Just announced on ESPN2 -- the NIT bracket!

Ole Miss has landed the coveted #2 seed in their regional, and will face off against the mighty UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Wednesday night. (Sadly for the 43 Old Miss fans in Memphis, it's been demoted to ESPN-U, which isn't even broadcast on Memphis cable.)

Should the Rebels get past both the Gauchos and the winner of the Nebraska/Charlotte game, they could be on track to face UAB, in a matchup that should become an annual event -- the Goner Mempis Classic, to be hosted by Chico Harris (in an orange jumpsuit) and Pierre Niles.

This is weird. There's a brand new postseason tournament starting this year called the College Basketball Invitational, apparently for those teams who were on the NIT bubble, but didn't quite make it.

If that's not overkill enough, get this -- once they get down to the final two teams, instead of a championship game, they have a best-of-three championship series. The hell? Who's honestly gonna watch this thing?

Included in the 16 team field? Houston, UTEP, and Tulsa. And Cincinnati. Heh.

Yeah! There was this whole thing where the NIT was worried they'd lose all their teams to this tournament, but now they're relieved cos it didn't happen. It's been a controversial issue since the beginning of the season.
