yeah man, I used to be all about the Cupboard, especially in the old location before it moved into that converted Shoney's (?) and got all high volume. While I've never come across any health hazards on par with glass, there has been a serious drop in quality.

SERIOUS drop in quality.

the downtown cupboard isn't as bad. don't know if they serve glass, though.

the one downtown closed recently. Pretty strange since it always seemed pretty busy during weekday lunch (the only time it was open). Maybe having the Blue Plate open up a couple of blocks over hurt them?

ugh. i eat there once in a blue moon with my dad. looks like i might have to not go in there anymore, not that it was that wonderful anymore to begin with. ugh. they overcook their squash anyway and their mashed potatoes are kind of blah and their gravy is pretty blah as well.

When we had all our relations over for our wedding, even going out for lunch was an Arnhem-type operation, so we took 'em to the Cupboard, and the grub was OK, and to get folks eating greens & cornbread not 12 hours after landing in town, tickled me & Nadia a lot ... Our relations really liked the place, I thought it was OK ...

The Cupboard was always one of those places I entered with reluctance and trepidation, like Brother Junipers. I never understood why people smacked their lips at the thought of dining at these rattraps with crap eats.

But we have had this conversation ad naseum...remember the huge Barksdale Cafe debate of 2003?

I like The Barksdale! Oh, ohhhh ... Look, if you had to live and eat in the UK (and I live in London, even), you would not turn yer noses up at the Cupboard (free building material in yer food or not), Barksdale, or even Krystals ...

I like The Barksdale!

Fuck the Barksdale. It's so damn smoky in there I can't stand it anymore. And their food is mediocre at best. I like Bryant's for breakfast!

And I keep on sayin', King's on Jackson at Evergreen! (but mind the sweet potatoes--too much nutmeg) Oh, and they're about to start dishing out some African food too!

cupboard does suck now for sure! but they probably put that glass in the meat loaf on purpose VR. they're in cahoots with the flyer and now they've gone past screwing up your ads, and gone straight to trying to kill you. look out, their agents are everywhere. the flyer has struck again this week saying that "Jonathan Richmond" is coming later this month instead of Jonathan Richman! Hundreds of pissed off cameramen are going to show up hoping to get some pointers from this guy URL and hear about those tracking shots from Children of Men.

The afternoon after Springsteen played the first of two shows in the Coliseum in December, 1984, he went into Rare Records for awhile and then next door to the Cupboard, where he went in, sat down and had the fried chicken. For some time afterward, folks would come in to touch the chair he sat in.

There's a little more to that Springsteen story. He did not have the money to pay for the meal and the waitresses didn't believe he was anyone famous. Finally a customer paid for him.

Oh yeah, that was it.
I was so pissed when I found out about that (and remember it all these years later) because I was going to go to the Cupboard that very day, and at that very time but something came up. I wasn't living on Willett then, but wherever I was the neighbors sure would have heard some max volume Born to Run that night if I had been there!

I do love that eggplant casserole at the Cupboard. I have the recipe now, though, so I can make it anytime I want.

TK, Mike H. and I went to eat there at GFEST 3. It wasn't THAT bad.

don't know fire island, but i know that McEnroe sweater is silly looking, and so am i to boot. i do like how this thread about how the cupboard tried to kill you with glass has become about you trying to make fun of me about things i already know are uncool. Twee? Making fun of my outfits? Top shelf humor done with your usual aplomb.

No worries Alisa. But I am already half-way through eating one of the four packs in my new box of Saltines.
Alisa
Member

Okay, here you go...

4 eggplants (peeled and quartered)
1 medium diced onion
2 stalks sliced celery
4 cups crushed saltine crackers
1/2 lb American cheese (though I would never knowingly use American cheese in any recipe - substitute cheddar)
butter, salt, pepper

Boil eggplant, onion and celery together for 20 minutes. Drain. Mix thoroughly. Add 2 cups crushed crackers, 1/2 lb. cheese, and salt and pepper to taste. Layer 2 more cups of crackers on top of mixture. Spoon enough melted margarine to cover top. Bake at 350 until bubbly. Cover top if it starts to brown too much.

I think this makes a ton of that stuff, and the recipe can probably be halved. Still, I could eat that stuff til I puke so maybe the quantities are about right!
BHa

Thanks Alisa! I tried out a halved version of the recipe and my friends ate it up big time! I only got a taste but it was a delicious one. I'll have to make it again for myself.
