Two weeks after signing with Matador imprint True Panther Sounds, Goner faves the Magic Kids are officially on the road, along with Girls and the Smith Westerns. Dates below, including a Valentine’s Day show at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall with America’s sweethearts, Hunx & his Punx.
We caught up with Will McElroy a short time after the band pulled out of Midtown — just ahead of a mammoth ice storm — and onto I-40, headed west:
How many Magic Kids are on tour?
Just five — Katherine and Alice are still in school. We’re in Ben’s Dodge Ram van. Hopefully we sell more t-shirts at a faster rate than we acquire whatever things we pick up… it’s a pretty tight squeeze in here.
What can you tell us about your upcoming debut for True Panther Sounds?
We’re planning on trying to record it all in March. We’re still working out the details. We’ve been talking to Doug Easley about using his studio, and we’re talking to Shane Stoneback about working on it as an engineer. He’s worked on records by Britney Spears and *NSYNC and the last two Vampire Weekend albums.
Most of your fans know just a few Magic Kids songs. What can non-Memphis audiences expect to hear over the next three weeks?
Maybe some new facets to our sound… I don’t know if I can describe what that might be. The live set, as it is now, is a little more keyboard-centric since we can’t have the orchestra onstage with us. We’re trying to get the arrangements to sound as full as they can. We’ve got more songs for the tour that we haven’t played live yet. The newer songs seem harder to play than the other ones, but hopefully it won’t sound too convoluted to the audience. Probably most 10-year olds could play them better than us!
Europe and the U.K. are clamoring for the Magic Kids! Any plans to head over there?
No specific plans, but obviously I assume we’ll be there sometime in the next year. Definitely by the time the album comes out, if not sooner. We’re also playing SXSW this year — don’t know which shows yet, but we should know soon.
Expect more news from the Magic Kids — McElroy, Bennett Foster, Alex Gates, Ben Bauermeister and Michael Perry — soon!
