At the time we’re writing this, much of the world has yet to hear “Hey Boy,” the Magic Kids‘ debut single, due for release on Goner on Sept. 8th. Even so, it’s already been deemed “song of the year” by the folks at Rough Trade, who are releasing “Hey Boy” in the U.K. And stateside, journalist Jason Gelt has been raving about the band, describing “Hey Boy” as “ethereal ’60s pop flair, underscored by bright-eyed and bushy-tailed lyrics and the amazing soaring choruses of the Magic Kids Orchestra.”
In other words, hype for the Magic Kids is already pretty big.
Those of you not in the know may recognize some of the “Kids” — including taller-than-tall Goner employee Bennett Foster — from the Barbaras, who dazzled the audience at Gonerfest V during the daytime show at Murphy’s. While the Barbaras’ long-awaited In the Red full-length appears to be stalled yet again, the Magic Kids have taken off like, well, magic, with their Beach Boys harmonies-meets-Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound, which includes violin, sax and organ.
During Gonerfest VI, you can decide for yourself just which ’60s pop group they sound like — the Magic Kids perform at the Hi-Tone on Saturday, Sept. 26.
Until then, go here to hear “Hey Boy.”
