Oh my god. They're doing it now. I hate those things, they drive me crazy. That droning over and over and over in my head.
I always forget about them over the winter, then they start up and my head buzzes for five months.

Locusts?

There is some sort of bug down here that does this constant electric feedback sounding hum; is it like that?

Yeah, well, they're not the locusts, which are really the worst. These are the quieter hum bugs, which are just a constant buzz and don't vary in pitch like the locusts do.
Nost really as maddening, but like water torture nonetheless.

I think we are talking about the same thing; they never stop here in this climate. It is already hovering in the low to mid 80's everyday lately.

From my experience, Cicadas always freak Memphis interlopers out.

I used a hammer and chisel today to break the ice around my garage door so I could fire The Princess up and think about how Winter will be over some day. And now I gotta worry about BUGS??!!!

I love cicadas too. Much better than the "Palmetto Bug" (aka Huge Roach)! The best thing though are the lizards, frogs and snakes all over. The frogs are already hanging out; talk about bug eyed!

I actually think the cicadas are very cool looking, and love it when you find those shedded skins on trees. But the noise....no.

Call me crazy, but I love the sound of bugs humming. It's white noise and very soothing...What I can't stand is the sound of birds chirping incessantly outside my window starting at 4am. I swear I wanted to kill those bastards this morning. And, don't get me started on those Amazonian roaches Southerners euphemistically call "water bugs". I shared an apartment with about 20 of them and now I've got a wicked case of PTSD, as a result. Just thinking about 'em makes my skin crawl.

Oh, and speaking of cicadas, don't let your dogs eat them. Apparently, they are poisonous, but dogs happen to love their flavor- kinda like the way they love the taste of anti-freeze. Bad news.

I'll second that. It's that one particular bird - the one that starts early and has a really distinctive call that I'd love to go out and shoot with a pellet gun. It's not around in the winter either. Now cicadas, I love them.

Now, dogs yipping in the morning for A STRAIGHT HOUR AND A HALF? That...I can avoid.

I just wish the weather up here would make up it\'s damn mind.
I keep being told by native Pittsburghers that I will never believe the humidity up here, how oppressive the summers are, etc. I want to take them on one of my drunken trips to NOLA in August and see how they like that shit.

Bring on the Cicadas!

My shithole at the Cherokee Arms had them. The cats I had then (Jackson and Lucy RIP) would treat them like mice. The cats I have now (Viva and Whiskey) continue to carry on that tradition.
