I just got home from Willie Mitchell's memorial service to get this news confirmed to me. To everyone at Goner Records, to Jay's friends, family members and to his band members past and present, I am sorry for your loss and, really, the loss to Memphis music.

Words pretty much escape me. If there is anything I can do to be of service to his friends or immediate family, you know how to get in touch with me.

I will miss you fucker. I always believed.

Jay owned the 2000's....
Posted: Jan 14, 2010 1:00 am

fuckin owned the late 90s. reatards and persuaders were the only two late 90s bands.

ok, time for me to get his records then ; a shame to die so young ; RIP man ; I liked what I heard from the album released by goner ; and your comment about your band members when they left made me laugh a lot!

May he rest in peace..wow...wow....

I'm really heartbroken about this.

My sincerest condolences to all of Jay's close friends, family and loved ones for your loss.

The world will be a more boring place without Jay in it.

Condolences to family, friends, Goner, and Memphis. RIP.

I didn't know him very well, but spent some time with him over the past few years, and this news breaks my heart. He never anything but kind and respectful to me and went out of his way to help me out more than once, even though he didn't have to. I'll miss him, but my deepest and most sincere condolences go out to those who knew him better than I did. I'm thinking about all of you today.

He had the balls and ambition to go after what he wanted, which is more than most people can say for themselves. RIP, Jay.
Posted: Jan 14, 2010 10:31 am

I still can't believe it. What's garagepunk without Jay? From the moment I got to know garagepunk, Jay was always there somehow. It'll never be the same.
Posted: Jan 14, 2010 11:35 am

It's so sad.. He leaves a big damn empty hole..
Thanks for everything Jay!
Posted: Jan 14, 2010 11:35 am

This is all so weird. I didn't know him, met him casually a hand full of times, but I bought Teenage Hate when it came out and it blew my mind. We're the same age, and to think that someone who I've been involved with musically for over a decade is gone is bumming me out more than I expected.

RIP Jay, and love to everyone in Memphis who needs it.

Jay was always very nice to me. I will miss him.

take care everyone,

Just saw this....
I think that's just standard police procedure in an unexpected death.
Posted: Jan 14, 2010 3:53 pm

The link says they are looking for a suspect...
Posted: Jan 14, 2010 4:07 pm

Christ. I hope to hell that's not true. It's way bad enough as it is.

My condolences to Goner, and Jay's friends and family.
Posted: Jan 14, 2010 7:42 pm

That link has been removed from Fox's website. They went on a fishing expedition for some news without checking their facts.
Posted: Jan 14, 2010 8:41 pm

more likely it was sloppy reporting/poor editing. the cops open a homicide investigation and they likely assumed they were "looking for a suspect". it's not like they could report the cops opened a homicide investigation but are not looking for anyone.

This all still just doesn't feel real...or right.

Similar here.

To clarify, my first (and only) real interaction with "the legendary" Mr. Reatard was at the Gonerfest 6 Saturday day show. He grabbed my arm gently and sincerely apologized for "that fight last night." I told him he didn't fight me and he looked confused and said "I thought I broke your nose." "Nope, someone else."

I was a little confused and really intimidated, I'd talked to him at GF3 but I really didn't know shit about anything and he saw right through me and didn't care what I had to say. Not by any means an insult but certainly a part of his personality I quickly recognized. There would be no false endearments. What you see is what you get.

Before Jay could respond a man, almost my spitting image but 30 years my elder, emerged and walked by us, not giving us a passing glance. "Oh, that's the guy." beamed Reatard, looking over his shoulder, "Well... I'm glad it wasn't you." I've been fixating on that sentence more and more. Jay, I know from experience, is never insincere. And his playful expression told me, if in hindsight, more than I could grasp at the time. (Jay Reatard is genuinely happy that he didn't break my nose last night.)

Our sincere condolences to Jay's friends and family in Memphis and everywhere else... didn't really know him all that well, but I know alot of you guys did... he was always a decent guy to us... RIP.

lucas, i hope you read the board, i am glad i met you and thanks to you and your friend who drove down from chicago to be here for jay's memorial service. you were kind and respectful. both you and your friend, you're welcome back in memphis any time, man.

to everyone that came, i'm glad i saw so many of you today. i'm sorry to see you this way, but glad to see you nonetheless.

I'm so shocked and saddened by Jay's passing. I hadn't spoken to Jay in a while, but I have known him since he was 17 and was so proud to see his success. I never stopped being a fan of his music just because I wasn't talking to him.
I'll miss you Jay...and the fact that I never got the chance to punch you during a show, like I know that you always wanted!
Posted: Jan 18, 2010 5:07 pm

what is there to say that hasn't been said about Jay? I'm sad he's gone. I'd gotten into the Lost Sounds first, and then his solo stuff, and like always with me, I had to go backwards to find out about all his other projects.

Anywhoo, I wish I coulda been at his memorial service. Since the first time I met in Chicago way back when(one of the Horizontal Action shows, I think), up until the last time I got to see him play in Chicago(they cancelled Munich this last October) last summer, Jay was always awesome to me personally, and said the videos I'd shot the previous March in Munich were pretty rad for being shot on Sony camera. From that and hipping me to all those great bands from New Zealand, I'll always respect and admire him. REST IN PEACE, JAY!

just saw some photos on facebook. did the oblivians play on saturday?
Posted: Jan 19, 2010 3:46 am

yea they did.
Posted: Jan 19, 2010 1:59 pm

I wish people could have punched him and pissed on him before he was buried. I think he would have liked to have gone out that way. Maybe more folks will learn from him and start making more records and doing less coke and smack. RIP, Jay

winston smith, you're a fucking classless idiot. and clearly no life that you 'had' to get on here and say this.

i guess it was a matter of time before losers like you ended up showing your ignorance on the Goner Board.

No worries Sherry..the funeral was as sad and sincere as could have been..heartfelt speeches from Eric and Stephen and Jeffrey who hardly managed to stand for griefing so hard....
And Jay set beautifully and peacefull beneath his flying V..............................

i started a blog to post all of Jay's records that I've got. Just pictures of records with info lifted from grunnenrocks (thanks!) and some poorly written thoughts.

I feel with you, Louie. Didn't see Jay often but that doesn't really matter, I just can't stand not seeing him not at all anymore. last show he played in Holland he put me on the guestlist but after the show he immediately left backstage, he was rather moody, so I didn't have a chance to meet. Should have just went there too. It wouldn't have changed much tho, I just would might have a better last memory bout him.
Posted: Mar 4, 2010 3:14 pm

That was a really nice piece Eric wrote in the latest MRR about the funeral. I was reading it on the train to work and had to stop 'cos I didn't want to cry in front of all the AM commuters.

Met Jay just a few times, in the neighborhood. I met him too late, it was just a month or so before his passing. Big fan of his music, he was a writing guru.
Posted: Feb 7, 2011 5:43 pm

The only chance I ever got to see Jay was in San Francisco, but I couldn't convince my friends to go, so alas I missed out. Was a newer fan of Jay's at the time; sad news all the same.

Visited jay and isaac last weekend. It's pretty nice out there. Also set Mr. or Ms. Paris' fallen vase upright so that they wouldn't put out any nearby bad afterlife mojo.
