Eons before Jay Lindsey appeared in the pages of the New York Times, he dreamed of fronting his own Ramones/Oblivians-inspired group. He fulfilled that legacy in 1995, forming what the then-15 year old described as “an ass kickin’ two peice [sic] from Memphis TN. The members include the mentally challenged Jay Reatard (vocals guitar) and Manwich? (who is using an alias to protect his identity (he’s a big rock n roll star in another memphis punk rock ? band.)).”
Goner released “Get Real Stupid,” the Reatards‘ debut 7-inch, in 1998. Almost immediately, the Reatards morphed into a three-piece featuring bassist Steve Albundy and drummer Elvis Wong, who appear on the Reatards’ first full-length, Teenage Hate.
Who could’ve guessed that ten years later, Jay Reatard could lay claim to a lengthy discography which includes albums and 7-inches recorded with Lost Sounds, the legendary Bad Times, Destruction Unit, the Final Solutions and Angry Angles? Or that, as one of the most recent acts to sign to Matador Records, Jay would be the biggest thing to come out of Memphis since Justin Timberlake?
On Thursday, Sept. 24th at the Hi-Tone, Jay, Steve and Elvis will take us back to where it all began. Don’t miss it.
