I think it's Jim Beam. I gambled and lost with a cheap-ass half gallon of Black Velvet.

Here's a good cheap whiskey. It's imported from Ireland. It would probably be cheaper than Beam, if the U.S. dollar wasn't devalued thanks to incompetent leadership.

Rebel Yell ain't too bad... it's crazy cheap. I forget how little. I haven't had it in a while but it's definitely under $10 for a fifth. between $7-$9 I think. You can get it @ Trader Joes if you have one in yer neck of the woods. On a similar note, If you looking for a good cheap potato vodka, Monopolowa is the best. it's $11 for a liter. I like it better than any of that expensive shit like belvedere or grey goose.

It's a little bit more rock gut than Jim Beam, but eons better than Black Velvet or Evan Williams... well maybe it's compareble to Evan Williams, it's been a while since I've had either, but it's cheaper than EW (6.99 last i checked)

I just finished a fifth of Jim Beam. I will definitely try some of the suggested alternatives though. I was all about Jack Daniels until I realized that Beam is just as good, and about $8 cheaper per fifth. The Black Velvet experience has made me very hesitant about cheap alternatives.

i was in a greenpoint bar with some friends a while ago and there was a FULL BOTTLE OF RYE on the shelf that not one shot had been poured out of...

we asked for a sample and just about finished the bottle.

i do not remember the brand or anything - but i was surprised that it didn't suck. i don't know why i thought it might suck - i guess because no one had ever ordered it?

Evan Williams 1783 (not regular EW, even though I don't mind it too much either) . . . 10 yrs old, and usually around $5-6 for a pint. It's better than Jack in my opinion.

Jack is too sweet, that must be why all the hair bands drank it.

That Old Charter 12 years was gooooood but at $30/bottle.

Rebel Yell has got to be the best cheapest, otherwise Beam. EW aged is good. Elijah Craig is good. Weller 12 years is good. Early Times gives me a headache. Kessler is rotgut, I think it's got grain alcohol in it.

I'll mention again that Zatar swears Beam makes him violent, so he does JD.

The good thing about "Bourbon" is that US laws pretty much insure it can't be too crappy....it's hard to make something cheaply and still call it "Bourbon"...

Remember when K&B had their own line of booze? My grandma use to buy that shit and pour it in crystal decanters with little brass labels. Classy!
Miss Strange
Member

My mom had some of those decanters. I think hers came with the booze already in \'em. I think she peeled off the labels, cuz the contents were alway alittle bit of a mystery. I remember as a kid sneaking the peppermint schnapps & creme de minth with my friends. We had some of the same booze for years & years.

If you're a hermaphrodite-Early Times

Transgender- Jim Beam

by far the best cheap whiskey is Old Crow. hands down. end of story.

benchmark ain't bad, we use it as our well at the restaurant.

did anybody ever tour the Beam distillery? they give you unlimited tasting at the end in the old house -- Baker's, Booker's, Beam Black, etc.

but you can't go nuts 'cause the only way to get there is in your car and that 110 proof shit is just too wicked

it's a FREE tour, BTW

Can't believe nobody mentioned Old Thompson yet--wait, yes I can, I just re-read the thread title. O.T. is only good for making Knife Juice, which is whiskey and grape soda--"I got some juice, who's got the knife?". When people round these parts want an upgrade from the most godawful brown swill money can buy, they go with Evan Williams. I'm not much of a whiskey drinker but I'll take Crown Royal if you got it. When in Milwaukee, whiskey fans should check out Nessun Dorma for a really well-stocked whiskey bar for the aficionado--the owner is way into the stuff.

Reading the comments left here.... Per what another said about Black Velvet... it may go down smooth as velvet, but 'black' is indeed a suitable word for the aftertaste. "Charred Velvet" anybody? - Evan Williams is the best I've found, a step above Ancient Age to me, (AA being about a dollar cheaper per 'pint'), and easily better than Henry McKenna. But as for the _really_ cheap stuff... Old Crow? Heaven Hill? Mattingly & Moore? -- Canadian Mist wasn't bad, Seagram’s 7 better, but I've about decided 'blended whiskeys' aren't the real thing, more like flavored Vodka or something.

I don't know. I watched that movie about the Irishman who drops dead after winning the lottery and the whole town tries to keep it quiet so they can share the money. They all had a bottle of Powers at home but when they wanted to butter someone up, they broke out the Paddy's.

Everyone knows, if you see it in a movie, it has to be true.
