Ha! We went there last night. I'm always surprised at how not bad it is.

Early eighties collectors glasses.

I was such a sucker for that garbage.

" mom, dad, Can we go to steak&shake for those (Battlestar Galictica?) collector's glasses....... can we? can we? can we?"

I don't know how they were able to stand me.

Now kids want $300 gaming systems and iphones. Your parents had it easy.

I prefer winstead's

Carney, what should I try there?

I either haven't ordered the right thing or the one here in Dull-Ass just sucks.

My standard is the dbl steakburger with cheese, fries and sometimes I make it a platter and go for a cup of chili, too. It's not TX chili, but its pretty good. They have a good pattymelt, too. My wife likes the orange freezes, they are like a dreamsicle milk shake.

There's something about the fried, thin patties and the shoestring style french fries. I suppose part of it is nostalgia, I grew up eating at S & S, so its a comfort thing.

All my native Texan friends here in Austin don't really dig it the way I do. It might be something you have to grow up with to appreciate. Part of the charm up north is the waitresses tend to be middle-aged to elderly and call you Hon. The waitstaff here are usually teenage single moms with shit for brains.

I can't be the only one here that thinks Steak and Shake sucks.

Even the shakes ain't that good....

But I try it a couple times a year, mostly because of co-workers that just love that shit.

Burgers are thin, greasy and tasteless. Fries are OK.

IMNSHO, of course....

Went a few months ago and wasn't too keen on it either.

could it be that franchising has gotten in the way of making decent food?

Are there Winsteads outside of KC? Man, I NEVER eat there when I go home. I should! Tried a Five Guys in LS last time I was there. Pretty fucking good, too!!

Steak and Shake is also damn good. I could eat cheeseburgers every damn day.

Tried Five Guys in LS

Los Sweaters?
Posted: Dec 15, 2009 9:35 pm

I mean, I'm not suprised by you trying five guys, but didn't know there was such a place as Los Sweaters.
Posted: Dec 16, 2009 1:15 am

Hmmm, good to hear about 5 guys. Got one in the neighborhood now. Can't remember if the sign said open on the 11th or the 17th. Gotta check it tomorrow.

Current choices are Wendy's mini burgers for 99c, Wendy's blue cheese burger, fry, drink for $7 or BK or McD's crap or a couple bars with INSANELY PRICED $9.00 unimpressive 1/2 lb. burgers and fries.

I'd like to think LS = Los Suenos.

Sweet dreams, y'all.

5 guys rules.

No, I don't think so, I was refering to the ones in KC where I grew up. I spent most of my high schools years at the winsteads on metcalf, chain smoking and drinking bottomless cups of coffee.

Jon, I used to hang at the one on the Plaza when I was in HS. When I played the Black Out a few years ago, one of the kids with whom I used to drink coffee and smoke cigarettes was doing the sound. Small hamburger/punk world.

SSSS...don't buy a full order of fries....THAT'S where they'll gouge you. Burgers are bueno, though.

Robin, my balls and dick are cold. What is your moustache doing?

Ask your mom.

5 guys is killer. I was impressed.
Steak and Shake is not so good, at least at the one near my house.
When the one opened at wolfchase so many years ago, I was there once a week. Maybe I got burned out.

Today is the day for 5 Guys opening here! They were already there at 7:30 am, but not open 'til 11. Everyone was scrubbin' and buffin'!

Thx for the fries tip Tommy.

LS=Lee's Summit, my home town.

Not like Jack Tripper!
Now that guy's a little "light in the loafers" If you know what i mean.
I've been keeping an eye on that guy! (sniff)

Yeah, the winsteads/punk connection in KC used to be huge, I wonder if it still is?
Posted: Dec 22, 2009 9:36 am

5 guys is alright, but at $5.19 +tax for a cheeseburger, $2.89+tax for fries it ain't that great. Nice array of toppings. Fresh jalapenos, raw onion and A-1 for me, yumm!

Pause in Portland has better deals. Half lb. Oregon grown ground daily burger w/ Tillamook cheese and fries or salad for $8.
Posted: Dec 22, 2009 12:17 pm

I just looked up what it took to open a five guys franchise. It ain't for the po folk, thats for sure.
Posted: Dec 23, 2009 8:55 pm

Hmmm, good to hear about 5 guys.

I miss 5 Guys...a little. I liked the fries and the fact that the guy who owned the one we went to in Florida hired a bunch of recovering drug addicts who were truly INTO having a job. Or they did a good job of acting like it.

Steak & Shake aka "Stab & Shoot" in Miami. Can't recall the exact reason why other than there was a ridiculously murderous robbery at one there. I can never call it anything else now.

i ate at a s&s in cincinnati back a few months ago in october and our waitress was probably in her 50s and called us "hon". if the place allowed smoking, i'm sure she'd be smokin' a stogie and asking us what we wanted.

they have this 'wisconsin butter burger' there that i tried that night. i'm sure i got my entire caloric intake in one setting that night, but yanno, it was delicious. i used to hit the s&s up in bloomington, indiana all the time because it was one of the few things open 24 hours a day and we'd go there after the bars.

Hey, did you go to the one on Winchester and Mendenhall in the 80's? I still remember the Star Trek III glasses and Superman II. They used to promote the heck out of movies with those little glasses. If you got ice, you'd be done in 2 slurps. Plus the kids would break them before they even got home. Same at Popeye's, Taco bell, etc.. The 80's!

They're good. There is a chain up here - Culver's - that has based their place around a butter burger. I probably should try that the next time we are at S&S. I've been getting the western BBQ burger because is has some sort of mutated French's Onions on it
Posted: Jan 6, 2010 5:38 pm

Culver's is fucking tasty!!

The waitstaff here are usually teenage single moms with shit for brains.

Which means in fifteen years they'll be waiting tables at Waffle House. I like Steak & Shakes even though they were not apart of my upbringing. Solidly predictable road food in the Midwest for when you can't find a roadside Mom and Pop to play restaurant roulette.
