ok - as an Aussie tourist coming to the US and visiting quite a few states I'd like some opinions on the best beer to sample whist in each state

here the list
Texas

Nevada

Louisiana

Mississippi

Alabama

Tennessee

North Carolina

New York City

Coors Light is the best beer in all of those places. No contest, no joke.

Buuuuuut, if you don't think alcoholic water counts as beer you might like to try LA 31 while in Louisiana. Abita beers are plentiful but taste bad.

And, if you have time to get a beer at McSorley's while in NYC I recommend it. Its probably not as nice since they cleaned up the dust and started selling their beer in bottles, and it might just be a sentimental thing for me, but I like the place.

Mississippi

I sometimes drink Southern Pecan by Lazy Magnolia. It's pretty good. Let me know your favorites you run across.

do they still sell Ballantine Ale in NYC? Do the rebus!

I drank some Ballantine this summer in NYC.. it was less than good.

Louisiana:

Best Louisiana beer I've had in a while comes from Tin Roof brewery in Baton Rouge. Abita is shite except for the strong stuff they sell in 22 oz bottles (S.O.S., Abbey Ale, and the new Vanilla Doubledog stout). NOLA Brewery stuff is ok, the more exotic flavors (Hurricane Saison, Hopitoulas) are pretty good, the NOLA Blonde is not.

Dixie beer is actually brewed at the Huber brewing company in Wisconsin, which is well known for producing cheap, nasty beer. Avoid. Also avoid anything brewed in Covington (Heiner Brau, Pontchartrain Pilsner, Covington Strawberry, et. al), shit is disgusting.

In conclusion, we're not very good at making beer down here.

LA 31 beer is actually made in Mississippi at the Lazy Magnolia Brewery. It's good and some of the other Lazy Magnolia brews are good too. I think that's the only brewery in Mississippi.

You can buy Boulevard Pale Ale in Alabama!

In NYC you could go to McSorley's if you don't mind crowds of tourists. Most of us professional drinkers find an Irish pub and have a pint of Guiness though. Other good bars downtown are Lakeside Lounge (for the jukebox) and Manitoba's (for the obnoxious owner).

That beer is too sour for me. And the suburban lunkheads ruin the vibe.

Hasn't been good in 20 years. They add carmel coloring to swill and it becomes "bock". Good TX: Fireman's 4, Real Ale, Independence Brewing Co.
Just had LA 31 pale ale, pretty good.

I don't know how far out of Ohio it goes, but Great Lakes insert any of their beers here are all great. I usually will just get the sampler 12 pack with 4 different kinds because I like them all.

folks have tried to convince me that Shiner hasn't changed but I swear it has. I remember in the early 90s it was the greatest thing ever, then when they changed from the short bottle to longnecks (brought on by nationwide distribution and "supervised" brewing by a big brewery..not exclusively brewed in Shiner) it tasted different to me...it surely isn't the same. Glad to see someone else is saying what I have been thinking for years. Man, it used to be great.

Had some Henepin the other night and it was great. Just as good and strong (7 or 8%) as Duvel white label, but half the price. Good shit. Also recently discovered they sell Palm at the Highland-Z, love that beer.

they changed shiner several times over the years. when I first moved to Austin in 86 it was good. by the mid 90's they changed up the recipe and its never been the same. The other shiner beers are pretty good, I like the 101.

One of my friends was in Austin mid 80's to 90's and says the same thing Carney does about Shiner Bock. He may be crazy and full of BS but this is one of the many things I'd trust him on. It may be a mere shadow of it's former self but I'll gladly drink all you care to buy me.

Don't they have Schaefer in NY? "It's the beer to have when you have more than one!"

If for whatever faggy reason you make it to Surdyk's in Mpls...

Usually I drink the cheap shit, but when I'm flying first-class we go with. . .

Kronenbourg

Zwiec

Perwa. Phonetically spelled since my keyboard isn't whacky Pollack with a upper- case L with a slash through it where the 'w' is.

Starropranen (sp?)

my tastes lean towards Slavo-lager beers where you can drink 37 of them in a single setting...

James Ricks?

Smells a bit but he has a heart of gold. Helped me move when not one of my other friends would. Love him to pieces but won't let him around my hardware anymore. He could "fix" it but only he would be able to operate it after that.

James is one of a kind and I mean that in a good way. Last time I saw him a couple of years ago, we were eating at Pags with his family and kids and Devin Miller and his kids. James kept saying FUCK really loud until everyone in the place was quiet and just starred at us. It was awesome.
