Los Picosos or Los Comales. Both on Summer Ave.

Los Piscos or Camino De Michoacan on Macon are my favorites.

Has anyone been into that new place next to the lamplighter?
Posted: Aug 17, 2012 8:51 am
We went Tuesday and it was pretty awful -- the blandest beef burrito imaginable, so-so salsa, pedestrian margaritas, and the most impractical tables I've ever sat at.

It's pretty much a happy mexican. I think they may have a few dishes they don't have at their other restaurants, but it doesn't really look like "the only authentic family style Mexican restaurant in Memphis." Unless they're using a really specific Happy Mexican themed criteria to define the term.
Posted: Aug 20, 2012 8:22 am
They claim that the Frida's food, as opposed to the Happy Mexican menu, is what the family serves at home, more or less. If so, I would be one Unhappy Mexican.

Still think it looks like FRIDAYS minus the Y.

Dang brah?
Posted: Aug 22, 2012 5:38 pm
I'm pretty sure I've had better Mexican food at Friday's than the humdrum crap at Frida's.

We Frida'd it today. That big parking lot was FULL of Med Center folks looking for good Mexican food that won't upset their tummy. Boring salsa, boring burrito, decent pica de gallo that was actually kinda spicy. Awesome generic Mexican Restaurant decor ala the Happy Mexican. Will survive on Margarita specials, I'm sure.

I still want a whole chicken from Los Picosos on the weekend. Those things look amazing.

I know a lot of people don't like the attitude and/or the vibe, but the fish tacos and the brisket tacos at Tortugas are pretty amazing.

Highway to the Taco Zone Update:

Los Comales fucking rules. Grilled Onions and the pepper makes the taco. We've been twice this week. Holy Shit!! Rice and beans suck, though.

Los Picosos no es bueno. Had three different types of tacos (asada, pollo, carnita) tonight. Not a one of 'em was worth shit. I've read that there is a different cook now. Extremely disappointed.

Did this. Only available on the weekends. Wow!

Bad tacos as Los Picosos? NO BUENO. Have never had any bad food other than chips that were a bit stale at the joint.

Will give the Los Comales a go, but have to give Los Picosos another try to see for myself.
Posted: Nov 5, 2012 2:22 pm
damn...dont even know about the whole chicken thing. Ive never had a bad taco at Picosos either. Comales runnin a close second in all categories right now. Best fn salsa verde ever. Damn its hot, but the real deal. I agree that the food at Los Tortugas is tasty, but I just cant get past the vibe in that joint. Those dudes are seriously full of themselves and its expensive as shit. Too many other mom and pop places to eat for that kinda attitude. Annoying and may never go back.

Highway to the Taco Zone full disclosure:
Oct 21-Just a snack on the way back from JD and Suzy's: mind blown at Los Comales (Ordered combination...sucked balls. Ordered real taco...sublime. Grilled onions. Some sort of weird soy marinade on the asada. Jalapeno pepper is hot as shit. Lose some seeds, but eat it!! I was almost crying. Holy shit! Chicken comes with a spot of cheese, lettuce and tomato).
Oct 23-Couldn't get Comales out of my Mind. Went back. Damn! (2xpollo, 2x asada tacos)
Oct 26-Los Picosos. MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT!! Wanted so much more (1xcarnitas-but it was really steamed pork (SHITTY), 1xpollo (dry as the sahara), 2xasada).
Oct 28-More COMALES!! Fucking A1! (2x asada 2x chicken). Carrie had a pastor taco that fucking ruled. She also tried a shrimp taco (w/lettuce and tomato) and a mushroom quesadilla. Usually quesadillas are lame, but Carrie said this one had pico inside the quesadilla!!
Oct 29-Tacos at Guadalupana. Snack on the way home from school. Hadn't eaten since breakfast the previous day (Comales). Good, but not as good as Comales. Carrie was in Nashville...didn't eat.
Oct 30-More Comales. I think I'm addicted; take out not as good as in house.
Nov 3-Tacos Borolas. 2xpollo, 2xasada (baseline test). Pretty good. Salsa was spicy!! This was take out--next to Carrie's AmWay office. Carrie had a shrimp taco and a chorizo taco. Carrie says the shrimp taco was as good as Comales.
Nov 4-Camino De Michoacan. Breakfast. 1xpollo, 1xasada. Asada enchiladas. I was supposed to try the tacos for comparison and bring the enchiladas home. I ate everything. No dinner on Sunday for me!

Right now, I'm pretty sure the tacos at Los Comales are the best things I've ever eaten (besides Bruce's balls). Can't wait to explore the rest of the menu.

You try that salsa verde at Comales Tommy?
Tommy Trouble
Posted: Nov 7, 2012 5:54 pm
Colin, I was going to ask you about that. I LOVE verde, but I couldn't tell from your post if you meant Comales or Picoso. Definitely on the list!

Mark, I HAVE tried the salsa verde, but not the verde sauce. You're right, it IS spicy!!
Posted: Nov 9, 2012 4:30 pm
Had Juevos Ranheros yesterday morning at Guadalapana. Absolutely awful. Never going back there again for anything. Dirty as shit and tasteless. The salsa tasted liked diced tomatoes.

Colin, I have no idea why I typed "Mark" in the previous post. Must have been thinking/talking about something else while I typed. Sorry!

I love Guadalapana. Carrie orders juevos ranchero frequently and likes it. She gets the eggs over-easy.

I had enchiladas at Comales on Thursday and Carrie had the Carnitas. Both were good, but not as good as the tacos. Again, the rice and beans are pretty lousy.

I enjoyed the enchiladas much more at Camino De Michoacan.

I think the Rice and beans at Guad are my favorite.

Just coming out of a food coma...Carrie got the whole chicken from Picosos on the way back from work today. It was GREAT. $16 for a chicken, rice and beans, a pack of tortillas, and lots of lettuce, grilled onions, and peppers.

Easily enough food for four people. $4 a head!!

The rice and beans at Picosos are awesome, too.
Didn't try them the other week with the shitty tacos...
Posted: Nov 11, 2012 11:56 am
Damn....gotta get onadem chickens. Honestly, Im not a fan of the rice and beans anywhere here in town. 9 out of 10 times its that pasty, pudding style shit. No taste at all. I could do without both to be honest. Is the chicken deal only on weekends?
Posted: Nov 14, 2012 9:06 pm
me and holly went to los borales and it was terrible service, not busy so i don't know why they ignored her request for avocado three times :/
chicken tacos were super tasty though!
mexican bakery next door was awesome!
still haven't eaten at elenas- im dying to try them out!
los picosos is still my "go to" - so tasty!

I live in da burbs so I eat at Casa Mexicana by the Wolfchase mall regularly and their tacos are damn good. Chorizo, Carnitas, Carne Asada and Chicken....all good.

best tacos in central pa are at this place in harrisburg. killer carnitas, but after i was almost finished with my plate i realized they had pig ears in it. make sure you eat that shit HOT, cuz once it starts to cool down there's no fooling you what it really is.

Taco Trooper Trouble, reporting for duty:

LOS COMALES: STEAK/CHICKEN TACOS=THE REAL SHIT. STEAK TACOS=BEST IN MEMPHIS. My Nashvillian father-in-law also dreams about them.

Chicken/Beef (only on weekends) soups are good. Fish tacos are decent.

(weekend) Pollo Al Carbon = HOLY SHIT!! Best food in Memphis beyond Gus's, Payne's and Cozy Corner???

Over and Out.
Posted: Feb 21, 2013 1:11 pm
THE ADMINISTRATOR must try this LOS COMALES tacos action.

Agreed on Pollo Al Carbon!

Went to Los Picosos last Sunday and it seemed like there was new management... lots of confusion in kitchen and serving, new construction... not great food.

Anyone else have this feeling?
Posted: Mar 26, 2013 2:19 pm
Man...went early last week and had a burrito. No complaints here. Had the same waitress and looked the same lady and her son in there cooking. Los Comales has slowly become my goto joint, esp. cause they got the beer and the dope salsa verde. Had a burrito there not long ago and it wasnt great. I had the Cubana torta recently and it was damn good. Lotsa meat on thats sucker...even weenie.

El Kora is the bomb.

Tomales are pretty good, but the tacos rival Comales.

Different, but bueno.

I've gone by Los Picosos a couple of times lately and it appears they are no longer in business. I thought those huge burritos were great and worth the drive. Where now for grande burritos?
Tommy Trouble
Posted: Sep 13, 2013 11:23 am
Tried La Unica on Sunday. It was okay. The pork taco was pretty good, the beef tacos were ok...(stewed meat). The tamales were ok, but not as good as El Kora.

Taco Truck at Mendenhall and Summer is also really fucking good.
Never went there, because I assumed they only took cash (and I never carry cash)...they take cards.

Also went to Comales last Friday after a long absence. As good as it's ever been. Best tacos I've ever had!!
