Evan Tyson was found dead at approximately 4 o'clock this morning in his bed. As of right now it appears to be an accidental drug overdose. I'll post any more relevant details if I receive them.
If you were at Gonerfest II, you probably met or saw Evan. He was the wild man covered in tattoos, and had the GONER tattoo on his gut, and the Rock N Roll tattoo on his throat. He appears a bunch of times on the GFEST2 DVD trailer, including at the very end with me...we took the bus to Gonerfest together from Milwaukee.
I'm really bad at this kind of stuff, and I'm kind of drunk right now. I only knew Evan for a little over a year, but we became pretty good friends, and even had a band together that played one show. We sort of lost touch a few of months ago, but I still ran into him quite a bit and talked to him online every now and then. Evan was one of the craziest & funniest people I've ever met in my life. He will be missed by MANY people in Milwaukee, and I'm sure a lot of people in many other cities. Evan was one of those people you would meet once and never forget. In the words of Hunter S Thompson he was "One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die."
R.I.P.

Holy Shit! I'm real sorry, man. He was great, just for that short time that I got to know him. Sad, man. So young, too.

No point, just wanted to see if it was the guy I met. I think it was a different guy.
Sorry about your loss.

Just listened to a bunch of his songs with people who kinda, sorta hated him, or at least felt he was a dick, and, it was pretty brutal for all. Desperately self-destructive lyrics. These things happen. We're burdened and blinded by life, but death is just as meaningless... especially when it's simply forgotten in due process like that memory that you've already blacked out.
All I can think of is how it could have been any of "us" and how glad I'm out of all "that." Too bad we all can't escape it. Between AIDS, overdose and Hep C things are looking rough for those of us who just felt like we were being adventurous or somethin'

Was this the guy who used to run the "Real Rock N Roll" mailing list? If so I think he lived in Florida for a while.

that's very sad. evan was a guy i'd hear from lots and then he'd drop out of sight. i knew he was battling those drug issues, and i'm sorry the drugs won.
RIP evan

i cannot remember all the details about that fight (for Gonerfest took most of my brain cells for that week) but i do remember that it involved Evan taking up for someone else. i feel like it may have been a girl who the dude was fucking with???? forgive me for my shitty memory. maybe someone else can help me. point is: he was defending someone else.

Alot of people around Milwaukee thought he was a real asshole. His group of friends are kind of known for being obnoxious pricks, but honestly, in my experience with them it's usually my friends who seem to be instigating the stuff. I believe they start the shit because they dress "punk."

He was my accomplice in dumping the kegbucket of icewater on Clint's head at Twitch House. Guess I'll have to keep that memorial alive by myself every year now.

I don't wanna steer away from the threads orignal purpose, but I just wanna say yer wrong about those "punk" kids. From my experiences (and I actually live here), they only go to shows/parties to start fights and cause really annoying drama. They're bored fashion-victim rich kids who've obviously got nothin' better to do but fuck with people.

I know some of those people pretty well. I used to live with Wattie, and he is beyond nice and kind. Everytime I've heard about fights with these guys usually my friends end up saying something like "well, I guess I was fucking with them repeatedly until they punched me" and I know for a fact that one of my friends yells "up the punx" mockingly at them any time he sees them. I've hung out with these guys on several occasions, and I was actually going to start a fight with them when I heard one of them punched Jim, but when I confronted them about it, they all were very nice and seemed to kind of have the attitude of "well, we don't like to be fucked with" and hell, I've had the same attitude at times.
Who knows though. I just tend to think these things go both ways alot more than people would like to admit. My friends and I used to be huge pricks in GB, but, I never instigated shit ever. I just responded to people's treating us in a way that I felt was unfair.

I'll tell you, I know it can really piss a person off when you're ostracized for being "punk" at a punk show. I know all those HFK kids used to get shit alot for being into hardcore in Green Bay. When you're treated like you're not "cool" because you hate gay shit like Screeching Weasel and like shit like Black Flag when you're at a punk show, well, it could lead you punching people in the face too possibly.

I don't think he jacked Wattie's name. I think everyone called him that because he was an old haggard guy with a mohawk.

shit. i finally saw this thread.
evan ran security for the "no drinking outside the store" rule after the cops wanted to bust us at gonerfest II. evan's all over the trailer. That's him saying "I'd do it all over again" at the end. he had a great goner tattoo. we only got to see a few sides of his obnoxiousness, and my girlfriend wanted to kill him, but he was fantastic that weekend.
dammit.

Like I said, I am talkin' from just my experiences. And it was always them starting shit outta' nowhere. I don't doubt it, but I have never seen anyone give them shit for looking punk. Fuck, I look like pretty stupid lots of the time myself, I don't care who dresses how. These kids tried fighting friends of mine 'cuz they thought they were gay, slashed tires at shows... Their "leader" (or what fuckin' seemed like it) came up to me, stared me down and said "You look cool.. Why don't you hang out with us??" one of the first times I ran into those guys. Other times I have seen the same dude lecture his friends for not acting punk enough. Regardless of who instigated what, those guys are fuckin' morons.

He hurled some beer bottles into a homeless camp next to the Armory, it pissed a lot of people off, but in hindsight it was pretty funny. RIP aggro beer gutted dude.

Evan is my oldest son, he died in his sleep, no sight of anything wrong, he had just fallen for Ana and were turning their lives around.
He died here and was with his friends and mine that night, drinking vodka and nothing else. Sure something could have been in his system, Evan never lied, we had a very open love & trust relationship with each other as his did with everyone.
Yes he was an asshole, because he could, mean no, stick up for a freind or point yes.
But Evan is simply a brillant wonderful artist
now our angel.

Hey, John. I didn't know your boy but for about 20 minutes on the last day of Gonerfest II. We stood outside Goner smoking cigarettes and telling jokes back and forth. Even in short moments like that in life, you're glad to know them, just because who's got time for b.s., right?
I'm a dad, too, and I can't fathom losing a son.
Anyway, sorry for your loss, and thanks for making somebody to entertain me for a little while. Of all I've ever known of him, he was a good guy.

john, i hung out with evan and mike the whole time they were in memphis for gonerfest last year. crazy as hell, yes, but evan was very sweet to me then as well as for the past year, keeping in touch and all. i know how loss feels when it comes to immediate family and though there is nothing anyone can say to make the pain go away, know that he touched lives even if it was for only a short while. in the case of memphis, that while was too short. you and your family are in my prayers.
