are like 70 bucks to get from island to island.

Oahu: Waikiki is fun, completely touristed out, but if you wanna put on an aloha shirt, tons of sunscreen and geek out on the beach it's great. beachside bars are all right. you can rent surfboards and paddle around and attempt to surf if you want. nice. you've probably got similar stuff in australia, dunno.

If you're into Tiki stuff and/or dive bars, find La Mariana Sailing Club (2) on Sand Island. The last of the Tiki bars in Hawaii. Great cheap drinks, pretty bad food. Awesome.

Eat at local plate lunch places: Yummy's, Grace's, etc. Also L&L Drive In and Zippy's (chili rice). The only thing cheap in Hawaii is the food. As you would guess, seafood / sushi is amazing.

North shore is quiet during the summertime. You can see all the famous surf spots with no waves. Get some shave ice at Matsumoto's and wander around.

Driving through the Pali (mountain in the middle of the island) is awesome, too.

Sandy Beach for bodysurfing. Don't broke yo neck, haole! Go to Makapuu if you're more of a beginner but you can still get stuck headfirst into the sand.
Hanauma Bay is fun snorkling with tons of fish and big sea turtles cruising around in shallow water.

Maui is the next most popular island but haven't been there in decades. Dunno.

Kauai / Molokai are the least touristic islands. If you want to get away from it all & forget the modern world exists, check 'em out. If you want anything done at any kind of reasonable pace, don't go there.

There's a couple of hotels on Lanai but I don't think there's a lot there other than golf courses.

If you're an adventure tourist there's parasailing, hang gliding, scuba diving, crazy hikes and all that kinda jive. Don't know details but you should be able to figger 'em out by yourself.

Don't piss off locals, respect that you're a visitor to someone else's land who's been stomped on for centuries and you should be all right. Even if you can't understand a word they're saying.

Mahalo! It was rad! Didn't make it to northshore, good Jap bar in Waikiki = Genius Lounge (kinda hidden on Lewers) w/ everyday happyhour and nibbles, surfed, shot guns and snorkelled and bunch of other touristy stuff (hello mustang)..

Maui and Kauai delivered, managed to catch a great surf band 'The Takeoffs' playing in Kauai.. the drummer has a radio show 'Rad on the Rock' was a top dude.. http://kkcr.org/schedule.htm

Would definitely go back and spend more time in Kauai!
